From what i gathered from ilovebees an air raid siren was played, after that we get nothing. Also no civilians were found on Halo 2, yet we see SOME in Halo 3.....

So how did they all evacuate? or did they all just move to Australia or something since New mombassa was where they landed...

Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien.
Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.
tenn' Ambar-metta!

Probably Evac.

Plus Earth wasn't the last human held planet, in the book "The Fall of Reach" it is mentioned that the Covenant skiped several inner colonys to get to Reach. so there is plenty human populace yet.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Best answer: While most were probably evacuated or escaped, a fair amount were still in the city. They were slaughtered by the Covenant. However Bungie doesn't put their dead bodies in because they're distracting and there would be a lot of frame rate issues with all the bodies.

In Sadie's Story, the set of audio logs from ODST, it says a large number of civilians were evacuated via the city's Maglev system. Also, one of the stories in the Halo Graphic Novel that many more were evacuated via the bridge you cross in H2.

They died. In large numbers.

I would imagine that many of the citizens would have been able to get out of New Mombasa, but once the Covenant arrived in greater numbers (reinforcements behind Regret) and the covies started planetwide operations I imagine that it would be hard to get anyone off planet.

There were probably millions if not a billion casualties after the Flood arrived and the elites glassed half of Africa.

Fun Fact: The population of Earth after the events of Halo 3?

~ 300 million, give or take.

That was an exageration.

^ No, not really. We were somewhat endangered by the end.

Total human pop on Earth in March 2553 was around 200 million according to various sources (Halo 3 Bestiarium and the encyclopaedia). The Covenant invaded everywhere and their objective was probably to kill as many humans as possible. Remember that while Truth only had around 30 ships left during Halo 3, he wiped out the entire UNSC Fleet and all the orbital Mac cannons, so it's safe to assume that he had a lot more in the beginning and that they deployed their troops all over the world before being taken out.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

The Flood didn't make it very far.

Yes, but the Elites glassing took out half of a continent according to Lord Hood. This could have been a figure of speech, but they still glassed a reasonably large area, probably killing more humans than the Flood did.

Mass evac to another Inner colony that hasn't been discovered.

My guess is that the UNSC rallied them to fight for their homes. Even if they acted as meat shields, at least they would be doing something to defend Earth rather than wasting precious limited resources to evac them.

But there is no point in defending a planet if everyone is dead, it in itself is a waste of resources, especially a planet that has been previously stripped of resources itself and acts as a huge residential centre than anything else.
The civilians are what you are trying to defend in that situation.

Earth is a symbol, as long as it holds, people have hope. If you lose Earth, people lose hope and it is a huge blow to troop morale, plus all the communications and command hardware is on Earth. Civilians are expendable because there are still plenty on planets that the Covenant haven't glassed. Besides, pulling resources away from war efforts to try to evac civilians who probably won't make it out alive isn't a good idea.

Ah the joys of war, two generals with drastically different views on what the priorities are. :P

As I see it, Reach was that symbol, people had already lost hope. The focus imho would be to evac civilians and then engage in total war on the covenant forces without the threat of friendly fire.

Each to their own. :)

n.b. I know that is not what total war is, but it sounds cool in this context.

In my opinion, civilians who are given a crash course in weapons training would be a valuable asset during the Covenant invasion, because the bulk of the Covie ground forces are made up of grunts. One civilian armed with a pistol would be the equivalent of a grunt. When people's backs are against the war, they can do amazing things provided that they are given enough incentive.

I would move all the children in safe houses(read underground military bases) and then assign all the adults to front line duty. Parents who want to defend their children are pretty fearless and dangerous, and there would be a lot of them. 8 billion civilians armed with pistols or rifles is no small force.

That is so not true, grunts are stronger than marines and the plasma pistols would devastate a civilian.
