It's funny cos I just PM'ed you... The obsession with 7, as far as my knowledge goes, started in Marathon. People noticed that throughout the game the number 7, or multiples thereof appeared everywhere. As it gave recounts of history there seemed to be many occurences that were 7 years apart, or occurred on the 7th of a particular month, or spaceships that were 'whatever VII'... I'm sure you will find this sight alot better at describing this phenomenon.
http://www.marathon.org/story I believe there is a section in the facts that talks about this very issue...

I say 7 goes back further than Marathon.

Minatuar, a LAN only mac MP game allowed a maximum of - guess what? - Seven Players.

And PiD had Seven possible endings, I believe . . .

In all seriousness, 7 and 12 are historically "significant" numbers that have been considered "perfect" for thousands of years. The Bible alone crawls with those numbers (just read Revelations for a shaqadelic number trip!).

What better inside joke than to latch onto a single otherwise insignficant digit - and use it so often it drives your fans crazy as they attempt to discern its importance!

yes, Seven is Darker.

So what is with the obsession over seven?

To quote Matt Soell (well, actually paraphrase. He said this way back when in one of Bungie TV’s broadcasts, and I can’t exactly remember…)
“A bunch of numbers came along. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and then 7. Some other numbers came after that, but seven was the only real important one.”

So there you have it.

We’ve watched while the stars burned
Out, and creation played in reverse.
The Universe freezing in half-light.
Once I thought to escape.
To end a master, step out of the
Path of collapse. Escape would make us God.
Yet I cannot help but remember one enigma,
A hybrid, elusive destroyer.
This is the one mystery I have not solved.
The only element unaccounted for.
