During the start of Halo CE where the PoA comes out of slipspace over installation 04, There are also several Longsword-class Interceptor's escorting it. If we jump back to Reach and Halo 2 we see that while the PoA was escaping it never launched any Longswords from it's hangars.

So can you launch fighters while your in Slipspace?

Also what happened to them during the battle of Installation 04?
Where they simply destroyed when the covenant boarded the PoA?

It launched them as it came out of slipspace. Also I think they were destroyed trying to protect the ship over the installation. All the details are in the fall of reach and The flood, it's just been a while since i read them.

You can launch fighters, dropships etc. in slipspace. They'll drop off after leaving the ship's mass influence field. Blue Team used this in First Strike.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

You can drop fighters off in slip space.

I know in one novel UNSC made special slip-space ODST pods.

This is correct.

However, it is more likely that they launched after the PoA exited slipspace and detected the Covenant. And they were destroyed. UNSC singke ships don't last too long afainst Covenant.
