Edit: I'm liking the looks of this thread, and it makes me want to go Bob Hunting with you (OP). If you still have room on your friends list, either add me GT: Doctor Hugs or I will send one to you when I get on. :)

Epic win. Reply within a reply within a reply... It's so complex, it's cool.

I think the BOB helmet will have something to do with Halo CE Anniversary. It could be something to do with achievements and Halo Waypoint unlocking it for you. This is what they ending up doing with the Recon armor for Halo 3 after all.

If this isn't the case... well... I hope Bungie gives us a hint or something before they go. But I really think this is the reason why they have been so quiet about this, and it would also explain Frank's hesitation to answer that one question during the interview in OP's link.

Recon & ODST where in a different context.

As for the "hint", better off asking 343i about it.

For instance split up into several parts with a script to reassemble it, which is by no means impossible, I could probably write a program to do that with a file.

As much as i would agree with it, from an amateur programmer's point of view, it's not a space consuming wise choice.

When programming something, usually you would try to take as less space as possible and keep your code as simple as possible.

Not saying this is how Bungie made their game, but i just don't see it as a viable choice. The space used to hide this, could of been used for something more essential to the game.

Just my opinion tho.

I realize that it isn't what you would normally do no, unless you were specifically trying to hide something, which seems unlikely, but it is by no means impossible.

Not saying its impossible either.... just, space consuming.

PS: can somebody please tell me where people are getting the idea that Reach has a vidmaster challenge for the BOBs lol.

It is extrapolated from the idea that they must be called BoBs for a reason, they are unlikely to be Born on Boards in a literal sense, as they are clearly not canonical (disappearing into thin air, avoiding combat, no mention anywhere else etc.)

Sorry if this is a double post...I'm not going to check while I post this. First off, it is entirely possible that they are Born on Boards, or Elites with no actual heritage (Unlike the ones born on Sanghelios.) Second, when they disappear into thin air, they are CLOAKING. Every Elite can do it, these ones just activate cloak then escape. Third, perhaps they avoid combat because they are important to the Covenant and they are not honor-bound to fight. (Which would make sense if they are Born on Boards because they wouldn't feel obligated to serve the Sangheili code of honor.) As for them not being mentioned anywhere else, I can't explain that one.

Obviously this is all speculation on my part. Except for the cloaking, I'm almost positive on that part.

They disappear, not cloak, cloaking can still be seen and walked into, they just vanish from the game completely.

Ever played marathon? A BOB, or a "Born On Board", is as the name implies; someone who was born on board a vessel. In the second game (durandal) they would teleport out of the area once their objective was complete, much like the modern BOBs. The other covenant don't do this, regardless of whether or not they can (what would be the point in the drop ships if they could?). So no, not cloaking, actually teleporting.

I've shown that they don't avoid combat, sometimes joining the others to fight, sometimes running, sometimes hiding. They seem to want to serve their own purposes, which you're right, could be a code of honour thing. They were born on the ship, didn't sign up for the military.

And them not being mentioned elsewhere? Obviously not, we're in the process of wiping them out. Lol.

Long story short: Great ideas, but no, not cloaking.

You may, however be confusing the BOBs with Ossoona

Anyway, Update time: I'm still convinced that BOBs do exist on Exodus and NA, but that there are specific requirements for finding them. I'm going to be testing out a few things in the next week or so, including (but not limited to) trying to Frog Blast the Vent Core.

The point we often forget about when theorizing they are canonical is that there are no female Elites onboard Elite war ships to my knowledge.

How would you tell the difference? I wouldn't call the elites 'male', per sé.

  • 06.22.2011 5:08 PM PDT

If the elite ranger bobs teleport where do you think they go? Maybe its possible we can teleport where ever they go like a glitch.

Just a thought

I just hope that when the secret is uncovered, its extremely hard to replicate. I'd hate for the BOB helmet to become the new hayabusa.

Also, just a thought - perhaps we will be given some clues in the terminals that they are adding into CE for the anniversary edition.

Not all who wander are lost

Spet a long time on NA today experimenting with the jetpack in different walking areas to speed up my entry/leaving time.

and thought I had seen him, reloaded saves loads of times to try and catch him before realising I was seeing nothing and I had been playing the lvl too long... it was a jumper that had just shot that I was seeing at a funny angle...

for some reason the random jumper elites (for a level full of brutes) keep sticking in my head but I'm assuming its been checked out may many times already. neway will try again tommorw lol

Don't hate the player, learn by them.

Hey game. Just a thought. They said "Wipe out ALL Bobs" not just one per level.

Maybe your meant to kill all 3 Bobs in each level or whatever. Just a tiny little thought? Probably already been mentioned.

We don't know but everything specified in the Halo 3 legendary edition Bestiary points to a male only military and generally a male dominant society. It is by no means conclusive, but it's a solid case.

How long do you have to survive on the last mission-lone wolf before BOB spawns

It's not a matter of time based survival, it's a matter of kills. At the 30-40 mark you should be well into the Elites with Swords phase and then BOB will soon appear.

I've tried that mission on Legendary so many times for the BOB...

1. No camping. X amount of kills required.
2. No camping. X amount of time to get kills required.
3. No camping. BOB has double over-shields and an energy sword.

=(

The most random crap happens to me in that mission...

Same here. I'm beginning to suspect that I'm just not good enough to take this one down.

I was just playing Winter Contingency and I noticed something, at the beginning of the mission, your team arrives in 2 falcons. One stays with you, with June riding shotgun providing 'eyes in the sky'. The other however takes off and leaves a few minutes into the level, if you watch it for long enough as it flies away it zooms off in the exact same way the banshee does in your video on 'The Package' in the glacier. This leads me to believe that it is simply just the way the engine gets rid of unnecessary flying vehicles, and that it doesn't signify a special type of unit.

Could well be, the Reach engine is really straining the hardware (see texture/mesh reductions at range, objects vanishing really quickly, long load times).

@ StateOfRuin

btw, you actually killed a BOB on Legendary on Lone Wolf.

Game History:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/Reach/GameStats.aspx?gameid=59802 8181&player=Vault%20Tec

so, if you would manage to kill your only missing BOB on Legendary on "The Package", then we could bust/confirm that theory of killing a BOB on Legendary for every mission. (assuming you have killed the two BOBshees on Exodus & New Alexandria, respectively, as I can't tell from your Bnet medals alone...)

K13

Have you tried to kill BoBs in the Data pads order?

1. first BoB of Winter contingency
2. first BoB of Oni
3. first BoB of Nightfall
4. first BoB of TotS
5. first BoB of LNoS
6. first BoB of Exodus
7. first BoB of New Alexandria
8. first BoB of The Package
9. first BoB of PoA
10. second BoB of Winter contingency
12. second BoB of Oni
13. second BoB of Nightfall
14. second BoB of TotS
15. second BoB of LNoS
16. second BoB of Exodus
17. second BoB of New Alexandria
18. second BoB of The Package
19. second BoB of PoA
20. the BoB of Lone Wolf

There are only 19 Data Pads so one of the stage is false.

  • 06.25.2011 4:13 AM PDT

Does anyone have more than 77 seek and destroy medals? I only have 22 and OP has 20.
