Subject: IS halo based on starship troopers

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit

this is just a thought which came to mind when i was watching starship troopers 2 where the Humans mobile infantry (whos uniforms bear a striking resemblance to UNSC ones) are fighting a seemingly unstobbable foe the bugs. but later in the movie its revealed that there is a new type of bug which uses humans as a host in a manner similar to the flood? any thoughts on this?

Nemo Me Impune Lacessit

before anyone says anything about it being the othere way about heres something from wiki Starship Troopers is a military science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein, first published (in abridged form) as a serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction (October, November 1959, as "Starship Soldier") and published hardcover in December, 1959.

Honor est praemium virtutis.

Bungie probably drew inspiration from a myriad of sources when they begun the concept of Halo, but it's not at all based off Starship Troopers.
Overall, it's a classic sci-fi storyline to have humanity up against a seemingly impossible to defeat foe.

Am I supposed to write something funny here?

I think it has more in common with Aliens.

Aliens was heavily influenced by Starship Stoopers

For the most part, yes.

It's Larry Niven's Ringworld (a giant ring structure in space built by a long dead ancient race) mixed with Starship Troopers(Military led by and ominous and oppressive government heads out to fight a war against aliens). Throw in a little religious sub text (forget Starship Troopers 3, I mean the book) and BAM-you've got Halo.

Walk softly, and carry a big midget.

I think the Marines are based on the marines from Aliens, and the ODSTs are based on the Mobile Infantry.

  • 05.02.2011 9:11 AM PDT

so few people had read the book, which is a shame to be honest!

Yes I'm fairly young. No, that doesn't mean I'm automatically dumber than you or have less life experience, thats just generally the case. I am not your general case.

I apologise for my ignorance. Is it a good read?

Head Down/ Chin Up!

Ever seen the movie Soldier starring Kurt Russell?

So much there that could be used for the Spartan program!

Universal Soldier also would provide alot of material on the spartan program.

Actually yes. Yes it is. If I remember correctly (it's been awhile since I read the book) it differs greatly from the movies. I suggest finding it and giving it a read.

Yes, but not the movie SST; rather it was the book SST's, not that satire film that happens to share the name.

In fact any setting that has powered armour and planet cracking nukes(book had nova bombs long before halo.) owes at least a little to that book.

Nigh unstoppable aliens on the other hand, I will suggest you look up HG Wells. ;)

I thought it was awesome. I thought the way it portrayed the borderline fascist government was a really good satire of our current government. And even today, the effects are incredible. It was a bit cheesy, but I think it was supposed to be. I loved it... the first one that is. the second one was garbage. I haven't even wasted my time on the 3rd.

  • 05.03.2011 11:05 AM PDT

the first movie is rather decent, the second and third are terrible though!

  • 05.03.2011 11:46 AM PDT

Will do! Johnson must be based a lot on Apone though shirley? "I want combat city!"

Once a Mythic, always a Mythic. '04 or Bust.
Extr3me Escalator Diving

The 2nd movie is terrible, but the 3rd isn't too bad. The first is, as always, a good watch.
