Many will enter, only one will rise to the top and he might not even win....

Can someone give me a Summary of the events in the Myth series? I found it interesting in the short videos I saw but don't have the game.

Can someone give me a Summary of the events in the Myth series? I found it interesting in the short videos I saw but don't have the game.

First of all, let me say that you can download a free demo of Myth 2 from Project Magma. You can also get a full copy of Myth 2 from amazon.com for pretty cheap. This is an especially good deal because if you have a copy of Myth 2, you can download and play the entire Myth: TFL campaign for free.

Secondly, Myth has a complex, nuanced story and no summary can sufficiently delve into its cavernous depths. Also, if you do plan to purchase the game sometime in the future (I highly recommend it), I don't want to spoil the main plot points for you. So here is a brief summary which is relatively spoiler free:

The Myth series consists of two games: Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth II: Soulblighter. The series (particularly Myth TFL) is heavily influenced by Glen Cook's Black Company series of fantasy novels. Myth takes place in a Medieval fantasy world. The Myth universe is dominated by a never ending cycle of Light and Dark. Approximately every thousand years, power over the world will transfer from Light (humans, dwarves, and other natural denizens of Myth) to Dark (evil sorcerers, ravenous beasts, and legions of the undead) or vice versa. At the critical moment, either a great hero or terrible villain will rise up to tip the scales and define each era.

At the beginning of Myth: TFL, a dark sorcerer of unequaled power (known as Balor) has appeared. Balor and his 6 sorcerer generals (known as Fallen Lords) command the armies of the undead. Starting in the extreme east, they have moved west conquering all of the civilized lands. As Myth: TFL opens, one of the Fallen Lords is besieging the last unconquered human city. From this city, a group of nine Light sorcerers (known as Avatara) organize a ragged army to combat the overwhelming numbers of the Dark armies.

The story is told through the journal entries of a soldier in one of the Light Legions. A reading from the journal precedes each campaign mission. As Myth: TFL progresses the Armies of the Light push east, defeating Fallen Lords, collecting magical artifacts, and recruiting allies. Eventually the Legion travels far into the east and reaches Balor's fortress in the ruins of an ancient city. Most of the Legon is sacrificed in the siege of Balor's fortress, but small a group of elite soldiers led by the foremost Light Avatara are able to kill Balor. With Balor and most of the Fallen Lords dead, the armies of the Dark disperse and the forces of Light celebrate an unexpected victory.

Myth II: Soulblighter picks up 60 years after Balor's death. All of the Fallen Lords were either killed or immobilized with one exception: Soulblighter. Soulblighter was the most brutal and devoted of Balor's generals. He escaped death at the end of Myth: TFL. In Myth 2, he returns with the goal of annihilating the denizens of Myth permanently. In order to exact his revenge, Soulblighter unleashes the most fearsome and vile creatures in the history of Myth. These demons were personally responsible for ushering in one of the earlier Dark cycles. Their defeat and imprisonment marked the beginning of the most prosperous Light cycle in history.

In the past 60 years, the Avatara who defeated Balor has since become King. Soulblighter's reappearance forces him to organize an army. He must forge new alliances, find a way to defeat an army of nearly invincible demons, and stop Soulblighter from destroying all of Myth.

This is a brief and very general summary of Myth. For the sake of brevity and to avoid spoilers, I've left out almost all of the details. If you would like to explore the Myth Universe more extensively, I recommend playing the game, reading the Legends and Lore sections of Myth.bungie.org, or asking more specific questions here in the Underground. If I may be permitted a bit of self-promotion, you could also check out the Bungie.net group For Carnage, Apply Within. We host online games of Myth II: Soulblighter on a regular basis and are eager to explore and capable of discussing the Myth universe in great detail.

P.S. - Thanks for asking a Myth question. We don't see very many of those anymore.

Yes. Madrigal is the last free city which the Fallen Lords are besieging at the beginning of Myth: The Fallen Lords.

And that's of course where the Siege of Madrigal track comes from.
