Whilst playing Halo as many times as i have, i have always wondered what those giant towers are on the first halo level. You know the one that fire those gigantic blue plasma - lasers. they seem to go towards the other side of the ring, but they disappear before they reach it ( Most likely because it is so far away!!!)

Are they some kind of Power Core on the other side of the ring? Is there a similar structure that recieves the blast because there is no sign of one in any of the levels.

Can anyone quench my thirsty interest for info??

Yes perhaps, but why are they Active if the rings weaponry are not online, i mean at the point that you first disciover those towers the index is still safely locked away in The Library, so how could it be Halo's weaopns?

Also if you look inside them, they significantly resemble a plasma grenade, but the weapon is a giant DARK blue laser beam

I think they're used to keep it rotating (Halo needs something to provide the centripetal force).

I think they are some sort of signaling mechanism or something

I can remember reading in a strategy guide that they help maintain the rings structural integrity. don't know if this is true though but its plausable as to how the ring stays together.

I believe they generate Oxygen, for the ring's atmosphere.

What about the trees and (though uncertain) water plants.

I always imagined that when the Reclaimer hits the big red Flood Starvation Button, all those things fired at once, their unbroken blasts meeting in the center of the ring and the reaction creating a great spherical detonation which expands through the galaxy, annihilating any thing the Flood may have cared to nibble on.

But I’m no engineer. Could just be a beacon to help you find where you parked your car.

i think they transfer energy to the other side of halo, on halo pc they can blast you out of the sky if you fly through it at the wrong time on MP.

they can also be used as a weapon ofcourse.
