is because in Bungie fiction, it seems like every major SPARTAN character goes down in a glorious explosion. They, or their comrades, send them out with a bang that kills numerous enemies (not counting the other SPARTAN-IIIs). It's kind of a tired gimmick in the Halo Universe, that a lot of characters go down in a blaze of glory, when they should really be fewer. Say what you will about the quality of Reach's storyline, but Catherine-B320's death reminded me that SPARTANs are humans and they are in a war. In combat, death can be sudden and violent and undeserving, and Kat's death showed that, compared to other characters in the games (like Jorge and Carter) and novels (however otherwise masterfully written they may be).

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

We should know better, because we are better.

I agree. Dramatic deaths are an overused cliche in Halo. There needs to be more sudden, real deaths, not this "Send me out with a bang" stuff.

"You get what you put into it."

When Legendary is too mainstream, you have Heroic. When you're the leader of the church of MLGeezus, have Epic in your username, and can't write 'About Me's' to save your life, what do you get?

This guy. And now, an side note: Most things I post contain lethal doses of sarcasm, so be warned, and try not to take me seriously.

Finally, a message to Bungie trolls everywhere.

1 shot 2 kills

That's true and I agree but she had motion sensors and and shields. It shouldn't have happened. Maybe if Cater's Pelican just blew up or something sure.

I agree, but couldn't they have made it a little more dramatic? Yeah, I know, war is harsh and all that, but when I saw it I just facepalmed instead of bursting into tears or whatever.

Um... Glassing beam.

Radiation fried and disabled all the Noble Team's shields. Also, motion tracker only works in the thing is in motion.

For all we know that phantom could have been there since the Covenant overheard the transmission between Carter and Holland.

***SPOILERS***

Keep in mind that in Halo: Fall of Reach that James and Linda died (with the exception of Linda, she almost died) in a not-so-epic way. James just got shot in the back by a Needler in the jetpack and he soared off into space.

But I also agree with you.

Once a Mythic, always a Mythic. '04 or Bust.
Extr3me Escalator Diving

Elites of War
Indeed

And that one spartan who specialized in space combat in First Strike.

Got hit dead on by a Plasma Battery and was incinerated on the spot. Whoopsie.

I agree completely, thats something I've loved about reach, they gave alot of different views on the deaths, bar one, being Jun.
Giving gamers the only real feel for the human side of them, the books cover them quite well, but most people wouldn't bother touching them to find out.
Kat is my favourite death personly for the reasons you've said. ^.^
It's good to know there's someone else out there with some degree of taste in what they like.

thats what marines are for.

but kat died like that because she sucked. Spartans are NOT made to hack computers and provide intel (again thats what marines are for) they are made to run in there, perform impossible tasks, and kick some serious covenant ass.

@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Considering her and Carter are the last original members of Noble Team, she did kick ass. Being able to gather intel and hack computers was a bonus.

I agree and disagree. While personally I would prefer the more sudden war time deaths I suspect most of the fanbase would be pissed if main characters were constantly killed realistically as opposed to cliched action movie badass last stands.

Reach delivered both. Kat's was the realistic, sudden one and the rest went in cliched spectacular Hollywood fashion.

Not constantly killed, but I like well-done deaths. None of the constant player character deaths you see in games like Call of Duty 4 or MW2 that are stupid.

You're statement is faulted. Think of it, you have a Spartan team with a marine. They are going to next to impossible situations and the marine dies... THERE GOES THE INTEL GUY!
What I'm trying to say is some Spartans need to be intel in order for Spartan teams to acquire intel because marines just can't handle.

You know, I think he's trying to imply that Spartans can't be really intelligent and computer specialists.

"Spartans are not made to hack computers or provide intel."

To me at least, it implies that Spartans can only be "rawr smash" footsoldiers.

I wonder if knows that scouts/snipers also provide intel. Like Jun in WC and Nightfall.

And the human race is made to fight each other, in order to do these things there are side skills that are needed for various reasons. But I do see the point but still it is necissary to train them to do these things.

Kat, Six, Emile, and Jun didn't die in an explosion. We're still not even sure about what happened to Jun.

  • 04.24.2011 2:09 PM PDT

What if Emile's death was sudden, you would have to fight two more Elites Zealot, with have made the hole ting a lot harder.

Emile's death, in my opinion, isn't actually that "bad" in relation to this thread topic. He goes out swinging, but doesn't kill a million Covenant in the process.

Main characters dying in an over-dramatic fashion is a common, recurring thing with the Halo universe. Most of the SPARTAN-IIIs don't have a glorious death, and I actually think that's better. Some of the background SPARTAN-II characters don't get a glorious death either, but they wouldn't be considered "main characters". Either way, whether it's a SPARTAN activating the failsafe on a fallen comrade's armor and blowing up a lance of Covenant fighters, or Kurt-051 destroying an entire planet, you cannot deny that the pattern is there. Rarely, it seems, that a main character is killed in the line of duty in a realistic way. It's never "your favorite SPARTAN was overrun and shot while defending the other SPARTANs escape," it's always "your favorite SPARTAN backflipped into the air and landed with one toe on a plasma grenade, somehow tripling it's effect, and detonated the fail-safe in his armor which took out an entire CCS-class Battlecruiser".
