Awesome isn’t just a word. Awesome is a way of life. Awesome is a way of war. Teamwork matters the most. Lone Wolves jeopardize the missions. Teamwork is key. Resistance is futile. The covenant fear us, not the other way around. We don’t fight for Earth. We don’t fight for Reach. We fight for the good of mankind because we are A.W.E.S.O.M.E. I just looked at the Marathon Vidmaster, and I dont think it's been mentioned, but it also says "never shoot where I could use grenades". Maybe this means you must ONLY shoot when you dont have nades.

Or maybe ONLY use nades. Maybe use nades to kill bobs?

Please don't hype for games...
They'll just fall short of your expectations and you'll complain for months.

That's what I said 5 pages ago.

I'll just repost what I said with that.

I just had an epiphany!

In new alexandria, in the hospital, the elites return! Even more so, all the elites that first assault you are rangers. Maybe the BOB is among them but is only there for a few seconds (like the LNoS BOB).

Another place I can think of is when you escort Buck. After you finish, Buck lands on a building sometimes and enters a room. The room is empty and if you go in, you get locked out. (Sucked so much, I did this while doing LASO) Maybe the BOB spawns in the room if you do the escort fast enough OR if you stay in the room for a certain period of time?

ok so i've killed like 164 BOBs ok and I just hate him and hes a fun thing to kill when bored and that is all...

its not ive been out of the map using that glitch severel times and you cant stand on the super carrier. a better idea is if you have 2 people make one get into the pelican and one fly the person flying jumps out and the pelican falls to the bottom and the map and hops out. seems like a good place to hide something.

****Regarding the "Marathon Challenge" and BOB hunt****
**Please Read ALL if interested in, new, or have questions about the BOB Hunt**
[Update #4 (05/04/2011)]

@The Game1415 - Great OP and keep up the hard work.

MARATHON VIDMASTER RULES:

1) Punch all switches
-All switches on NA and The Package (There is a way to finish the package after the tribute room switch; Iron must be off)
-Switches: NA: Club, Pelican, Phantom
Package: Tribute Room, Banshees
-You can finish the Package if you do not get in the banshees.
-You cannot finish level with "Reach Racer" switch.

*Perhaps you must also 'beat down' all switches?
*What if the data pads are switches? MY THEORY ON DATA PADS:
*I did research on them way back on page 15 or something. I tried to match words and numbers with letters and figure out a code or pattern for 2 to 3 hours but got nothing. I did find that DATA PAD 7 and 16 (NA Data Pads) contain a secret message saying "HALO REACH PLANET" which oddly enough is a website...(Confirmed that the website is responsible for this message) Anyway, My theory is you must play through the game on Heroic getting data pads 1-9 in order. Then, play through the game on legendary getting pads 10-19 in order. Completing this may not do anything, but maybe it is necessary is the pads are switches?

2) Never shoot where you can use grenades
-This could mean no shooting ever or kill all BOBs/BOBshees with only grenades.

*Is it possible to beat LNoS w/o shooting?
*There obviously are points where you have to kill enemies to spawn checkpoints to go further in the level. With 4 players, no shooting seems doable when you can beat down, nade, splatter and "despawn" enemies.

3) Admit the existence of no level except total carnage
-This is obviously play on Legendary, but could also be a number of things...

*It has been mentioned Total Carnage could refer to the Lone Wolf mission. I didn't like this idea at first, but it could be true; Admit existence of No LEVEL (Level=Lone Wolf) except Total CARNAGE (CARNAGE=Lone Wolf).
*Total Carnage could = LASO (IMO, I doubt this, because it would be seemingly impossible)
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/Iron (Like Halo 3)
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/Mythic (I don't like this idea much because why not add Thunderstorm to that?)
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/certain number of skulls activated, such as a combination of 7 skulls.
*MY RECENT THEORIES:
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/Mythic/Thunderstorm/Tough Luck/Tilt (Like the L.D. daily challenges)
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/L.D./Iron
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/L.D./IWBYD/Cowbell/Grunt Birthday (7 skulls)
*Total Carnage could = Legendary/Iron/All Silver Skulls (If we aren't shooting we don't need a cross-hair so Blind seems reasonable)

4) Never use Caps Lock as my 'run' key
-This could mean never sprint, but probably isn't relevant because the vidmaster doesn't say you can't sprint, just not all the time (run =/= sprint) >Thanks Duo Oratar
-At this point, it is safe to assume AA's can be used.

*Some people mentioned no AA can be used at all. (I liked this but i think it was confirmed jet pack must be used on Exodus?)
*Is it reasonable to attribute a computer key (Caps Lock) to the sprint button in Reach?

5) Never, ever leave a single BOB alive
-This speaks for itself, but...

*Kill all known BOBs and BOBshees (Probably True)
*Some theories suggest getting at least one seek and destroy medal per level, but we have to kill them all right?
*Perhaps never let a BOB get away?
*Maybe something can be done to spawn the BOBs in the BOBshee?
*BOBs could be related to Gold and Silver skulls (Not likely)

***BOB & BOBSHEE KEY POINTS: (Good for new people)

-Exodus and New Alexandria are the only missions without confirmed elite ground level BOBs.
-There is at least 3 confirmed BOBshees on Exodus (All fairly easy to destroy in co-op)
-There is at least one confirmed BOBshee on New Alexandria (Not sure if more than one?)
-BOBshees cannot be hijacked in any way known
-BOBshees always appear alone and are always boosting
-BOBshees always spawn in the same location after crossing a certain point or checkpoint in the level.
-BOBshees don't give you a seek and destroy medal, but they have a description different from a normal Banshee making them significant.
-Seek and destroy medals given for killing a BOB can only be seen on your carnage report on Bungie.net
-BOBs are usually gold rangers but can be white, zealot, etc. (As seen on Sword Base)
-Most BOBs spawn after killing a certain amount of enemies (Not particularly true the for Lone Wolf BOB)
-BOBs will show up more often on Heroic or Legendary (Confirm?)

6) Start at level 7 of 88 (No real significance here)
-Start at Exodus or New Alexandria (Depending if Noble Actual counts as a level; most likely it does, making NA the mission with highest focus).

**New Alexandria contains: 3 known Easter eggs, BOBshee(s), only one start point (i.e. Rally Point Alpha) and happens to be level 7.
_____________________________________________________________

**Some Things to Consider:

-Bungie may be waiting until 7/7/11 to 'flip the switch' allowing us to complete a vidmaster challenge.
-A 343i employee (BS Angel) commented on the helmet and said she could not reveal its secrets.
-Bungie's 'flip switch' may allow us to receive a seek and destroy medal on Exodus and NA.
-All major BOB hunts should be done with a team of four using theater mode to cap the run through for secrets.
-With all the hints and recent posts about Bungie referring to BOBs, it can't be denied that there IS something to be found/unlocked.
-People researching the data pads, keep up the good work

***We should not forget the confirmation by 343i that there is a secret(s) in the Defiant map pack which is when the helmet was first seen/advertised along with its release.
-Unearthed may contain secrets yet to be found..
-A new chest piece was confirmed in a photo.
-Although, I have no theories on how BOBs/Defiant/BOB Armor could all be related...

LEGEND
* = Theory, idea, problem, or contradiction
- = Fact or most likely true

***REGARDING BOB HUNT TEAM(S)***

PM Duo Oratar or I and add either of us if you want to be added to the hunt and/or put on another team of four. This hunt will be going on with a team of 4 or 2 teams of four in one party while going through campaign similar to the rules of the 'Marathon' challenge. We will need dedicated and experienced players who don't think legendary is "too hard" and who can play 2-4 hours at a time.
GT: WPooney, Duo Oratar

You can pass the level package with pressing the banshee switch.

Heres what you have to do:
Press the switch
Dont get the banshees
Proceed the level try not dying or it will take you way back in the level
Play four player so it wont that hard

  • 05.02.2011 10:00 PM PDT

I like how bob is a really boring name but then bungie turns it into a big deal =)

  • 05.02.2011 10:10 PM PDT

Well guys, there was nothing found today, but hopefully soon Bungie will talk a little bit about the helmet or the purpose of the BOBs.

Just keep testing theories and keep killing them, there may be a community challenge to kill a certain amount of BOBs. :D

Video games stopped even being remotely about skill after the SNES. Recharging health, checkpoints, unlimited lives.

I'll take you back to Battletoads and TMNT and you'll beg to return to the cushy cake walk that is modern gaming. Actually, let's not call it modern gaming, let's call it interactive cut-scenes that occasionally require you to shoot at enemies to provide the illusion that you are using skill to get further in the game.

I still think there's more Banshee BoB's in other levels than just Exodus and New Alexandria. On Tip of the Spear, at the start of the level there's a third banshee that flies in behind the other two before pulling a u-turn and disappearing. It catches my eye because it never stops boosting, never fires, only appears for the first 8 sec. of the level and is apparently immune to the EMP effect of the grenade launcher, unlike the other two.

If I have time I'll try to tomorrow. I just noticed it recently. As soon as the level starts, look to the left at the tree. The two banshees that swoop in will blow apart what's left of the warthog, and one of the tires flies up and hits the tree. Directly behind the spot the tire hits the tree is where the banshee flies in from. As soon as it enters easy firing range it turns around flies off before disappearing. Like I said, I can easily EMP and destroy the other two, but this one always flies off unfazed no matter how often I EMP it.

  • 05.02.2011 11:18 PM PDT

I thought there was a secret button on Condemned. It was in a hallway, and it was a tiny red button in the side of a wall where it was hardly noticeable.

  • 05.02.2011 11:19 PM PDT

"Everyone, fire at Will!"
"Why? What did Will ever do to you?"

I may have found something of interest.
While hunting for BOBs on Tip of the Spear, I decided to let my character sit idle for a while, so I could observe the BOB in theater mode. (The BOB in question here is the first BOB on TotS, the one who spawns on the cliff)

Here's what I found:
-At first, he just stands in place after he spawns, staring at the battlefield. He exhibits no motion at all.
-After a few minutes, the game automatically updates the mission objectives, instructing you to destroy the AA gun. About a minute after this happens, the BOB will suddenly turn and stare up into the sky, at the massive air battle.

Could this be some sort of clue, or am I reading into this too far? Have other people studied the behavior of "un-startled" BOBs? I have a feeling this might take us somewhere.

I made a 30 second clip showing this BOB's behavior. It's unrendered, though, but it can be found in my Fileshare. Linky
I was playing on Solo Normal with Catch, Cloud, Famine, Thunderstorm, Cowbell, GBP, and IWHBYD on.

I like the idea of mass sending a letter to a selected Bungie Employee asking for some kind of hint or answers so this isn't wasted time, as much as I enjoy hunting for BOBs.

If we send 300+ then we might get some answers.

he said mass send? hmmm. Well I am unsure of mass sending. I mean I can understand that then maybe said employee could see our dedication and stuff, but at the same time they could also just see it as annoying and be like, "Leave me alone! :("

We definitely shouldn't send a mass mail. That would make them unhappy. I just think I should send the message I wrote on behalf of all of us. See how that goes and then we can go from there. What do you guys think, should I send it?

Change the letter so it asks directly if it is possible at this current time for the helmet to be obtained. Do NOT ask how to get it, also don't just ask about a "big secret" because they won't know what we are on about.

WPooney, could you change that thing your posting to contain less "Never use caps lock as your run key" because Run =/= Sprint, that command is too marathon specific to have much to do with Reach. Also the start at 7 of 88 thing is just what it says in that image. As I said previously the vidmaster was done on a per level basis across all the games for ALL of the levels, not skipping the first six.

Mess with the best, die like the rest!

I'm thinking, is there any popular website out there like HaloCharts which can track Seek and Destroy medals earned by players on individual campaign missions? Then we could tell if anyone had been rewarded one somehow on Exodus or New Alexandria. Let's face it, of all the people who play Reach, not all of them are going to visit this thread/these forums if they did manage to kill a BoB on these missions (or perhaps they didn't even realize they had killed one).

Also on the sniper mission there are banshees constantly flying over head in the last section. If you kill all the enemies and back track to the ledge right before the spot where the data pad is at on legendary, there will be a banshee that swings "way" off course. I haven't been able to destroy it(I got it to catch on fire) but it is constantly boosting.

EDIT: it shows up every three-four minutes I think.
