Regarging the BOBshees on NA and EX. You don't get a medal for them but THEY ARE TRACKED. While B.net doesn't differ "Covenant Pilot" from BOB's, it does track an EXTRA Covenant Pilot vs Banshee kill when you shoot a BOBshee down.

Thus, one can assume, the GAME tracks it differently. It doesn't have to record a Light Vehicle Pilot in order to know you killed a BOB. You just have to kill a BOB. Remember, Bungie is tricky like this. They're not going to give you a counter and a map telling you how to get that helmet.

They showed you the BOBshee on NA via a challenge. Do I need to slap you to make you see that it obviously still registers as a BOB somehow? HOW ELSE COULD THEY TRACK IT!? Oi...

Also, it would make more sense that you get the Chest Piece by killing all the BOBs on Normal/Heroic and the Helmet on Legendary. That's how they've done everything else. Why would it change now?

From the very pixelated picture on Pfhorpedia, it seems the Ranger Elites are similar in looks to the "Vacuum BOBs" from Durundal.

Man, there are so many coincidences to be drawn here, I applaud the OP and everyone else involved for making this idea somewhat of a reality.

I also think its no coincidence that Durundal is made available on XBL where the other Marathon games aren't. I'd like to think this is almost inviting us to do some research, visit the game, check out the original BOBs and make the comparison.

(I realised Marathon was only available on Mac and could be likely why Durundal was released on XBL as it was released on Win95 too, but the research thing still stands in my opinion).

OP, did you get through on Legendary yet?

The community ported Marathon and it's two sequels to Windows and Linux some time ago:

it may register like that, but it doesnt give you the medal!!! and btw, im on the side of there is NO CHEST PIECE OR HELMET! i agree with kira in every aspect of it. also, has anyone heard of vanity? the person who made that went through the entire disc, and everything, and there is no helmet or chest piece. period.

I'd forgotten about vanity.. you have a point, I'm being to lean towards the idea it doesn't unlock the helmet/any armor but instead unlocks something else, maybe as part of a massive community challenge?

Something Witty.

I still don't understand why the chest piece/helmet needs to be on the disc? If IWHBYD is Halo 3 was cracked because it was found on the disc, wouldn't you think Bungie would avoid making that same mistake?

Well basically the idea is this:

Every map in the game has the items that will be used on it (including all armor pieces) pre loaded into the level file. Even for things like the flaming head and the elite major armor. They are already on the disk, the thing you download to unlock them is just a key of sorts.
This is because if only certain people downloaded the armor, they would be the only people able to see it. Now the problem is that if a patch was released with the new armor, it would have to recode every level in the game, which is probably quite the challenge.

I generally meant that you fight with BOBs in Durndal, so it makes sense that that particular game is on XBLA where the other two games aren't. The original was only available upon original release on Mac, but Durundal was available on both Mac and Windows 95 - this is a reason we're given why only Durundal is available to buy on the 360. I'd like to think its more of a research opportunity.

How did your faring in Legendary/LASO go?

I heard Durandal was chosen because it was more advanced than the first, and it would be silly to port the last one first.

We're doing it tonight, haven't done it yet

has anyone tried to stay at the Sinoviet Center on New Alexandria when the buggers start to attack?

I found a BOB in a banshee on Exodus during a heroic co-op play through. I don't know if it was known before. I found it while battling over the bridge below where the two Covi turrets are (two focus rifle jackals). There is a film in my file share if you're interested. I hit it with 4 sniper rifle rounds, but it spontaneously exploded before I could get a fifth.

No but it's not a bad plan actually, good to see someone suggesting a good idea for once =P.

The hunt is in 1 and a half hours by the way.

  • 04.26.2011 10:29 AM PDT

Shwah

When is the hunt?

  • 04.26.2011 10:36 AM PDT

In four minutes, anyone who's coming get online ASAP

  • 04.26.2011 11:57 AM PDT

Seriously Oak, Ive been doing this -blam!- for 16 years, gimmie my Friggen starter Pokemon and dont call me till im the champion! ¬_¬

Not being on the disk could make sence, but what if theres an opening in the code for an extention

If(NewExists(StorageDevice) == True)
{
Return NewFile;
}
Else
{
Return null;
}

Im a very basic programmer but that makes sense right? No one will find a file that isnt on there but would they notice a simple extension that might not even be worded that obviously?

Is that java? XD I see what your getting at, I'm afraid I don't know enough about the inside of the disk to be able to say if that's possible, it sounds plausible to me.

Would technicly work if the structure of the files was differently.

If there was 1 data pool where the maps would go and take them, such as *note the 2 following graphs are just for examples, not the real thing*

-Reach
-----Campaign
----------each map has a file

-----Multiplayer
----------each map has a file

-----Common files
----------Armory
----------Elite skins
----------etc

, your idea would be possible.
But the way the game is constructed resembles more

-Reach
-----Campaign
----------Winter contingency
---------------Armory
---------------Skins
---------------etc

----------Sword base
---------------Armory
---------------Skins
---------------etc

----------Other maps

-----Multiplayer
----------Zealot
---------------Armory
---------------Skins
---------------etc

----------Sword base
---------------Armory
---------------Skins
---------------etc

----------Other maps

You get the concept.

Each map is then compressed.
From my basic programmer's point of view as well,
you make up a single loading structure.
You don't start making multiple loading system and start storing your data everywhere else.
You keep it clean, organized and in order.
Adding new loading systems and putting data elsewhere, in this case your putting data outside the map files assuming the game can even process it, adds the chance of errors, load failures and conflicts.

This is also assuming the game could even be able to read outside-mapfile data.

You mean sticking around with the buggers and killing them all? Yeah, I've done that. There is actually a limited amount of them.

  • 04.26.2011 12:39 PM PDT

Wait a sec.

What do you unlock by killing the Bobs?

What I mean is you unlock Armor for the different ones on different difficulties on Reach.

I don't know what armor I have unlocked from killing a Bob if that is true. I only have 30 Kills on them but almost on each board.
