How many ships were stationed on Reach when the Covenant scout fleet came into Atmosphere? It is known there were a few Frigates, but honestly, that's it? 60% of the fleet was away, I can understand that, but where is the other 40%? Home fleet? Why was there a relatively small fleet guarding the UNSC stronghold?

According to the FoR book there are over 100 human ships assigned to guard Reach, in addition to 20 Super MAc orbital guns. However Halo: Reach seems to have thrown all that out the window so who knows?

Et Eärello Endorenna utúlien.
Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.
tenn' Ambar-metta!

Not to mention the lack of Nukes. I mean how many nukes Earth has in real life? and Reach which represent the prowess of human military has none...

Seriously, I love Bungie and all the Halo games but this was messed up really bad.

According to ArmsControl.org:

China: About 240 total warheads.
France: Fewer than 300 operational warheads.
Russia: Approximately 2,600 operational strategic warheads , approximately 2,000 operational tactical warheads, and approximately 8,000 stockpiled strategic and tactical warheads.
United Kingdom: Fewer than 160 deployed strategic warheads, total stockpile of up to 225.
United States: 5,113 active and inactive [1] nuclear warheads and approximately 4,500 warheads retired and awaiting dismantlement. The 5,113 active and inactive nuclear warhead stockpile includes 1,968 strategic warheads , approximately 500 operational tactical weapons, and approximately 2,645 inactive warheads.

There was supposed to be over 100 ships in Reachs system at all times however judging by the dialog in LNoS (I think that was it) all available Nukes were used, or lost when the ships they were on were destroyed. Keep in mind this was only when the UNSC were against just the supercarrier and corvettes.

60% of the fleet was away, I can understand that, but where is the other 40%?
Guarding other colonies and Earth. I doubt they would've told every ship to go to Reach and leave everything else unguarded. You also have to take into account the ships in slipspace that were unreachable.

The way I understood it the 100 ships were on permenant assignment to protect Reach. Frankly, the other colonies would have been expendable if it meant saving Reach.

I always though the 60% was in referance to the UNSC ships that weren't assigned to guard either Reach or Earth.
