i for one enjoy looking at maps. i also like it when, in a game such as this, you are given a mission briefing outlining objectives and maps are used to show points of interest, projected enemies, etc. obviously in HALO, this wasn't done because HALO was new territory. but in HALO2, a lot of the fighting seems like it will be done on earth, so what's stopping the humans from having a bit more intel?
it might be interesting to have a starting weapon selection screen available, too. so, by studying the maps and the projected enemy reports, you could make a decision on what weapons to take with you.
this idea could even be used as an option for MP. i know many people have already stated their interest in having a "class" based MP option. this could be similar in that starting gear could be altered to allow you to fit a particular mold, but it wouldn't prohibit you from picking up other weapons along the way, so you can fill a more important need if it should be necessary.
and yes, i already know many of you will say "that's stoopid! everyone on the team will choose to start with snipers/rockets, full grenades! what fun is that?" to which i will pre-emptively respond by saying "that's why it would be an option." one which, if i may say so myself, would add yet another strategic element to team games (team cohesiveness). and it would also eliminate the practice of camping near the only spawn point of a particular weapon in the level. but maybe there could be a limit on how many per team can be allowed to use a particular weapon.

For me, it depends if all that coding and artwork would cost me another multi-player map. If not, I'd love it. The reality of it for multiplayer is that players wil go in alone when noone else is around and explore every nuance of the map in order to get an edge, to familiarize themselves. In short order noone will be looking at the map anyways.

Weapon selection wouldn't bother my crew. We already disallow anyone to pick up the rocket launcher in many games. (We have one annoying player that would never hesitate to fire it point blank in close quarters and it was frustrating everyone)

It could also be set up in a fashion where the weapons are divided into packages. The rocket launcher and sniper rifle might only be available with the pistol of the non-scoping none-explosive tipped variety which would be something of a detractor for taking such a powerful weapon.

yeah, the mission briefing screen idea was more for the SP game, with the weapon selection option for both SP and MP.

that's a good idea too, although i would still want to be able to find and use a different weapon to replace the pistol. if we weren't allowed to do that, then it'd be too close to a "class" system, and the flexibility of being able to fill an immediate need in a team game, would be lost.

It's a little to Delta Force-ish.

oh, c'mon. i'm not talking about dirt bikes that have rockets that fire out the back (haha, don't remember which one that's from). just a little something to add a little more flavor to the game. and i hope you're not suggesting that i'm comparing MC to friggin' chuck norris...

The whole point behind the package was to eliminate doubling up like you said. If you can only choose one of your two weapons then everyone can't use the same cheap combo. There's likely only one Sniper or Launcher on any given base so it should balance. The entire group can't end up with the combination.

Can you also imagine if every person in a group went for the Sniper rifle in a large map and just hunkered down waiting for the enemy?

Still, there's a disadvantage to the Sniper and Rocket Launcher now in Halo 2. Frankie has let us know that they've pretty much decided thay they're not dual wieldable in any fashion. What you have to worry about is the Double Shotgun combination in a tight quarters map.

in online co-op you could choose your class and rank when you join the game, then come up with a master plan where the sniper will stay back, a spy will look at the situation before others and the driver, gunner and AV will deal with the enemy in a warthog, the spy could get in a scorpian with some snipers, AV's and take out the remaining tanks...

i'm getting my hopes high on online co-iop aren't i.
