I often see people on the Universe and Reach forums complaining that the UNSC's military weapons, vehicles and technology are inadequate to todays technology in some respects. I think I may have found a reasonable solution to why this is.
As we all now, Earth's governments are ruled under the umbrella and overwatch of the UN in 2552. And we also know that the UNSC rules with one military faction.
In today's world, if a crisis erupts in a country, they may call upon the UN for military assistance. The UN can respond in a military fashion in two categories:
1. Collective Security
2. Peacekeeping
Collective Security is simple enough to understand. If a non-agressor country that has not harmed its attackers, is invaded, the UN can send troops to defensively protect that country. The goal here is defeating the aggressors. A great example of this is when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. Kuwait called upon the UN, and collectively UN countries worked together to defeat Iraq.
Peacekeeping is different. If there is a crisis in a country between two or more parties, the UN can send in troops. One of the parties must call on the UN for help, the UN cannot send troops in in either of these scenarios without being asked. While with Collective Security the goal is to defeat the enemy, the goal in Peacekeeping is to stop the bloodshed altogether. A good example of this would be the UN's interference in Rwanda.
Some of you may be asking "Muffin, where the hell are you going with this?". Well here it is.
As of today, there is no permanent UN military. When the UN does interfere in a military fashion, the UN borrows troops donated from its members for a temporary amount of time.
Now think about this: How terribly inadequate would it be if the troops from all the countries arrived with different weapons? Some troops show up with M16's, others with Uzi's, and others with another rifle? This system would make no sense so instead the UN receives the troops and gives them all standard weapons.
My theory is that as the UN slowly began to take over power, weapons used became more and more standardized until redundant weapons simply fizzled out. So basically one Sniper Rifle, one Rocket, one automatic rifle, etc, was all the UN needed and that's all they made.
