As we all know Halo array is meant to destroy all life in the whole galaxy. To reach every part of the galaxy Halos should have been spread in a heptagonal formation or as there were eleven of them when they were constructed hendecagonal (11-gonal) formation.

Sorry, but there was actually 12.

Yes But the original 12 weren't going to be used to wipe out the galaxy and you guys are misunderstanding that.

The first 12 rings we made over 10,000 years as they had to develope the technology, do prototypes, etc.
They were going to be used as system super weapons, meaning any system/planet that was attacked or infested by flood a halo would be sent to clear the system. THATS how they were going to use the original 12 and what they were probably building more for.

But once mendicant bias went rougue that is what truly gave the flood an upper hand and what started the countdown on the forerunners clock. Knowing this they reconfigured the secound batch of rings to wipe out life in the galaxy instead of a system.

Which is why size is a main difference between the new and old rings. The old rings were also used as transports to the Ark which is why they were so much larger; The new rings were made only to to wipe out the galaxy, so size didn't matter as much as location.

And don't take Legends so literally, Even if that did happen the way cortana thought stellar drift knocks any questions out.

I disagree. The Charrum Hackor (I know I botched the spelling there) was a test-firing. The entire Array was built to destroy all life in the Galaxy if necesarry- however, they tried to avoid that fate by sending Mendicant with only one to see if he could wipe out the Flood where it hurt most.

If Mendicant failed or if it hadn't been enough... then they had the rest of the Array with which they could wipe out the Galaxy. But as we find out, political strife changes these plans as well as the re-arrival of our beloved Mendicant.

I also believe the only reason the newer rings are smaller is because they were produced directly from the Ark, which I do not believe the older Halo rings were.

A better question though is how did they, meaning Miranda and Johnson, get back with their ship, In Amber Clad? They must have hijacked a ship with the rest of the survivors of Delta Halo. That solves what they got back on and why it was so quick.

If I had to guess, they rode with the Arbiter in a Covenant ship of some sort. Rtas Vadum probably stayed behind to help clean up as best he could at High Charity (which as we know, failed utterly) while the Arbiter took an advance force and all surviving humans to Earth.

I agree to disagree. At lest this is what I understood from reading the Cryptum. Did I miss/misunderstand some part? I also didn't remember there were 12 of them originally.

Whatever it is, it doesn't change the fact that Alpha and Delta Halo seem to be too close to each other or that Covenant ships are incredibly fast. We know that there are only seven rings left.

I don't know who grey was talking to but I don't take most parts of Legends literally. That would mess up the whole placement as all the rings would be inside probably 10000 light-year radius.

You need to read that chapter again. Didact speaks of the rings being used to wipe out life in entire systems the idea of using them to wipe out the galaxy hasn't came up yet because the forerunners are still decently fighting the flood. It has just now became their final hour in which the idea to use halo like that will come up at the last ten minutes.

That isn't what medicant bias was built/reprogrammed to do, he was to study the flood for a weakness and then help the forerunners use that weakness to fight the flood.

I probably do- I usually get a more perfect grasp after a second read-through, but I just haven't had time.

However, Mendicant WAS given a Halo... I'm foggy on this, but was it the Master Builder that secretly sent it with him or what? After all, it'd be a bit... questionable... to send your A.I. with a Halo if it's only going to research and find a weakness in the Flood.

Him having a halo wasn't a secret his name serial number is 05-032.

So after reading cryptum we assume that he was in charge of installation 5 the ring in halo 2 that also held the gravemind and flood that were still active post halo array.
This ties in with him taking the prisoner (which will be the gravemind) and all sorts of other gasmic relations.

I really need to reread Cryptum now. I don't remember even that serial number. But if gravemind was the prisoner, does it mean it's not a just product of final stages of Flood infection? What I mean is that if gravemind didn't contain the prisoner, would it be "dumber" as it wouldn't have the intelligence of a precursor?

Technically, they destroy all life 'Within three radieye of the galactic core'. Spark's words exactly (except with spelling erroersv.v). So... maybe they were closer to eachother AND the core?

But then they would have left a gap for the Flood to survive. The whole Milky Way was Flood infested.

@ Mutoid: I know it isn't exactly a canon breach. It just sounds more interesting and I put it there in lack of better words.

Thats what a few of use are thinking, that the gravemind we know isn't a true natural gravemind, just an infected precursor.

The Proto graveminds in halo wars, halo CE, and "the mona lisa" are much different than the final product especially the one in mona lisa. I understand that larva don't always look like the adult, but the mona lisa really opened my eyes to this idea.

Ships travel at the speed of plot.

Though for a more serious answer it would be ridiculous to assume that every Human ship travelled at the exact same slipspace velocity, especially with speeds like that. (And the exact same goes for the Covenant).

This is what happens when you take one situation and try to apply it everywhere. This 2 light years per day stuff is coming from a Prowler on route from Reach to Earth (If I remember this right). Does every ship have a Prowler drive? Does every ship supply the necessary power for its drive to operate at a certain "output"? Was the Prowler travelling at best speed? A Prowler escaping from the Battle of Reach...how do we know that it was not damaged and limping back to Earth at an appalling efficiency?

I believe slipspace drives always function at the same speed and every UNSC ship uses similar drives. If it was damaged, the ship couldn't jump into slipspace or at least it would be extremely dangerous to make a jump.

Now , given i am not that familiar with canon this might not be possible. But what if the halos, after firing, were programed to regroup at some forerunner installation to be dismantled so that future races could not use them by mistake. If they did not factor their tech being used they might have just left this travel be done by drifting, thinking that other races would not be able to advance fast enough to discover the rings

EDIT:They might not have figured their leftover tech because of the shield worlds, if they lived they would go and collect it

If it was damaged, the ship couldn't jump into slipspace or at least it would be extremely dangerous to make a jump.

There are other systems on a ship in addition to the slipspace core itself which can be damaged, impacting how long its journey could take. Losing power lines for instance would reduce the flow of power to the engines/slipspace core.

Damage can affect the ship's travel time negatively, as was the case with the Heracles returning from Harvest to Reach after Battle Group 4 was destroyed. Bottom of page 97 in TFOR.

It was mentioned as setting a speed record from Reach to Earth, and the cole protocol was not followed.

There's also Zeta Doradus being weeks away by the fastest UNSC ships.

Is the minimum transit time for Earth-Reach known though?

In either case I am probably wrong here anyway.

Because I was tired. I am sorry. I didn't explain it carefully and was totally wrong. As opogjijijp said it was the speed record (which I didn't know). But I do believe as ships may have different models of slipspace drives which creates slightly different speeds, they function the same way.

Thank you for pointing that out. I take my words back. I was only thinking the core and not systems around it.

I also came up with other thing which can affect the speed of a ship: slipspace weather as it is called. If I remember correctly, the Forerunner crystal for instance affected Pillar of Autumn's journey to or from Alpha Halo. All kinds of events can affect the speed of the ship. Negatively or positively.

The Forerunners did not fill the whole Milky Way Galaxy though, and the Flood was pretty much stopped in its tracks when it ran into the Forerunner, so they didn't get farther than the Orion Arm of the galaxy, which is where the Forerunners were, and thus consequently where the Halos were place, around the Orion Arm, not the whole Milky Way Galaxy.
