Well, I didn't. But that may have something to do with the fact that its 5 in the morning (4 when I posted) :/

Hahahaha! Other countries!

Kidding kidding... And yeah, that earlier post was a joke, mainly referring to PoA lifting off of Reach and the In Amber Clad floating above New Mombasa.

Yep, Norway. But then I see!

That scene in H2 was pretty epic when the orbital defence stations were being destroyed

Maybe it's just my limited knowledge of astrophysics and magnetism, but I have a hard time understanding how ODPs get around Newton's third law of motion.

I would imagine the force required to propel a 3,000 ton slug up to 12,000 km/s is quite big. Yet the platforms never seem to hurtle in the other direction after every firing. Has this ever been explained?

I don't think it has explained. But I have reasonable belief to counter this hurtle in other direction (caused by massive recoil) would be counter-measures rockets fired to counter the recoil, thus making this ODP to stay in place. I can't imagine it that would require lot of energy to keep ODP in place while firing the SUPER-MACs.

Orbital Platform uses AI to aim their Super-MAC to enemy ships. They can move their main gun in only specific degrees such as up or down 30 and 90 degree, or whatever.

Manuvering thrusters too help aim the gun

This.

I dont even want to imagine how much fuel the platforms consume during an engagement.
not to mention that the thrusters have to counteract the absolutely massive recoil every time they fire.

The MAC round/station would have a momentum of 36,000,000,000,000 kg*m/s. If the station weighs 100,000,000 tons, then it will move backward at 360 m/s. With a 1 km barrel(just a guess), and assuming even acceleration, then the acceleration happens in .00017 seconds, producing over 220,000 Gs for the station. You'd clearly need some very powerful engines or some sort of technology that can reduce the recoil. Or both.

The other possibility is that maybe the MAC rounds don't actually weigh that much. The size of MAC rounds in Halo 2 don't seem big enough to mass 3000 tons, and I believe there may even be a weight listed on them.

This is what got me. I believe that ODP deployment began at Reach just a year or two after first contact with the Covenant. This implies that research and production began before humanity was even aware of the Covenant's existence, ruling out any possibility of implementing captured Covenant artificial-gravity technology (as has been speculated upon in regards to later human ship production). Thus, the next most-likely possibility is, as you suggest, very powerful counter-thrusters.

I don't remember the exact page number but Nylund does touch on the specific of MAC technology in FoR so these numbers, at least for ODP's should be accurate. Then again, game canon>book canon so you could be right.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Yes, I thought about that too. I recently replayed Halo 2 probably like a month ago, and I noticed in the Fire Control Center (Where the bomb is) you can see the MAC rounds being loaded.

They indeed seem too small to way that much. But then again, it is said they are super dense rounds, perhaps compensating for their small size.

The entire station is built around the MAC.

thats why they are connected to planet side generators which power everything on the mac cannon.

Yes, and they use some type of thrusters to move their MAC cannon to aim against those covenant war-ships. Although it takes LOT Of energy to prevent massive recoil caused by 5 second of continuously firing.

And for somebody said that's why its connected to land generators:

Possibility, since they managed to figure out how transfer energy from land generators to the ODPs via wireless or laser or satellite gathering energy from it then transferring it to ODP.

I divert your attention to the AS50 .50cal sniper rifle.
No, I don't play CoD, but this is one of my all time favorite rifles.

It uses an advanced recoil control system, or more accurately many solutions to create a system that can put 5 rounds down range in little over a second, accurately, and can be fired "with just a tee-shirt on".
Point is the user feels little recoil in relation to the 15,000 fpe that are being generated.

It's not too far-fetched to think that in 500 years, we have scaled up and enhanced our technology to cut the felt recoil of these stations by say 75%. Then the energy requirements don't seem too big any more.

Depends on what they use

diesel.
