Battalion = 300 to 1,300 soldiers

Divisions = 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers

Numerous marine divisions and the 7th shock troop battalion took part during the Battle of Earth, and thats just Navy.

Why is it that only the Forward Unto Dawn and a few marine and odst battalions were sent to possibly the most decisive battle of the war? Especially since Truth's fleet consisted of 27 CCS class Battlecruisers and 3 Assault carriers while the fleet of retribution had a total of 9 CSS class Battlecruisers plus the Forward Unto Dawn which is incredibly outmatched and hardly took part in the battle.

Trussingdoor is pretty kewl. He fires lasers and doesn't afraid of anything.

Because you touch yourself at night!

OT: Because the main purpose was to protect Earth? And the Navy had lost alot of ships already?

First off, I would imagine tens of millions of soldiers took part in the Battle of Earth, not just 100,000 or so.

Secondly, the ships that hadn't been destroyed already were next to useless against Truth's fleet. While I agree that the UNSC could have deployed more corvettes and frigates to support the ground forces.
That said, Forward Unto Dawn couldn't of carried all the equipment that you see when your on the Ark meaning that UNSC ground forces were either deployed aboard Elite ships, or more forces were deployed behind the scenes.

It also seems as though the UNSC Marine Corp and UNSC Navy are running very thin as of 2552. While UNSC Army ranks seem full, throughout the games we see the same Marines repeatedly (Johnson, Stacker, Buck) it is likely that all the availible Marines, i.e. the offensive branch, were deployed to the Ark.

I think they just kept Stacker and Jhonson because they're funny as hell... the writers did, I mean. Cannonically you have a point.

They took what ships and equipment they could spare.

Forward Unto Dawn carried the Chief and the first ground squads. Reinforcements were on the Elite cruisers.

Tactically it makes sense, the Dawn is no good to them in space, so it was tasked with getting on the ground quickly.

you have a point, but maybe the game engine couldn't handle much more friendly AI at once than was already ingame

Because strategically its far easier to hide one or three ships then it is a hundred, the chances of success through attrition are much higher with a tiny group.
As it was the forward unto dawn not only managed to evade all them cruisers but they also managed to land on the ark AND stay there... it maybe also helped that the covenant being the maniacal zealots they are were probably awestruck at the majesty of the ark.

What a waste....

Remember how the Flood were coming to Earth?

Yeah.

  • 04.27.2011 7:15 AM PDT

they didn't even know what they were getting into when they went through the keyship's portal. plus flood was on earth. plus humanity's forces had been worn pretty damn thin by the covenant war

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

Their really weren't many marines left.

That was an exaggeration seeing how only voi was contaminated.

It would take days to glass half of Africa and i doubt hood would just sit there and watch them do it. Not to mention they wouldn't have enough ships to do something like that so fast.

Because Bungie is awful at portraying any massive scale battles.

"OH GOD! SIX COVENANT SHIPS INBOUND SIR!!!!"
*homefleet is destroyed*

I always thought that was weird. Even with Truths fleet i don't think pretty much the whole home fleet should have been destroyed.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Because whatever was left after fighting Regrets fleet and then Truth's was near to nothing.

Anyways, you heard Hood. They were going to try and hold their ground on Earth for the comming Flood Invasion that would eventually never hit. The UNSC sent forces, but not all of it to help the Elite's.

Anyways, they had no way to know what was on the other side of the portal.
