Actually, no matter how much you hate it, Reach IS canon because a.) it is one of the games, which override all other aspects of the franchise, and b.) because it's newer than The Fall of Reach.
So one of the first halo story makers sources is no longer canon?
Shame on you it was around before halo:ce. that book basically jump started halo.
Halo:CE jump started Halo, that is the most idiotic statement I've seen in a while. The book came out before the game but it was supposed to coincide with the release of the game it just happened to come out a little earlier.
Also, Mr Evil is right so deal with it.
How does that make any sense? Something is right automatically because it's newer? There's a reason it's called established canon.
There is something also called, priority of canon.
Games, books, other materials.
If a New game comes out, and it conflicts with a book (In this case, there aren't many conflicts.) the game takes lead.
Anyway, on topic. The reason it wasn't put in his helm was it was a fragment of Cortana, and it's easier to had an armored storage unit over then unplug the chip from the helm and hand it to Keyes. Also much easier to drop a tiny AI chip instead of a storage unit.
Edit: This rule was set down by Bungie with Halo CE I believe. Kinda funny it's just now being ignored/called stupid because people don't like Reach.
