We are determined that before the sun sets on this terrible struggle our flag will be recognized throughout the world as a symbol of freedom on the one hand and of overwhelming force on the other.

I want to look at the simulation of a space battle between the UNSC & Covenant. I will use my knowledge of the Halo Universe to review the battle, and its outcome, along with things that do and don't make sense.

UNSC 13th Fleet, consisting of 97 ships, is currently stationed over Hypron, a fake planet.

Suddenly, 47 Covenant Ships jump into the system, over the other side of the planet.

Now, before we go into the next stage of discussion, you tell me what you think the battle would we like.

What is it, then? A space station?

The covenant fleet zerg rushs the UNSC. The UNSC coordinates their attack having 3 or 4 ships target a single covenant ship to destroy them as quickly as possible.

The UNSC wins but over half of their fleet is either destroyed or severly damaged.

Error 404:
-Error not found.

I'm betting for the covenant on this one, as long as their ship commanders are competent, which in reality they should be.

Hmm, what's the fleet composition for each side?

Assuming about 90% of the human ships of the ships carry shiva nukes and Mac cannons, they would probably destroy the majority of the covenant fleet in the first salvo if they all fire their Mac's and Nukes relatively quickly. The remaining covie ships fire their salvo killing around probably under 50% of the human fleet (since there would only be around 15-20) and the humans will probably finish the last of the covenant of with more Mac shots, Longswords with nuclear missiles and ship's use of archer missiles on any un-sheilded opponents.

The UNSC has an advantage given they are already in position while the covenant will have just jumped into the system giving the UNSC the time they need to aim and fire.

My opinion, anyway

EDIT: I would say all 47 ships lost on the covie side unless a few bug out and retreat, and about 60, maybe 65 UNSC ships lost.

Covenant Heavies stay back and bombard UNSC ships with energy projector fire, shooting down Shivas and Archer missiles with pulse lasers and dodging MAC rounds. Frigates and destroyers use precision slipspace jumps to get in behind and amoung UNSC ships, wreaking havoc with plasma torpedoes.

End result, The UNSC doesn't have enough ships to swing the battle, they'd get their licks in but ultimately lose. 3:1 is the standard requirement to defeat the Covenant in space, they just don't have it.

Thats assuming the covenant have time to get into formation. Keep in mind, they just came out of slipspace and may not be in an ideal formation. the UNSC can quickly detect the slipspace rupture and fire macs and shivas quickly.

>Pulse Lasers are like point defense guns, no range.

>A Capital Class Ship can NOT dodge a MAC round.

The Covenant's ability to navigate slipspace is far superior to the UNSC's. They are quite capable of exiting slipspace already in formation.

What a waste....

UNSC has nuke mines, right?

If so, and if they are stationed nearby, detonate them and FUBAR the Covies.

If not, UNSC is obliterated. 2:1 odds aren't good enough.

The only way to dodge it is being extreme range for a MAC cannon.

Like the super-cruiser in Fall of Reach, it dodged Super MAC rounds simply because it was so far away.

Thus the part where they stay far back and use their energy projectors, just like the supercruiser in FoR. As for pulse lasers, if they are at least as powerful as a GARDIAN laser from Mass Effect, they can hit targets 10-30km away, more then sufficent for a nuke detonated in a vacuum.

I'm pretty sure that the 40% lightspeed was a typo, and was actually supposed to be 0.4% the speed of light.

Check this link out, paying special attention to the notes section:

Alright it was corrected in the re-release of FoR. It's still 0.4% light speed.

  • 05.01.2011 5:13 PM PDT

Alright it's 0.04%, whatever. My math, she is not so good somethimes.

  • 05.01.2011 5:21 PM PDT

It'd work like a game of advance wars. Probably similar to Heavy Tanks (covie) against more Neo Tanks (human).

  • 05.01.2011 5:26 PM PDT

I don't think the supercruiser was using the standard energy projector. The energy projector is what you see in Halo 2, 3, ODST, and Reach for glassing (and the destruction of the grafton.)

Still, It depends heavily on the makeup of the two fleets in question.

And I quote, from page 320 of the 2010 release of Fall of Reach;

"There were twenty Super MAC guns in orbit. They could accelerate a three-thousand-ton projectile to point four-tenths the speed of light-and place that projectile with pinpoint accuracy."
