Subject: Destructable bodies... a new feature for the characters of Halo 2?

OXM's new article describes how indept destructable vehicles will be in Halo 2. As I have said in a past thread, you'll have several options when faced warthog, or any vehicle at that, comming at you in MP or campaign. You'll be able to jump to the side and put a bullet in the gas tank for a huge explosion. You could shoot a flat in one of the four tires and watch as the warthog flips out of control when the driver makes a sharp turn. Or, you could stick a plasma grenade on the back of the warthog as it passes you by and watch as the force from the explosion causes the back axle to snap in half! This great level of destruction is discussed indeptly in the OXM article, and I figured it was worth mentioning this example again sense this feature has been confirmed.

One of the points in giving so many options to the player, is that different types of damage will cause the vehicle to react, or atleast feel differently, as shown in the example above. Could Bungie take this same feature and apply it to characters in MP and campaign. It would add a bit more to the realism of the game. If your right arm gets damaged enough, you could no longer hold a weapon in that arm untill you get a health pax. If your left leg is damaged enough, you'll no longer be able to run as fast, or at all. Would this be a plausable feature to add to Halo 2? Would you like it? How could you use this feature to an advantage in MP or campaign? Would it change the strategy of the game?

(This last part is just my "imagine this scenarios", and my explantion for why this would be a good feature for Halo 2. If you get the jist of this topic, feel free to skip this last part; although, it is good stuff:)

I for one think it would be a great addition to the many new features in Halo 2. Imagine watching the animations of an Elite, after being shot in the knee caps several times, falling on his @$$ and then hearing him screaming for cover form his commrads while he crawled behind the frame of a burnt out warthog for protection. Imagine playing a game of CTF and you see someone from the opposite team aiming at one of your commrads, who happens to be stealing their flag. You zoom in on the guy aiming at your commrad and shoot the gun out of his hand. You then watch as the frustated bastard stuggles to recompose himself and alert his team mates of the misshap. Or even better, and this is my last "imagine this" situation; think of being dropped off by a pelican in an ongoing battle for the city (fill in the blank). As you exit the pelican you scope the scene and notice a guy getting his arm blown off. You then see his commrad yelling for a medic as he recieves two needler shots in leg and falls to the ground clutching his wounds. Unlike the first Halo, characters wouldn't always die when in battle. This would add huge level of realism, and would ultimately make you come up with new inventive strategies:)

Good idea. It would be great if Bungie could make it so its not sooo real but just adds that extra strategicness (if thats a word) to the game. Halo isn't a realistic game either, like the entire story and everything. But yeah it would be great to see a player running with the flag towards his base and shooting his legs out and him crawling while you line up your head shot.

Um no. I would hate that.

Nothing sucks more then having just barely won a fire fight in slayer then dying. That is when you can still move. It would be even more cheap and suck more not being able to run or at least put up a fight. Also for those getting the kill, it would be a hollow kill.

I don't know if I would like that level of realism.. but to some degree yes I would like it. I've always wanted to shoot the gun out of someones hand or injure someone when they ran with the flag, but I would hate for it to happen to me. It would take away from the game, or at least I think it would.

  • 05.09.2004 10:41 PM PDT

I would hate getting the cheap shot in the legs also. But, in my opinion, it would be a good thing in the long run, because you would have to come up with better strategies than run, shoot, die, repeat. Maybe it could be a feature that could be turned on or off in MP. As for campain, it might always be on to add to the experience of the Halo 2 storyline.

that feature was in goldeneye, not as advanced though... you could shoot someone in the leg and they'd limp for a bit...

I'd like it if they reacted differently depending where you shot them, I don't think it should go so far as to affect their performance though...

On a side note, I believe that the damage to vehicles will not affect the handling - only the force feedback in the controller... thus shooting out a tyre won't cause a vehicle to flip... In my opinion this is much better as it still leaves vehicles as a valuable item you'll look out for...

I was just trying to dramatize with imagery. I don't think Bungie will let it go as far as my imagination. I could see many situations where the gameplay would be sacraficed or enhanced if this feature was implemented. There would have to be a balance, just like every other new feature in the game needs;)

Eagle 117, you having a new theory is as reliable as the sun rising everyday

If I had a dime for every time I saw you coming up with a new theory, they'd have to add my name to Forbes magazine

The difference is, is that your theories have evidence and real thought being put into them; good reads

And to answer your thread, it's possible: this is Bungie, the same people who want to one day take over the world. With them, I'm thinking anything is possible. The amount of detail they put into games, and the fact that the hype for this particular game is just overwhelming, are both reasons why things like this could be added.

Also, look for the different hit damages to player models to be top-notch; I have complete faith in Bungie with that part of the game

Thank you for your kind words MakaVeli4LIfe1. I'll try to keep comming up with new ideas/theories. When it comes to Bungie there is an ocean of ideas and questions floating around in my head.

I would just like to say that even though this would be a cool effect, all military vehicles are disel and disel fuel does not explode.....

I would like to say that Halo is a Cinematic FPS. Like in any movie, realism disappeares next to the pleasing sight of a grand explosion.

Excuse me, but have you ever put a match to a tank of gasoline, it buuuuuurns. so one of them HE pistol slugs is almost certainly gonna blow the ugly mother-blam!- up. Also, how do you know what fuel is used in 2552?

your right elmicker, they might not use diesel in 2552. also, will the warthogs blow up in Halo 2? like, will they have a health bar thing like the ghosts, banshees ect?

Great input guys, but what do you think of the destructable characters thing? Would you personally like it, or no?

I would hate falling apart in the middle of a fight. I want to be as normal as possible until I fall to the ground. Then let my bones shatter, my neck break, and my spine fall out. That'll give me a reason not to die as often and to kill more people. Now the fact that vehicles can explode is great if you're trying to get the flag back in CTF. Now if you're trying to get the flag to your base and your stupid worthog desides to blow a tire on you that wouldn't be funny. Expesically during tourneys!

Although I love the idea of sniping a Gas tank, even todays Hummer's Fuel tanks are bulletproof..

Then again it IS 2552 or whatever. The new bullets prolly penetrate anything human.

According to the new OXM Halo 2 article, you will be able to destroy armor plating on all vehicles, which means you will be able to "blow up" vehicles. Place a few well placed shots in a concentrated area of armor plating, and in the case of the Warthog, a plate of armor will fall off exposing the gas tank/ dessiel tank/ future energy source tank, or the engine, drive shaft, axle, or whatever it is your trying to shoot;)

Back to the whole destructable bodies, do you guys think the feature should be added as just an animation feature in MP? For example, you shoot a guy in the leg and then he reaches for it, but he moves on with out it affecting his performance. Or, would you like the feature to actually affect the player your shooting at? For example, you get shot in the right arm to many times, then you can't hold a weapon in that hand.

At the Microsoft's E3 press conference, Bungie's own Joe S. states word for word, "The more messed up your vehicle is, the harder it is to drive." While you obiviously didn't have this info when you posted your comments, I thought it would be worth pointing out incase you're ever ingaged in another conversation such as this one.

(This reply isn't meant in a "I'm right and your wrong" way. I Just wanted everyone to know the facts:)
