Subject: The "BOB" Helmet Theories Thread (Seek and Destroy the BOBs)

I would like to bring up a theory. Somewhere in this topic there was talk about finding the datapads in a certain order. What if the order of the data pads from beginning to end of the campaign would be some kind of code, like jumping through different halo rings to get the skull. After writing down the number of the datapads (In the order of finding them as you play along in campaign), what would it be used for? And you know that vidmaster challenge from Marathon? "I will punch all switches..." -press the datapads/ secret buttons in a certain order?

Does anyone understand what I'm saying?

You say the act of killing BOBs won't actually unlock, reveal, or effect anything. I'm curious, why do you think this? What do you think of the "Search and Destroy" Medals, or the mysterious description of the BOB on Bnet (Wipe them out...)?

I don't mean to advertise but I've coincidentally made a thread asking the community for help with the sole purpose of achieving 7,777,777 BOB kills, just like the 7,777,777 grunt and brute kills challenges we had in Halo 3. Link.

I'm thinking, is there any popular website out there like HaloCharts which can track Seek and Destroy medals earned by players on individual campaign missions? Then we could tell if anyone had been rewarded one somehow on Exodus or New Alexandria. Let's face it, of all the people who play Reach, not all of them are going to visit this thread/these forums if they did manage to kill a BoB on these missions (or perhaps they didn't even realize they had killed one).

You can check it on B.net, go into medals, then select campaign then at the top there is a drop down, that says filter by map, and select the mission you want to see your medals for.

Sorry, what I meant was, is there a popular website which has the leaderboards for Seek and Destroy medals like this, but has the function to be filtered by mission? Searching a player on Bungie.net is okay and all to check out a specific person's medals, but having a mission filtered leaderboard would allow us to easily check and see if anyone out of the large number of Reach players has somehow been awarded it on Exodus or NA.

after many thoughts and theories, Im putting my money on it being for 343 employees only, just like the blue flames for bungie. And I bet the 343 employees arent using it until they fully take over Reach in a few months.

this is one of the many theories I have!

ok bare with me long one!

Kira I agree with you on I do the BoB hunt for fun not really expecting anything!
Hoping it leads me to somethin maybe the helmet!!
ill consider that theroy number 1!

2. i believe there will be multiple achievements that will be all added together kind of like the vidsmasters from previous!
heres my ideas for some of them
a. find all the datapads
b. finsih the campaign on laso (the challenge laso no blind)
c. kill a bob on every level(possibly in every difficulty)
d. find certain eastereggs aka button pushing
e. matchmaking achievement of great difficulty
f. fire fight achievement! prob a certain number of killing something
soo like recon

well those are the ideas for that!
(sorry my percocets are kicking in now)

3 bob helmet is bungie is 343i equivalent of blue flames!! so will not be for us.

4 it coudl be from the dev kit but i highly doubt this one due to the massive amount of publicity, defiant map pack IGN and even on the xbox dashboard! once i seen it there i knew it was in the game.

With that said and done I believe that whatever is required to unlock this helmet hasnt been made accessible as of yet! they are waiting for 343i to take over! These guys are going to do whatever it is to keep the halo fanbase as high as possible! they sens there is alot of ppl leaving as of recently and are listening to the major demands and trying to prove bungie wrong or to lazy. my proof is in the unearthed firefight map! bungie said firefight maps couldnt be made for DLC and 343i had it done! however i dont care for that huge ass map but its there none the less. So when bungie said armor couldnt be done 343i thought "what can we do or have to be done to get this to happen" they want your business and will do whats necessary to keep it!

sorry for ranting and any horrific grammar or spelling problems!! im alil high off my meds from my foot surgery (best part is alot of down time to play some reach)

I'm not gonna read 60 pages, but as for Exodus, I know of 3 spawn points of the Bob-banshee, is there a 4th?
And, the first spawn point I know of is starting your ascent up the stairs where the Hammer wielding Cheiftan appears, the Bob flies right over the walkway....I'm wondering if he can be Plasma Pulsed and highjacked?

I may have found something of interest.
While hunting for BOBs on Tip of the Spear, I decided to let my character sit idle for a while, so I could observe the BOB in theater mode. (The BOB in question here is the first BOB on TotS, the one who spawns on the cliff)

Here's what I found:
-At first, he just stands in place after he spawns, staring at the battlefield. He exhibits no motion at all.
-After a few minutes, the game automatically updates the mission objectives, instructing you to destroy the AA gun. About a minute after this happens, the BOB will suddenly turn and stare up into the sky, at the massive air battle.

Could this be some sort of clue, or am I reading into this too far? Have other people studied the behavior of "un-startled" BOBs? I have a feeling this might take us somewhere.

I made a 30 second clip showing this BOB's behavior. It's unrendered, though, but it can be found in my Fileshare. Linky
I was playing on Solo Normal with Catch, Cloud, Famine, Thunderstorm, Cowbell, GBP, and IWHBYD on.

I posted this kind of late, and it was generally ignored. I'm just going to post it one more time during busy forum hours to see if this is that big of a discovery or not.

Interesting find, I have seen a video of a guy examining what the BOB is doing on winter contingency in theater. He spawns looking at a little transmitter box on the wall, then at a certain point, turns around and starts running which is when most people see him while driving the truck.

You know, I was on HaloCharts yesterday trying to work out if you could do that! If some website had the feature we could discover if anyone has ever killed a BoB on NA/Exodus. Someone could easily have killed one and not realised what it was or how important it was. I find it a little hard to believe that there if there is a BoB nobody has ever run into it, ever.

If you look at the halocharts leaderboards for seek and destroy here, the top four players have more than one seek and destroy medal per game on average. How is that possible if "BOB" only appears once per level?

Subject: The "BOB" Helmet Theories Thread (Seek and Destroy the BOBs)

###SOME THEORIES/IDEAS/QUESTIONS THAT NEED CRACKING###

1) Can anyone confirm the amount of BOBshees on NA? I know Exodus has at least 3.

2) Confirmation of BOBshees on other levels?

3) Play through campaign getting data pads 1-9 on heroic, following completion, play through legendary getting 10-19. (Might as well punch them, due to recent speculation that they could be switches.)

4) Can the pelican on Exodus be hijacked somehow? (I have a theory on how this could be possible) (Not really relevant, but I did find a way to board a phantom turret while the covie turrets are getting dropped off on the landing pad).

5) I heard directly from someone that they were playing Exodus on heroic solo and destroyed every known banshee throughout the map up until you get to the wraiths while in the hornet. He said the hornet flew down and hovered above the wraiths for a while allowing you to shoot. He thinks it may have been a glitch...I say, perhaps troll? Worth checking anyways.

6) Complete a marathon vidmaster run through with a team of four, killing bobs and obeying the oath (BOB Hunt Team's Next Assignment) (There is so much speculation on what the oath could actually mean, it really will be tough to get this debunked 100%)

7) Has anyone tried playing Exodus/NA heroic or legendary in online co-op mode and perhaps looking around/destroying the BOBshees there? It may be worth trying to look for something different.

8) Can LNoS be completed w/o shooting?

*Here are recent theories I came up with after speculating that we are still missing something in the defiant map pack...

1) Perhaps there is a way to spawn a BOB in firefight?
-The most obvious map to choose would be unearthed as it is in the defiant mp.
-Perhaps play with a team of four while having 2 on the covenant team and 2 as Spartans. Elites might as well change their models to rangers.
-Maybe play solo as a ranger elite...look for secrets?

2) Maybe it has something to do with the Endure vidmaster? (Which was referenced in a weekly challenge recently)
*Examples of things to try:
-Play with a team of four on unearthed on legendary or heroic and get passed set 4?
-Put all skulls on while on legendary with a team of four. Make waves unlimited and spawn from ground. Make all waves be 'ranger' elites. You will obviously need to have upgrades such as invulnerability on to survive for very long, but play through that for a while looking for a BOB or a secret? Perhaps complete 77 waves? Or 7 sets?

3) If there is anything to be found, I doubt it's as easy as making yourself invincible and killing elites.
*If someone wants to test this Unearthed theory; for starters, I recommend settings be set something like:

~ 4-player custom firefight game on Unearthed.
~ All waves of Ranger Elites
~ Unlimited waves
~ Heroic or Legendary
~ Skull(s)?
~ Survive as long as possible
~ Check theater mode

These theories are quite unorthodox, but hey at this point who cares?
I know there are more theories, I'm just too tired to think right now. Feel free to add, confirm, or deny.

NA's bob/bobshee as opposed to other levels bobs.
every level of the campaign has a start a rally point A & B where as NA just has a start! almost all levels have 2 bob spawn points normally tend to be around the rally points a & B hence NA only has one BOBshee. this is my theory and im sticking with it til another bob/bobshee is exposed on NA

lol Well, if people are honestly thinking The Marathon Vidmaster challange is somehow linked to Reach lets run through this.

While there is no definitive (ex cathedra) list of Vidmaster rules the following have been compiled from Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal, and Marathon Infinity. Memorize them.

Rule #1 Command-Option Begin New Game

Choose a level and start out with only one pistol, 3 rounds of ammo, and 1X shields. The rest is up to you. The objective? To complete the level. The Marathon Vidmasters' Page would add to this - complete the level as stylishly as possible. Too many Vidmasters not enough Style. Just Vid It - With Style!

-Choose a level, use the pistol only

Rule #2 Total Carnage Difficulty Level

Is it necessary to mention this? Well you'll find some films out there claiming to be on Total Carnage but there not. Don't be fooled by Spazeroids.

-Legendary Difficulty
Rule #3 Punch All Switches.

A new rule introduced with Marathon 2. You can be forgiven in Marathon for not doing this but not in Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity.

-All Datapads or hidden switches

Rule #4 Never Shoot Where You Can Use Grenades!

Another of those new rules introduced with Marathon 2. Who needs grenades? On some levels you do if you want to activate switches, grenade jump, or climb walls so don't waste them. It's a silly rule. Rules were meant to be broken. Use your discretion. My wha...?! Of course you should never ever need to use the primary trigger on the Assault Rifle anyway. ;-)

-No AR or other guns, pistol and melee only. Use grenades for grenade jumps only, not for killing.

Rule #5 Never Use The Caps Lock As A 'Run' Key.

Ha! Who would do such a thing? Spazeroids for one!

-Possibly no AA or, another way of saying, " On Legendary, noob"

Rule #6 Never, Ever, Leave A Single Bob Alive.

Cruel but true. A Marathon 2 and Infinity rule. Then again Bob can now fight back! On some Marathon levels saving Bobs is a necessity. Again rules were meant to be broken. Use your discretion. Least you forget "It is your sworn duty as a security officer to protect Bob." (Marathon Manual page 15).

-Kill all possible Bobs on map.

Rule #7 Just Vid It - With Style!

-Save video. Submit.

Jason Jones is the only Bungie employee who's name is on the vidmaster page for Marathon, he proposed the challange as well.

Register at your local Vault Tec office today! The world might not be there tomorrow...

I really don't understand some of you. Bungie has already confirmed that the BOBshees are BOBs. So you don't get a medal, who cares? The game still tracks the kill as a BOB obviously or the daily/weekly challenges could not be completed by killing them. Stop wasting your time on NA and Exodus!

I could understand if all of the BOBs have been found and killed on Legendary. However, NOBODY has killed the BOB on Lone Wolf (Legendary)! Maybe I am thinking too rationally here... but I would be spending my time figuring out a way to take that one out just to debunk the "kill all BOBs on Legendary" theory. Shouldn't you?

By the way, I am currently the only one I know of trying to kill that BOB. Twenty-five some odd tries and still no success, but I get better and better each time. The farthest I seem to get is when the Elites spawn with concussion rifles and focus rifles. My highest score on Legendary is 3400 pts. Has anyone done better?

I killed it on lonewolf legendary.

I found a way to hide behind those crates in the first building you come across (The one with the SpLaser and Armorlock) in a way that keeps enemies from seeing you, I just did that untill about 10 minutes pass, in which the BoB shows up with about four other Generals. (When I did it, BoB had a sword, so tread lightly)

As I lay in bed, staring at the stars I thought: "Where the hell is the ceiling"

Sigh.

I understand there are 60 pages to go through, but honestly there's a lot in the OP too, so at least read that before posting.

The reason we are not counting BOBshees is because they do not give a medal. As you would know if you read the OP, we ARE NOT trying to prove any theories right, we are trying to prove them WRONG.

We get a theory, ie "Get one seek and destroy medal on each mission", and then we attempt it. If and when it is proven wrong, we go on to the next one. Hence the purpose of this thread.

Another thing is that this thread is all about getting rid of the BOBS, and while the BOB helmet is indeed a product of the Bob speculation, we need to understand that the helmet is not the sole reason this thread is about.

For this reason, when someone mentions they don't believe in the helmet, or has doubts, don't tell them to leave the thread. Because the thread isn't about the Helmet, it's about the Bobs. The helmet is just a product of speculation.

TL:DR Read the damn OP and lay off Kira and anyone else who doesn't like the helmet.

On another note, this thread will either
A) Eventually die.
B) Become ridiculously popular because those such as myself, Duo, Game and KC are determined to keep it alive and discover exactly what it is the BOBS are there for.

If the thread looks like it's going towards option A, I suggest making a group. Not only will this enable us to discuss it further and deeper, but it may also get us more recognition in the eyes of those such as Bungie.

It's all up to Game, though.

UWG

I don't have anything to contribute, but I gotta say you guys have got my full support on this one, I mean it's pretty damn safe to say that killing these things, either;

-One on every Mission with certain requirements...
-In Total...

...will do something, I mean just going on the fact that this is a completely Unique enemy that is a direct reference to a previous Bungie Title; Marathon, is enough to support the argument.

But that along side the fact that they only spawn at certain locations...(and in certain circumstances)...certain Difficulties too and then usually eventually de-spawn, it's gotta be said that these things are definitely more than just a cute little enemy Bungie put in for the sake of it...they're there to be killed...

Final thing, as you've already said, Bungie has been rewarding and encouraging the Hunt of these things...I mean seriously;

-A Medal for every Single BoB eliminated...

-The Description of this Enemy is "Wipe Them Out"...

-Various Daily Challenges to kill them, one even revealing the location of a previously unknown BoB...

Now I know I'm just regurgitating information here, and I apologise, but I think it's worth noting again for all the people who doubt this, I'm not saying this is some giant thing that will Unlock some Master Easter Egg, but it sure as sh-it has got to add up to something worthwhile...
