Responding to SilentHunter's post; yeah, it kinda bites that you're caught in the same situation as the worst of the bad-actors in New Mombasa. However, when you do get on you should notice a lot less spam and a lot fewer flames. (I hope.) Many of the problems in NM come from sheer volume of posts; when that returns to a more normal (and controlable) level, things should improve.

A side benefit of this post is to unmask Vella's post, which is caught by the index glitch. Another side effect of rampant NM posting, perhaps?

It's getting even more amazingly stultifying over there. I saw a thread where someone was being CONGRATULATED for their spamming! I rarely go in there anymore. I stick to....well everywhere else but there.

Banshee Barron, I didn't mean to make you think I was "just giving up." Please take a moment and reread my post on page one, if you will. My point was this:
They are happy in their misery.
Will this keep me from visiting NM?
Will it keep me from occasionally attempting to guide a new member away from wrong thinking? No.
I will tell you this--when November 8th comes, I won't be seen on bungie.net for a while.

Simply that.
I think I speak for some of the more story-interested members of the site when I say I don't want anyone spoiling the fun of the Halo 2 experience, whether it be my friend on the telephone, a multiplayer contestant on XBL November 9th, or a bungie.net forum member in New Mombasa (or elsewhere here) who "forgets" to add the simple, polite warning in his thread topic: Spoilers!
That's what I meant by my comment. I by no means am avoiding the forum until November. I still lurk (as I usually do) and occasionally add my two cents. I just follow the rules about spammers (and flamers, to boot) and keep my mouth shut, then PM the mods. Does that clear up my position on things?

-Edmund Burke.

So that's it then? You all are just going to give up? Quite frankly, I find that disappointing coming from the new Septagin generation. If you give up this eisily on a topic like this, then you will get nowhere. It's sad to think that way back in the day, the members of The Septagon did not ever give up trying to help the Bungie community. And now to see this. It seems unfortunately that times have changed, and almost all of those people that were of that great generation have either left or turned into mods. Guess what? You here have taken up the mantle, you are the next generation. So for god's sake live up to it, and stop whining about what you can't do, and start talking about what you can.

You misunderstand Banshee.

What I meant to imply was my belief that it is now next to impossible to magically turn New Mombasa into the interesting discussion-based forum I always assumed it could become.

My points are often ambiguous, but what do you expect from a dictator.

I remain more than willing to help the community. If another ILB like incident arises, I will be in New Mombasa on the front line, getting my hands dirty and flamed. For I feel this is now my duty. I am also willing to help out the newer members who need guidance.

If another catastrophe breaks out in NM like the.....ughhh....ILB topic extravaganza, then I will be up there with you, Stalin, one browser on HFCS, one in whatever topic I am reporting. And perhaps one on another topic that I am correcting people, answering questions, telling people to stop flaming, and the like.

Exactly. You're going to stop going there because you believe that nothing can be done. Is that not giving up? Basically just said a minute ago is that you're going to stop trying to fix New Mambasa because you think that it's hopeless.

Here, actually.
I now realise that New Mombasa is a lost cause. It is time to accept that, and move on. Its time to say goodbye to New Mombasa.

It is a shame really. There is SO much potential for interesting discussion. But, as long as I am a lone warrior, fighting against inevitable death (read as flaming) there is nothing I can do.

You think that nothing can be done when something can be done if we do not stop trying.

I remain more than willing to help the community. If another ILB like incident arises, I will be in New Mombasa on the front line, getting my hands dirty and flamed. For I feel this is now my duty. I am also willing to help out the newer members who need guidance.

Now this I do not understand. You said in your subject post that you are going to say goodbye to New Mambasa, and yet now you say that it's your duty to help if another large incident occurs. I would suppose that your reasoning is that you will help out when the forums get even worse than they currently are, correct? Is it not your duty to try to help the forums when they are as they are now as well?

And you do believe that the forums are indeed in a state of chaos right now, that I know-

Intelligent conversation just seemed so out of place. I feared massive amounts of flaming if I even ATTEMPTED to string a coherant sentence together. I rember a previous experience, where some little blighter posted 'You speak like a 60 year old rich guy'. Hmm. Maybe this is the reason.

So why stop going there and let the flaming continue- why do nothing and let things get worse? Why don’t you at the very least just try to stop what it is that you hate. I don’t understand why you don’t attempt to fix things just because you think it’s impossible, when anything can be done in time if you believe that you can do it.

Alas, it's fine with me if you don't wish to go there, I can understand why. I just found it awfully disappointing that many of you would just stop trying to do something for New Mambasa merely because the task is to difficult for you.

Well, I have made a few posts on NM. Posts go off into random off-topicness, flaming is rife, and there is a general aura of hatred. But right now, I am more willing than ever to help make NM a better place to post in. I look at my original post, and I realise that my pessimistic outlook is rather silly. It is just up to those who are willing to help out.

I am sure that if some of us went in there and did some of the things moderators don't have the time to do (Start interesting threads, calm down potential flame wars, stop random off topicness, keep repetitive threads down to a minimum) then New Mombasa will improve. We just have to set the table for the new guys. It will be our comments and thoughts they are feeding off-Lets give em a good meal.

Banshee, you were right. It is up to us Septagonians, new and old, to rise to the challenge of New Mombasa. Even YOU, Recon. If we all work together, keep in contact via the PM system, and put our crazily sane heads together, we can do this. So, lets get it on! Will post a thread about this....

GO TEAM!

I'm staying out of New Mombasa for the next week... I've been rather ill-tempered in my forays there lately, and I want to present a good example and not simply start billowing flame all over the place. (As I came very close to doing.

I'm with Anton on this one. Lately, I get more and more disgruntled with the kids and immature attitude in New Mombasa. I understand that they are teenagers, and that some of the emotion and social ediquette are not in place yet. But, I never remember my friends and I being that bad, even on the internet when I was ten years old.

For example, I'm guilty as charged for saying some mean-spirited ends in New Mombasa to try and get kids to be under control, but they are either:
A) So inept in understanding they do not understand
B) Really are mentally challenged.
C) Are so into the whole 'I have to rebel against 'the man' idea that they ignore anyone who is not like them (Kind of defeats the purpose does it not?)

Either way, I still try to visit and make positive comments once in a while but always find myself uniquely annoyed by them, and I am EXTREMELY mild-mannered for those who know me well (In some cases I've even been called emotionless :\ ). But alas, I do not know what to do anymore except -blam!- slap each and every one of them and their parents.

Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying this thread, but as I've been reading it I keep expecting to see someone say "Back in my day...". I just thought that was rather amusing.

And personally I don't really mind the spamming/flaming in New Mombasa. It's generally easy to ignore, and is often times entertaining. And, as has been said before, there really isn't anything new to talk about now. The forum seems to be simmering until something new happens. Was simmering the right word?

Well, New Mombasa is officially a lost cause. I will still look through it, but the spammers/flamers are basically being ignored by the mods now. This sucks.

Why Shishka? Why?!?!?!

Thank you BBaron. Truer words have hardly ever been spoken. We are the new Bungites, act like it people.

However, any discussion is better than no discussion, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so I am glad this thread is here.

* I also think that if we so-called "more mature" members posted at least one thing in New Mombasa everytime we logged on, it would help the forum become a more mature place. Maybe nothing that is being discussed really interests you, but if you took the time to help somewhere instead of complaining we might get somewhere. And no offense to anyone, I am a firm believer that we are truly a community and angry disputations have no place. We are all here for a common cause.

I think NM will be alot better when the game ships...at first it will be a ghost town because everyone will be playing Halo 2. But then there will be alot more to talk about. I've recently only seen a few good posts in there, and although I try to add a few it doesn't help....much. Remember Stalin the 31st....you are not alone. But still outnumbered by your foes.

Some of you guys are lazy; that's pathetic

You talk like spamming and flaming isn't common on the internet. It's everywhere you go. However, I've seen good forum members cure this problem, by being just that: good forum members

The problem isn't the amount of mods, or what we can do. The problem is that all the good people I used to know on the old Bungie.net don't care for this site anymore; you don't. And you're damn right it pains me

Banshee Barron - Gotta love him, but only once in a long while do I see him post in New Mombasa

Rip Saw - Equally a friend, but doesn't dare tread into New Mombasa, for reasons I don't know

Fastmatt - Remember him? Wow, I don't even KNOW where he went

Shatterstar - Same

JoeyBagaDonuts - Same

You see the pattern? The first drop-off came when the new hotness arrived. I knew the feeling. It's a feeling that you want all the new people to recognize that you've been here before the Newness, and you're the common folk around the site. It was at this point that some oldies began to dip out. It must of been an overwhelming feeling that you couldn't live up to, and thus decided that you won't be a regular on Bungie.net anymore, but now be known as a "veteran" that doesn't come around anymore

This needs to stop. Every, single, person that has come to Bungie.net from the OLD OLD school, up until the second I'm typing this, all share one very important thing in common: a love for Halo, and a love for Bungie. Through this, good can come, but it's up to the people that want to put effort into the cause to discover how well it can get. Forums all over the net have their problems; Xbox.com forums, could be the flame capital of the world wide web. Let's make our own reputation, shall we?

Let's put some serious effort into identifying ourselves through action, and not through submissions into the Bungie.net complain box. Get in there, spread good forum etiquette, and display how bonding and welcoming a website can become. Don't let simple things like spamming and flaming fatigue your ability to get up and improve things

Bungie is busting ass on making the best game ever; I suggest we bust ass on making the best gaming community ever

Hell yea?

I agree. Although I'm a new-ish member, I feel like I (and technically) have been here for ages (Although I never joined the forums here until June this year, I can tell you anything almost about these forums from I'd say September2002 on-wards. Thus the reason why I recognised who the Soul was etc).

I still post in New Mombasa all the time. It's gone off a bit as of late, but it'll be fine again soon. I'd say give it about 15 weeks tops and it should be grand.

I could do what you ask, Maka, I could make a major comeback in New Mambasa. But almost 100% of my attention must go towards that one forum because it is so damn massive. You can't make a dent there unless you are online almost 24/7. It will be tough, but I think that I can do it.

I'm going back.

Yes, I've seen you there a bunch today. I've been there for almost a week now just answering any questions I see, as dumb as they may be, and pointing people in the wrong direction if they post in the wrong forum or whatever. Plus I have no school until next week so it gives me something to do.

Well, well, well... I was wondering where many of you “warriors of intellect” were hiding. I must say that I didn’t expect to find some of you basking in the sun light of former glory. It bothers me that I even have to say this, but it’s not a lack of intelligent discussion that has all but crippled New Mombasa. In fact, it is a complete lack of imagination and leadership, both of which bring forth compelling ideas.

At this moment in time, yes, going to New Mombasa is much like watching a mass of blind sheep frolicking in a pit of fire and brimstone. Nonetheless, it doesn’t make the argument that one should give up on the forum, or those individuals within it. I can attest that many, if not most, of the individuals in New Mombasa not only want, but yearn for intelligent discussion. Proof of this can be shown in the usual long double and, in some cases, triple post threads I put up on a weekly bases. If one notices, these threads of mine don’t center around the ususal banter; yet, they always receive a warm welcome and quite a few replies. I’m not trying to brag, but quite the contrary. I’m merely showing that it’s possible to find individuals who are willing and interested in discussing things other than the usual leaked video, ilove****, or the complaint of the hour.

In closing, I only wish to point out that this thread’s topic is really no different from some of those it wishes to discredit. Yes, this thread may end up contributing, but it’s still just an old fashioned complaint in disguise. I realize that my comments will probably come off as a bashing of you guys, but they really come from an angle of understanding all the frustrations. I deal with these same frustrations on a continual bases; however, I believe that focusing on the problem and not a solution will only help to push the “blind sheep” of New Mombasa closer to the edge;-)

-Eagle 117

P.S.
One other thought. What reasons would the celestial bodies that surround Halo be designated as Threshold (doorway) and Basis (main foundation)? If you have an interesting take on this, then please feel free to PM me.
