[Insert something funny]

This question has always come to mind. Why aren't Spartans suited with silenced weapons. Spartans would do more damage with more objectives done, and less Spartan casualties. In missions like the scouting mission in Nightfall, and infiltration of the Truth and Reconciliation, the missions would of gone on without a hitch. I know the silenced weapons weren't in the games for a curtain reason, but its strange that in the books that Spartans are not armed with them.

What do you guys thing?

I believe I remember hearing the Spartans in one of the books use a few silenced weapons, I'm skimming through my books as you read this to find out which.

Spartans use suppressed weapons (headhunters). They don't use them in games either due to not having them (Alpha Halo, all specialist equipment was lost while in space) or they decided to use a "loud" sniper rifle, possibly the suppressed version was less effective.

They frequently are in the books. The first mission the Chief and his team undertook they had silenced weapons. Sgt. Johnson and his team use them in the opening of Contact Harvest.

Silenced rounds usually travel much slower then their normal counterparts, which would severely reduce the power and range of a sniper rifle.

RL reason- Bungie probably never got around to putting silenced weapons in the games for whatever reason

In universe reason- Spartans have used silenced weapons before in the books but probably haven't in the games because in the trilogy you were bouncing around with normal marines with SI equipment so no silencers. Also equiping a weapon with a silencer decreases its performance so the spartans just chose not to use them often.

And contrary to popular belief "silencers" don't completely remove the gunshot. Just dampens it a bit. Thats why the proper term is "suppressor". You can still be heard by anyone not dead or asleep.

Slower rounds can do much more damage under certain conditions, I believe.

Sabot rounds are not slow. The whole reason for using a sabot is to hyper-accelerate an undersize projectile.

Well, if it's any indication by ODST, silenced weapons don't actually work.

Ever test the hearing range of a 9 foot tall space gorilla Amigo?

No, but I imagine that the hearing of a space dog with a breath mask isn't very well.

Supressed weapons, not silenced. No firearm is ever silent in it's operation.

As for the games, you never really play a mission where you would need, or have them availible to you.
As for the books, don't know if they do or not. I guess that is left up to the readers imagination.
They would be issued with them when required though.

An argument against the 'Sniper rifle' being supressed though, when your shooting 3-4miles, your target isn't going to hear or see you anyway. :P It makes sense to use a faster round when your fighting 8 foot shielded monsters.

Yeah, but you'd think by then they would have super silent suppressors.

Look at the MP5SD and variants. As far as suppressed firearms go (military, not taking into account rounds such as .22 rimfire) they are amongst the quietist, but it comes at a price. Sub-sonic rounds severly reduce the effective range, limiting it to <50m in some cases.

In regards to shields, this range will be further decreased to the point that knives would be the better choice, given the speed of a SPARTAN.
