Subject: Recommended video card for Halo 2??

Right now I have a Radeon HD 3200. It is fairly old. I can olny play the game at 800x600 resolution with medium settings/ no anti-aliasing. What is a cheap, but effective graphics card to get maxed out performance?? Im hoping for at least 45 frames per second. Thank you all for your help.

Most Nividias after the 6000 are good.

Greetings,

Halo 2 Vista can have serious frame rate problems with any recent graphics card, i know this from experiance as I have a Nvidia Gforce GTX 260 that can play Crysis on (almost) max settings. But alas, I get lag with H2V.

This problem is present to simple bad programming/porting/testing of H2V. The graphics card recomended on the box is an "Nvidia 6100" If you are ONLY planing to buy and play H2V, i strongly sugest getting an older card such as one of the 9 series or 8 series from Nvidia's Gforce range, they are very cheap now at lots of online stores.

BOTTOM LINE:
Get an older card, it can (ironically) play H2V better that all of the new ones

P.S. dont get second hand cards or ATI's Radeon cards, ive had bad experiance with theese from the past, and I'm not trolling

I could not disagree more.

The newest generation of AMD's cards are very good and it's not fair to say they are all bad because of one experience.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was a good one.

No, but seriously, my HD4870 has help up for the past three years just fine, and the Mobility HD5870 in the laptop I'm using right now probably smokes whatever you're using. Your bad experiences could probably be chalked up to user error. Given their awesome price-to-performance ratio against comparable nVidia cards, I ALWAYS recommend higher-end Radeon HD cards to anyone looking for a new video card.

On that note, I recommend the Radeon HD 5870 or 6870 to the OP. Those two cards will run anything on the market maxed out easily, no overclocking required, provided your CPU isn't a bottleneck.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

He probably could. I have a GTX 260 too and it gets 30-40 fps on Crysis maxed out at 1440x900.

Please check your e-peen at the door when you come to this message board. Nobody cares about your specs.

Also, radeon 5870 > GTX 260 anyway...

Intel core i7 2.66ghz
Nvidia gforce GTX 260 overclocked, 1gb ram
6gb system Ram, DDR3 1066mhz
2 x 1 terrabyte HD Raid0
Audiobox USB 24-bit soundcard
1920x1080@60 display

I can run Crysis on max settings with AAx2 AFx16, 1920x1080 at about 40-60 FPS

You might wanna check your facts at the door too. The GTX 260 was viable competition... for the old HD 4870. The HD 5870 is a powerhouse compared to your card. Most review sites are stating a 70% increase on the HD 5870 compared to the GTX 260.

TL;DR: Your card sucks compared to my recommendation. Lern2computer.

Dusk, your card is top of the range and I understand that, there wasn't once that I said that my specs were better than yours. What i don't understand is your ability to read.

Also, seeing as you didn't (or couldn't) read my first post, i did not ONCE recommend my card. I recommended an older, cheaper model because the very new and expensive cards run halo 2 horribly.

Everyone knows that, at least 2/3 years ago, Nvidia were the card of choice. I'm am basing my experiences on the fact that ATIs had poorer performance, and sometimes more expensive, than Nvidias

What the -blam!- do you mean learn2computer? You are unbelievably sadistic.

So, that question wasn't rhetorical? You didn't try to insinuate in your post via underlining that a GTX was somehow better than an HD5870? You were legitimately asking me if my specs were better, instead of trying to look like some elitist to cover for your nVidia fanboyism?

Then I'll answer your question; YES.

As for the rest of your post, I'll just point out that an HD 6870 blows any game under the sun away, and out-performs nVidia's GTX465 by a wide margin despite them both costing $200. An HD 6950 out-performs nVidia's GeForce Ti GTX 560 by a wide margin, despite them both costing $240. It's not until you get above $300 until nVidia starts beating out ATi's cards at a decent price/performance.

Give this a look. Wanna spend over $300 on a card? Have fun with nVidia. Gaming on a budget? ATi's clearly the way to go.
