It seems strange that the forerunners would just destroy the precursors, since their overriding directives involve the Mantle of preserving life.

This is not to say that all of the forerunners shared this view and maybe there were warmongering corrupt forerunners.

One thing I thought of is that maybe the Flood were the precursors. I know this seems impossible since the current flood rely upon a host. But maybe there was an original type of flood like the pure flood form that was super intelligent( psychic ) and they created other creatures including the forerunners as sort of slaves to build for them. The forerunners maybe didn't like it that same parasitic bug race was their master and they rebelled and followed around the galaxy by the ships with a type of flood they couldn't defeat despite being able to defeat the original "Flood/precursor race" Perhaps this may explain the connection between the Gravemind and the last living precursor.

I know this is a long shot but just wanted to throw it out there maybe more so that it can be dis proven early and we can move on to more viable theories.

If the precursors did create the forerunners than it is just a normal sc-fi theme that the forerunners would rise up and destroy them.

I personally hate people talking about this "mantle" seeing how we have no actual material on the mantle other than references. The mantle is nothing more than a piece of paper written by ancient forerunners justifying what they are doing in the galaxy.

Well some people think that the Graveminds are the actual precursor that are infected. but thats really it.

I agree with that first bit, that would just be generic sci-fi and would be rather boring. I think it might have been indicated that the Forerunners and Humans were created by the Precursors though, at least that's what I remember.

How do you know the origins of the Mantle didn't originate with the Precursors though? I mean yeah, sure the ancient Forerunners probably did create the Mantle everybody talks about to justify their actions and conquering the rest of the galaxy, but I think it's still a possibility that the origins of the Mantle were created by the Precursors.

I read about this somewhere.
But it makes sense, the Precursors were much more advanced technologically then the Forerunners, but they were peaceful so didn't had as much weaponry as the Forerunners and they got wiped out by them, but since they had such developed technology they manage to make the flood as a last moment revenge.

Because i am looking at the bigger picture.

The forerunners don't even remember going to war with the precursors yet they believe/know that the mantle was given to them by the precursors?

The librarian herself states that the mantle is nothing more than a myth. that alone says enough.

Its similar to whites using the Bible to justify slavery in early america, yet they wouldn't allow blacks to read the bible or learn how to read :/

Being peaceful doesn't mean that you can't ever get angry or have weapons. its more of what would you do in certain circumstances, how would you react.

There was a race in another sc-fi universe called "Xeelee" if i remember right. They were considered a peaceful race but had to fight humanity for thousands of years due to humanity attacking them.

Yet the xeelee finally decided to end the war and pushed humanity back to the sol system and trapped them in some sort of dimensional bubble.

They viewed humanity as nothing more than a "distraction" while they combated another race that was messing with stars in order to live in them. But this race didn't even know the xeelee existed for the most part or any other life; it was just doing what it had to do for it's own survival.

I know that i am getting off subject, but the forerunners de-evolved humanity the first damn chance they got do to this arbitrary "mantle" while the xeelee merely put them in time out despite starting the whole conflict.

Which is why the forerunners deserve to be condemned
