In Halo: Reach, that is. All the troopers you see in that level have the same armor pattern, one that you don't see anywhere else in the game. You know, with the enclosed helmet and mismatched shoulder pads.

As far as the game is concerned, are they supposed to be, like, elite troopers somehow?

They're marines from the PoA.

Yep. The guys with enclosed helms are marines. Everybody else are Army troopers.

You encounter Army troopers in that level (alive or dead) up until after you enter the shipbreaking yards. Then it is all marines.

Likewise, you encounter marines in LNOS space sections.

The troopers that are alive in the PoA level are marines, not army despite character models. They refer to themselves as marines in the Bone Yard section of the campaign.

I thought they were supposed to be MPs or something because of the helmet they were wearing >_>

The helmet they have are sealed, so they can go into space without their faces exploding.

But I don't know why Marines have them on the planet's surface.

What he's referring to is that the Military Police helmet in the armory is the same as those the troopers are wearing.

Um, actually I was talking about the corpses you find prior to boneyard. They are all the army trooper armor with the open helm. I don't remember them calling themselves marines...

And the two/three squads in the boneyard MP area are all army trooper getup.

Im pretty sure that they are marines from the PoA. Seeing that they can fly Sabres and be good with ground combat (like seen in LNoS), I guess they are a little better than the usual soldier. However, those guys (in LNoS) could have just been specially trained or something.

Not talking about the dead bodies hence why I say the live troopers you see in the boneyard area.

If you manage to get Emile to regroup with the female trooper at Boneyard she'll give the Spartans a situation report followed by her outright stating "Marines, move out". Despite the trooper model, they're still marines as they address themselves as such in that area.

It's tricky. The dialogue triggers in Halo:Reach only activate under specific circumstances which is really annoying as I like playing through the campaign and hearing the dialogue of everything. The easiest dialogue mistake to reproduce is in Winter Contingency when you get to the relay station after the doors close. It's a random chance that Carter will actually talk about how Emile should stay at the door or simply not say anything at all.

In any case, as far as I'm aware from all my campaign runthroughs, that moment in PoA is the only moment in all of campaign where army trooper modeled soldiers are referred to as Marines.

Actually look at the Marines running in the hangar of the PoA when Keyes flies in. Some of the Marines have that other armour, the one with the green eye peice.

It's only in the last level were the troops are marines. You can see a notable difference in the color of their armor. Army Troopers have desert camouflage, while Marines have a mix of brown, gray, and green.

  • 04.30.2011 6:05 AM PDT

On a side note, I've also noticed how some dialogue appears very rarely. I was playing through "PoA" on co-op at Normal difficulty, and it was the first time I'd heard Emile talk to the soldiers at Boneyard. It was also the first time I'd heard him say "There's enough dead Spartans today" after Carter died.

I guess my next thread should ask about difficulty-specific dialogue.

  • 04.30.2011 6:40 AM PDT

In the last level they are Marines.

However, given the PoA's importance and (former) mission before Reach was attacked, I believe that their unique armour/fatigue colours and enclosed helmets signifies an elite, special operations capable unit of the UNSC Marine Corps.

I propose that is should be taken that Marines outside of PoA would be issued with the same armour as PoA marines (large armoured collar), and open Army helmets, but in green, with green multicam fatigues.
This is due to the armour in Reach being a visual revamp of that in 2/3 as well as the Marines in 2/3 having the armoured collar.

Yes, most of what I said is redundant. :P
