I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.

I think I found a flaw in Halo 3's storyline. All the ships that got to the Ark had to go through the Portal on the Earth right? Otherewise it would take years to get to the Ark (not to mention you gotta know it's location.)
So we see in "The Covenant" that High Charity (cloaked) arrives at the Ark. So that means it had to go through the Portal on Earth right? So how come the Gravemind didn't drop down some Flood forms on Earth while he was about to go through the Portal?

I know he sent the ship that landed on Earth, but that's before High Charity showed up

This was discussed at length during H3's prime. I believe it was decided that we were boss enough to get rid of the ones he put on Earth.

When?

Halo 3.
They landed, they were glassed. Any Flood after High Charity left got the same treatment.

Though it could be possible that he had High Charity cloaked while he went to Earth, and decided to keep all of his forces so they could attack any enemies at the Ark.

No reason to think they didn't.

They did have a bigass fleet to contain the Flood in Ghosts of Onyx.

For the record, it was Cortana that sent the first Flood-infested ship (ahead of High Charity) to Earth with the message/warning, not the Gravemind.

My theory is half the continent was already glassed and there was no one left alive on the ground for the flood to infect so the UNSC probably nuked whatever flood did land safely from orbit.

Didact's Reprisal -
Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid
We shall fulfill our promise
We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

Well, think of it this way.

Earth is one single planet with a glassed continent, surrounded by a fleet of Elites and humans waiting in preparation for the threat of the Flood. They have already proven the lengths they will go to in eliminating such a threat.

Then there's the Ark, which becomes a higher priority for many reasons:
- It's an ancient structure that has been a threat (although indirect?) to the Flood since the Forerunners.
- The ones that want to activate all the Halos are present at the Ark by the time Gravemind arrives at Earth.
- The portal is a two-way system, meaning Gravemind can simply attack Earth after quelling the Covenant/Halo threat. He would barely have to travel.
- Also note that by attacking Earth in this order, his initial assault would be from within orbit.
- Keep in mind too that Gravemind would lose significant time and troops by attacking Earth first or along the way to the Ark.
Imagine, even if Gravemind succeeding in capturing Earth, High Charity could've been disabled along the way. If that happened, then Earth would be glassed, the Ark couldn't be reached, and the Flood might be ended right then and there, if not at least the collective in "charge" of it. Would suck for humanity, but still a losing situation for Gravemind, waiting so long only to die before even reaching the Ark.
