Good work, NyithZ. And I agree. I've killed every known BOB and BOBshee on Legendary, solo, read every datapad on Legendary, solo, and pressed every button on Legendary, solo where possible. All online. It's looking really unlikely that there is any secret unlockable.
There have been "mysteries" in every Halo game. E.g. the H2 skulls and gondola buttons, or the secret of Sandtrap. It can be fun to speculate, but let's be honest, most of the time all they turn out to be are remnants of cut features or Easter Egg type inclusions that are nothing more than what have at face-value; a bit of fun.
I read that the BOBs are referred to in a strategy guide somewhere as "Daily Challenge Elites". This gives as a good clue because those guides are usually written a while before the game is finished.
I think this is all the BOBs are. A hard-to-find and hard-to-kill enemy, to add a bit of variety to challenge matrix.
So why do we hardly ever see BOB-related challenges?
Because the support for the challenge matrix has been dreadful! The credit payouts are a joke (the per-action cR varies wildy, and they were supposed to increase in line with our average rank progression but never have done). Aside from the LASO weeklies, we haven't seen anything fresh and interesting despite many complaints and good suggestions.
Evil Otto has stated very clearly on these forums that Bungie know nothing about the "GRD" helmet. Whereas 343i obviously do. The Defiant map pack screenshot and the interview where Frankie stutters over the additional armor question tell us so.
I think once 343i are properly in charge of Reach, we will see the helmet awarded to people for doing something in-game. Maybe it will be BOB-related, or maybe it will be something new. But until 343i take over, we're not gonna see that helmet in game, and the BOBs are just for fun.
tl;dr
BOB were intended to be for Daily Challenges but have been seriously under-used.
The "GRD" helmet is 343's. We ain't finding it until they're fully in charge.
