So call it a joke. The idea of it is like the idea that Cortana and Master Chief were in a relationship. Bungie makes it appear as so, but there really isn't anything but a battle-hardened relationship and there only friends.

Um... that's a fan based idea, not a Bungie one.

We have three examples of Spartans who have relationships.

Kat and Carter.
Two members of Black Team.
Maria, who went to start a family.

yes, all spartans are virgins. What can I say, they were made to kill.

Spartan-IIIs undergo the same augmentations as the S-IIs, thus they have the same implant.

And the message is explicit: The thyroid implant suppresses sex drive. It's simple grammar. Risk: rare instances of elephantitis. Suppressed -blam!- drive. Two separate ideas. Not elephantitis comma suppressed -blam!- drive, it's elephantitis period suppressed -blam!- drive.

And just because the sex drive is supressed doesn't mean they couldn't have relationships.

Actually no they don't. Spartan II's had surgery done to their bones to make them unbreakable "Carbide Ceramic Ossification" they had to break the bone and re-make it with the metal already grafted and thus needed the Thyroid implant to actually grow, while the Spartan III's had the augmentation chemically induced so there was no need for a Thyroid implant, seeing how their bones were unscathed.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Carter and Kat are the only ones that pop into my mind, maybe Tom and Lucy but I see that happening in the distant future when they don't have the Covenant to fight and they get out of the Micro-Dyson Sphere.

I concede on S-IIIs, but I still doubt they had -blam!- relationships. What female Spartan would want to be out of action for 9 months? And after they had the child, what then? They bring it with them? Take your kid to work day? I imagine the consequences of such activities were made very clear to the S-IIIs at some point.

OT: I would seriously advise against googling "Supressed sex drive in Spartan-IIIs." I thought the Flood was scary...

Yes, no Spartan ever had the chance. Men can still have the luxury but the Woman on the other hand cannot carry a baby. Their skeleton was hardened to a point of no expansion, a baby wouldn't fit.

I don't remember ever hearing that, mind sourcing that? I don't ever remember reading anything like that. And if my knowledge of human anatomy and biology is correct and my memory serves me well, bones don't expand when women are pregnant, if you mean when they go into labor the bones still down expand. Again I could be wrong though 'cause I haven't really studied human anatomy/biology yet, so I don't the exact details and specifics of how the birthing process works in regards to the pelvis area and its bones.

I'm not anatomy expert either, but aren't the hip bones meant to be expanded during the birth to allow the baby to y'know, come out? xD

Not proven and that is only slightly hinted at by a composer, not a writer or anyone else with a similar job. So no, your correction is not right.

Marty may not be part of the writing process for the games, but if memory serves me properly he has done his fair share of crafting the story and details in the Halo Bible, he was one of the few at Bungie who had access to it while it still resided at Bungie headquarters, he can be trusted a source.

Because a relationship means you have a baby right?

So every time people get a boyfriend/girlfriend, a baby is involved?

Just saying...

:/ Dont' know :P I don't think they expand, unless I'm totally missing the meaning here haha (that has happened to me before). They might hinge a bit or something, if that's what you mean by expand, but like I said, I haven't really studied the matter, so I don't really know. I could easily be quite wrong in my assumptions. And I've never been pregnant either so I lack that specific knowledge as well XD

Bungie blanked out the part where it said (s)exual relationships.

Mhm, that too. Actually I think it was three other guys besides Marty, but yeah, they corrected what was wrong and needed correction. If Kat and Carter were not supposed to be romantically interested in each then the other guys would have corrected it.

Nevermind, wrong "term" the hips do widen to accommodate the baby as it grows through the pregnancy and thus, be able to give birth to it in a natural way. There may or not be problems for Spartan II's with their whole, unbreakable bones thing, so perhaps Maria had to adopt instead of actually give birth to a baby.

  • 05.01.2011 8:22 PM PDT

There already exists a wide variety of reproductive technologies for people who for whatever reason can't conceive, presumably the future will only increase this number.

Yes, but there can't be no pregnancy if the fetus can't develop, the hips widen to accommodate the baby as it grows, if the Spartan augmentations don't let the bones morph/adapt to the change, then the fetus won't be able to grow and an abortion will be made.

Surrogates? Cloning? Exo-utero or synthetic womb development?

The discussion is about female Spartans getting pregnant, all those methods involve a third party.

  • 05.01.2011 8:32 PM PDT

It's most likely possible for a female Spartan to get pregant, as far as we know the augmentation dosen't render them infertile or sterile. The real issue is whether they could carry a child to term, which seems unlikely given their augmentation., so I've suggested ways they could preserve and grow an embryo outside of the mother.

But would virtually unbreakable bones actually change that? I was under the impression that the hips were merely pushed open wider slightly to accommodate the growth of the baby and the swelling of the uterus.

  • 05.01.2011 8:43 PM PDT

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Perhaps, but the matter is, would the augmentation let the hips be moved? I mean, they have metal inside of their bones. It might as well be possible, but I don't see a Spartan pregnancy not getting any complications.

Okay then, show me PROOF they weren't in a relationship.

I believe there has been proof to say there were. Didn't one of the main guys in Reach's development say they were the only survivors of the original Noble Team, and thus were closer then any normal Spartan?

Carter carries Kat's body to evac. Carter is hit the WORST by her death, his tone of voice is completely different then normal.

I'm sorry, but you haven't shown anything to disprove it.

fun fact: all of that is conjecture, none of it is hard proof. the only proof that could be presented is some writer for the game series saying they were. otherwise we can assume they aren't, because Spartans just didn't think about that kind of thing.
