Why does account deletion being off matter at all?
Did this thread really merit a bump, particularly if you cannot see the logic in creating it in the first place?

In answer to your question account deletion does concern some people. Questions pop up about it from time to time and giving the standard "wait 1 year" answer appeared outdated so it was a question worth asking, even if it did stem from general curiosity. There may also have been an interesting reason behind the change, but Achronos has already said he isn't going to elaborate.

So, let me get this straight... Does that mean there is now no way at all for a user to delete their own account?

That doesn't seem right. It was bad enough before that a person had to wait a year as a work-around, but this is ridiculous.
Why is that an issue? If you don't want your account anymore, then why would you be concerned with whether or not it gets deleted? From my perspective, if someone is deleting their account, they're probably leaving B.net entirely, so it shouldn't be a concern whether or not their account at a site they will no longer visit is deleted.

What am I missing?

If I want to want to walk away from this site, I should be able to disociate myself from this account entirely. Currently, that is impossible, because this account is linked to my personal Windows Live ID, gamertag, etc.

I guess this is the part I get hung up on. If you're walking away from B.net, why do you care about this account's fate?

I don't care about this account. I care about my personal information that's attached to it.

Well now I'm just confused. The only personal info that I can think of being attached to my B.net account is done so either through my GT or my WLID, both of which are separate problems that wouldn't be solved by deleting my B.net account. So, again, what am I missing?

I don't understand why this is complicated...

My Bungie.net account is linked to both my gamertag and my Windows Live ID. Hypothetically, if I wished to leave this account for some reason, I would not want it to contiue to exist and be linked to my gamertag and Windows Live ID. Rather, I would want to delete my account and continue to use my existing gamertag and Windows Live ID with no strings attached.

Let me provide another example... Imagine you are a member of some club where you receive an ID card that has your name, address, etc. on it. If you no longer wish to be a part of that club, should you be able to keep the ID card and do with it what you please? Or should it be kept by the club and tacked onto the bulletin board for all to see? You would have no need for it in the future, so the fate of the card is inconsequential... However, the information on it belongs to you and you may have some interest in where / how it is used or displayed.

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

Well, I thought there was a way to link your B.net account to a different WLID--which would also dissociate it from your GT and any related info--but I'm not seeing that in the options nor do I see a pinned/top topic for it, so maybe not.

I still don't see why you perceive your B.net account as such a liability. It's hardly analogous to an ID card with name, address, etc. on it since the B.net account itself has none of those data directly attached to it--like I said, that data is with your WLID and GT and is a separate problem. Not so much arguing here as just explaining my POV.

To address your analogy, I think a better one would be that the club is keeping the card but locking it up in a vault and if you need it again, it's there, and if not no one is going to see it again because it stays in the vault. Of course, the vault could get broken into.

Agree to disagree, I suppose. :-)

Posted by: RighteousTyrantIt's not locked away as well as you might think.

You might not care that I and others can easily see what city you are in, but there are others who might be a little more concerned.

On the topic of "breaking in", though... You've just brought up another point. Considering the highly-publicised troubles Sony has been having lately, surely you can see the importance of having some control over where and how your personal information is kept.

And you know what? Perhaps I could create some dummy Windows Live ID and re-link this account to that in order to sever my ties... Should I need to do that, though? Should I be forced to hand my ID card to someone else when I quit the club, just so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands? Or should I instead be given the option to just shred it if I want?

You're right, I don't particularly care that the world can see that "RighteousTyrant" lives in a city of over a million people. Good luck finding me based just on that.

And if I did care, I could easily erase that info from my GT without having to delete any account.

On the topic of "breaking in", though... You've just brought up another point. Considering the highly-publicised troubles Sony has been having lately, surely you can see the importance of having some control over where and how your personal information is kept.Certainly. I also see that none of it is tied directly to my B.net account, and that deleting my B.net account would not prevent someone from hacking XBL or the WLID system and getting that info.

And you know what? Perhaps I could create some dummy Windows Live ID and re-link this account to that in order to sever my ties... Should I need to do that, though? Should I be forced to hand my ID card to someone else when I quit the club, just so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands? Or should I instead be given the option to just shred it if I want?Definitely. I'm just confused as to why you'd want to shred the card that only has a fake name and maybe your location (B.net account) whist keeping the other cards that potentially have personally identifiable information and credit card numbers (WLID/GT).

My point is... There is the possibility that I (or someone else) may want to discontinue my use of Bungie.net, but continue using the Windows Live ID and gamertag that are associated to it.

The goal is to not remove all my personal information information from everywhere it exists on the planet.... Just from the places where it no longer needs to be, because I no longer use those services.

I was young, I was surviving the times. Waiting for my moment I was destined to shine. And I seized it!

I just want to add to the above:

Currently my gamertag is linked to an account that I frequented every day for the past 4 years, up until about 3 months ago. Then I decided that I no longer want to be associated with my posts on that account.

Why? I'm self-conscious about my gaming "identity". I prefer keeping it quite separate from my "real" life. It might not be a big concern to most people but if some of my friends found out how frequent of a forum-goer I was, it would be bad. That's just how I am. I'm hypocritical about gaming, thinking its a huge waste of my time, but I do it anyway, and frequent this site anyway, because it has become an aspect of my life.

In summary, I prefer anonymity, and as long as my other account exists, my friends can do a simply google search and find 10 000 posts that I would rather have them not see.

Just my two cents on account deletion.
