Subject: Do Spartans get paid?

I was just wondering this. Do they receive a monthly paycheck? I can't see you average Spartan ever getting leave, let alone having free time to go to the mall. Maybe it's being kept for them in some government mutual fund, and in the unlikely event they survive long enough to retire they get it?

Well, after the war the surviving Spartans spent the rest of their lives at Burger King because they have no qualifications. So yeah, they would get a pay check.

Spartans are in the military until they die. Its the big ball and chain...with a chain gun.

When spartans get to old or crippled, their shipped to ONI to do strategics and communications or just as janitors.

Wrong...

We have an account of a Spartan who retired to start a family.

i'm sure when they are no longer fit for battle, they do other military jobs/ reaching the top shelf. i don't see why they wouldn't get paid (or at least allowances)

But Maria retired after testing the MARK VI with ODST's. She wasent crippled or had any incapabilities. How was she allowed to retire, especially after the fall of Reach?

I dont have the Graphic Novel, so I'm not completly sure on that story.

We don't know the circumstances of her retirement. Spartans were a valuable assetbut limited in numbers. I doubt ONI would allow one to simply stop fighting in the middle of a war when thhey are needed most. Unless of course i was for a good reason. Perhaps they made her "retire" and stat a family to see what, if any, enhancements might pass from a spartan to his/her children.

Well, maybe she was wounded. But it still remains that she retired and was asked if she wanted to come back into service.

Paycheck while in active duty, no.
Paycheck if crippled and unable to fight, probably yes

Plenty, if not all the Spartans were wounded at one point or another and they all stayed in service. And she wasn't crippled because she was used to test the Mk. VI suit. I'm saying that her "retirement" might be a front to disguise her mission i.e. pop out a few baby Spartans. I'm sugesting that she is actally still in active duty, under cover if you will. As for her being asked to return to duty, not everyone in the UNSC know everything abou everything. Even within ONI secrets ae kept.

During the augmentation progress, many spartans, (While still kids and crippled,) were sent to ONI facilities because they were extremely intelligent. Plus, the cannon of the Halo: Graphic Novel has been questioned multiple times.

Maria is fit as a fiddle, otherwise she wouldn't be testing out MJOLNIR. There ae no implications that she was crippled in the slightest. Even the crippled Spartans were still in active duty, albeit desk jobs. Then they were later fixed by Halsey and rejoined the others in combat roles. Marias situation is obviously unique.

Why was the GN's canonicity questioned? It doesn't break any existing canon.

There's speculation on Maria being the Spartan who was too injured to return to active duty. This can't be Ralph CAUSE HE'S DEAD.
Either way Spartans do get paid. They get paid in gum.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

What would they need money for?

For nothing. They get all the equipment they need from NAVSPECWAR.

Once again, there is nothing at all to suggest that Maria is crippled, disabled or physicallu impaired in any way at all.

Spartans are weapons, property of the UNSC. They cannot have paychecks becuase they have no bank accounts. How could they have one if they (for the first big part of the war) didnt even existed as far as the general public new. They didnt even have last names: Hi, I would like to withdraw 1,000 from my account, it is under the name of Jorge 052!

And as far as Maria starting a family, I think it was a bunch of crap. The Fall of Reach clearly states that the agumentations kills their s.e.x.u.a.l drive! IT IS IN THE BOOK!

Having a -blam!- drive is different than wanting children.
Either way, there is only 1 Spartan that was injured and couldn't be on Reach. Maria is the only Spartan elligable for that role.

Anyway I'm sure that if Spartans wanted something the UNSC would pay for it. I'm sure Master Chief has some living quarters on Reach that has weights and training gear in it.

Suppressed is not the same as not having one, Spartans still have a -blam!- drive, they just don't feel that much of an urge because it's toned down.

true to that. MC obviously has feelings for Cortana.
Also in the real world I highly doubt that when couples talk about having children they aren't horny as -blam!- at the moment.

Also, if my memory serves me right, it wasn't even something that was intended as an augmentation. It was merely a highly likely side-affect to one of the many augmentations.

Indeed, it's one of the risks of the thyroid augmentation.

Name: Catalytic Thyroid Implant
Description: A platinum pellet is implanted in the left thyroid gland, this pellet contains a human growth hormone that is released into the body to boost growth of skeletal and muscle tissues. As the hormone is released into the body the pellet dissolves and is absorbed. The hormone targets and stimulates the growth of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers, effectively producing significant gains in muscle mass. The hormone also targets osteoblasts to help boost bone tissue formation and effectively strengthen the bone structure.
Risks: Rare instances of Elephantiasis. Suppressed -blam!- drive.
