Copy and paste, with updated graphics.
I, for one, wouldn't be willing to pay more than $5 for a game I already own...with just prettier visuals.
I'm unsure about how many CE fans would be willing to shell out money for something that can easily be accomplished via PC mods.
I'd like to see enhanced graphics, online play, PC version features (Fuel Rod gun, Flamethrower, those extra maps) Firefight, Forge, Theater, Online Co-Op, Visualized bloom without changing how the weapons actually work, and the newer visual designs of the Covenant from Reach. They could add all of those without altering the gameplay much.
See, those are changes I wouldn't mind. Make it something of a "directors cut". Why in the world people want to turn it into Reach or the terrible Halo 3 is beyond me.
Reflecting back on my post made me realize that, even if those things are implemented, many newcomers will simply see it as a "gimped" version of Reach.
Let me explain that real quick. They would see all those features from Reach implemented into CE, and CE's gameplay would remain unchanged...but in order for it to remain unchanged certain things must be excluded completely, boarding, boost on vehicles, vehicle damage, armor abilities, loadouts, assassinations, various ranks and species of the Covenant, and various weapons. To most players, they'll just see Reach minus all those things, with a different campaign and gameplay tweaks.
Sure, many players prefer CE's gameplay to Reach's, but I'm willing to bet that most casual gamers will hear that Halo HD has less weapons, enemies and features than Reach and will just pan it right then and there.
Essentially, the remake has to implement enough features to warrant a repurchase, but not so many that it's only relation to the original is the path the story goes...it's gonna be tough for 343 to pull this off...
True enough, but I think that's where having a target audience and pricing your game accordingly comes into play. If they are going to do this as a full $59 title, then your right, it is going to have to have enough done to it to draw new buyers, even though it will risk upsetting those looking for an HD rerelease.
