Subject: Kat's robo arm, explanation

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

So I think I know why Kat has a robo arm.
After her arm was surgically removed (due to burns or whatever that Banshee did to it) there was a problem.
The right arm of the MJOLNIR suit was most likely damaged enough to where it had to be replaced. As far as I know, even the arm of a MJOLNIR suit should be expensive as hell. Since S-IIIs are cheap, I bet Kurt wasn't able to get the money he needed for a replacement arm for the suit. So he had it to where Kat had a temporary robo arm until he recieved enough funding to get her a new MJOLNIR arm. Then of course they would flash clone the arm for her body.
Anybody disagree with this?

i guess not. haha

I mean, its basically a replacement for a lost arm, i didnt think there needed to be much explanation.

Why would she need the armor if there's not anything there to protect?

... Or she got her arm blown off and now has a robotic replacement.

You might be overthinking this a tad.

I remember during Onyx, an SIII said that he didn't want to be too close to a flash bang, because it would rupture his eardrum and he would have to wait a few weeks for a replacement.

I think that it should be pretty easy to get a replacement, as the arm losing incident was a few weeks before the fall of Reach.

There's that guy in Contact Harvest, the captain, who has a robotic arm. There's some reason he didn't get a replacement, maybe they're not as mobile as a robotic arm?

And considering the amount of money they already put into the S-III program and the cost of training an individual Spartan, replacing an arm was probably the deal of the century.

I'm just saying that they could have possibly replaced her arm with a flashcloned, but it would be unprotected.

  • 04.26.2011 6:40 PM PDT

Dr, Halsey's journal says Mjolnir is modular, it shouldn't be that hard to replace, and the expensive parts of the armour are the microfusion plant and AI support crystal, so it shouldn't have been too expensive to replace.

"You were weak... and gods must be strong."

By the time she was on Noble Team, she was well out of Kurt's hands. Replacing armor wouldn't have been his funding or his call. He merely made the recommendation for her to be on Noble.

THAT SAID, some Spartans don't want a 'false' replacement, or a flashcloned bodily replacement. It's one of the J-Spartans (Joshua maybe?), but remember when he got his arm blown off by a Hunter? He never replaced that with a flash-cloned arm. He never replaced it period if I recall.

Similar thing for Kat, possibly- she simply refused to get a new arm that wasn't hers.

Theory number two: Yeah, you can flashclone replacement body parts.. but for a Spartan? Heh, you'd be hard pressed. Robotic replacements were probably more ideal for Spartans who lost limbs- a flash-cloned replacement arm wouldn't be able to take on the MJOLNIR armor without getting pulverized.

Is it even possible to flash clone arms and then reintegrate it into the body? I don't really think that it'd be possible to do that and get it all connected right. From my understanding, and memory, of human anatomy it'd be much harder, maybe impossible(?) to reintegrate something like an arm or leg if they were removed.

This is 500 years in the future, mind you. We may have made new breakthroughs in neuro-technology alongside with anatomy and cloning/reattachment.

That is possible, though I'm thinking that flash cloning and reintegrating limbs isn't possible, since none of the characters that have appeared so far and have been missing them have only had cybernetic prosthetics. But that doesn't mean it's impossible I guess, so yeah, it might very well be possible, but we haven't really seen any indication that it is :/

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

My Spartan lost his arm once, but then I got bored of his robotic arm and gave him a flash cloned arm and now he is just like he was before (:

c wat I did dere?

The problem is, I'd assume, that flash-cloned replacements just aren't going to be as well adjusted or toned for military positions- ESPECIALLY as a Spartan. The arm wouldn't be able to withstand the MJOLNIR's bone-shattering reaction times, and would only be a liability.

because losing your arm again (mechanical or not) is very inconvenient.

yeah...i think...was it kurt? well somebody died as a result of one of her plans...in that battle she lost an arm... and she got a robot arm...end of story...

Thom, it's never stated it was her plan, just that she was carrying the bomb.

I'd have to go with that. A new flash cloned arm wouldn't have the augmentations and would probably be borderline useless for a spartan.

Didn't the augmentations essentially become a part of their genetics though? I would think they would, because they'd run into the problem of having to re-augment them if it wasn't part of their genetics, I could be wrong, been a while since I too biology.

To be honest the only reason she has a mecha arm is because it would look cool in the game and set her apart from the others.

Lore wise naturally i would say because they are SIIIs that they wouldn't always be given the best resources, so i'd think a mecha arm would be cheaper and faster than cloning another one.

No, nothing done to the Spartans involved genetic manipulation, it was all either biochemical or bio mechanical.
