Subject: Rebel-UNSC war after Halo 3?

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

So since the UNSC at the end of Halo 3 is just a huge mess, do you think that the war between the Rebels and the UNSC would continue?
Technically it never ended when the Covie arrived. There could still be Rebels living in Asteroid fields or in far far distant systems outside the Orion Belt.
To me it would make some sense if the remaining Rebels overran the remaining UNSC and took over. The UNSC fought against the Covie, not the Rebels (if the Rebels did it was very little involvement as they just hide most of the time.)
What are your thoughts on this?

This topic was discussed in a thread a few days back. Some of the Rebel factions were still fighting the UNSC during and after the war. To what extent and size, I don't know. Hopefully more should be explained in the new Halo book series coming out later this year.

It would be naive to believe that all of humanity would band together, under any circumstances. The fighting between The Insurectionists and The UNSC would probably conitnue, but only half heartedly, as both sides would have decreased numbers. The UNSC would either try finding diplomatic solutions, or, failing that, would eventually lose the outer colonies completelly, due to lack of man power and being spread to thin.

Except that is not what the Rebels are after. They wish for each colony to become independent from the rule of Earth and the Inner colonies. Apparently the UNSC has been plundering the outer colonies for resources and leaving them with nothing. There are problems of famine in some outer colonies. Go and read the adjuncts for the new First Strike, it is all there.

They are not motivated by power or greed.

I do not think that the Insurrectionists political ideology would be powerful enough to keep Humanity divided after 23 billion people where murdered by an external threat that was beyond Human control. That is quite small minded. People often forget that the biggest dividers between Humanity are caused by religion and nationalism, and not just that "Human nature for the hell of it" response that most people give. In 500 years do you really see them still being so influential?

Look at Europe 1000 years ago, and then compare it to today. Wars are non-existent now between the European countries, and Europe was one of the most bloody battle arenas in the world. The world is far more rational than it was even 100 years ago, and continues to develop so.

Okay, going to temporarily being current affairs into this thread and hope I don't get banned. XD

I think the UNSC-rebel war is inevitable.

I think post-war UNSC/Rebel clashes would look alot like Iraq and Afghanistan do today. Large scale UNSC led occupation forces fighting rebels that don't honor proper rules of engagement.
Road bombs, hyjackings and generally un-gentlemanly acts would be commonplace.

I don't think the UNSC could hold it together for more than a decade and after that they would be forced to let some older colonies go to divert funding to starting new settlements on new planets. After 20 years two distinct human powers would exist.
The UEG(?) being the superpower, and the new smaller government only controlling a handful of planets but definetely a competing power none the less.

Anton said the truth. The reasons the rebels fought against the UNSC was the exact same reasons the USA fought against England. They were tired of following rules made by somebody who didn't know what the conditions even were in the outer colonies.

The UNSC would focus on rebuilding Earth and the Sol system, then trying to find any surviving inner colonies. The rebels in the outer colonies would be happy as -blam!-, because they got their independence.

"Wort wort wort!"

True, the Covenant did disband, but they aren't all dead. Any living covies would still be warring either not knowing that their religion was flawed or not caring.

Elites know the truth now. They made up the bulk of the leadership. The Jackals didn't care about the great journey, and would go back to their ships.

Hunters didn't care for it either, only following the elites from respect. Grunts believed but follow Elites, or brutes from fear.

So pretty much it'd just be the few remaining prophets and the brutes, only the Brutes went into infighting and sent themselves back to pre-space fairing age.

Who knows some rebel group will abandon UNSC space and settle on another planet. But resources would be a massive problem, they usually rely on stolen UNSC things.

A theory is Admiral Cole's 'death' was a fake and he did a slipspace jump out, met with his wife/ex-wife who was a rebel and his ship+her small fleet left the conflict to settle on a remote world.

People would still want their independance, regardless of what has happened. I'm not saying that it is human nature, just simple mathamatics; not everyone will band together, it's pretty impossible. I'm not looking to our past for this reasoning, but, rather, what has happened in the "future".

Yeah, but they'd be stupid to start fighting the UNSC and spending what little resources they have.

If it was me, I'd see an opportunity to kick an already crippled UNSC off of my home. If I've not been melted by the covies then my home planet is one of few powers left in human controlled space.

The few planets which were ignored would have been inner colonies, which the rebels weren't on normally. They wanted the UNSC to stop telling them how to live in the outer colonies. We have accounts of them living in asteroid bases even after the planet in the system was glassed.

£10 says that gets retconned in the coming years and the UNSC survives much better than previously thought. ;)

it would be insane to think that there wouldnt be rebel fighting after the covy war now would it startup the second the war was over probably not but after mabye 3-5years after some planets are restored and UNSC and rebel forces recover some fighting could restart
