Subject: I have a Question about an Enemy I found in Marathon Durandal...

Hi, yesterday I bought Marathon Durandal for the Xbox Arcade and I'm playing through it for the first time. I have a question about one of the enemy's I've met frequently throughout the singleplayer.

It's this flying robed guy that shoots energy blasts at you, and I'm curious as to what the hell it is exactly. Whenever I shoot it, it's all staticy like a Hologram, but holograms shouldn't be able to damage me back, right? And he doesn't leave a body when he dies, which is kinda odd. This is my first Marathon so I don't know much of the backstory from the first game, and I was just wondering if anybody could tell me what exactly these guys are. Are they some sort of ghost? AI? What?

We were somewhere around Barstow...

Did you try this new fancy 'Google' website as of yet?

I figured that asking Universe Forum Eggheads would be much more fun and quick than binging it.

A walking contradiction.

That would be the Compilers of S'pht. Basically cyborgs. As per ArmourElite, Google will fill you in the rest. :)

What a waste....

Those guys are ANNOYING AS HELL! I'm stuck on this one part in Marathon where one drops out behind you and one in front, along with those Honor Guard-looking guys.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

They are the Sph't, an enslaved race of cybernetic beings. They are very integral part of the plot. It's understandable why you wouldn't know what they are, as Marathon 2 isn't nearly as self contained as freeverse wanted to believe.

In the first marathon, the plot was resolved when Durandal free a ship worth of them and then used that ship to leave the Marathon.

As for fighting them, a single grenade ore over charge with a Fusion pistol kills them on normal.

Also, you should totally download the first (and third) Marathon game for Aleph One. It's totally free since Bungie made the games' source code public, and there's a pinned thread in this forum explaining how to get the games. Durandal will also make more sense after playing Marathon One. (Although the same probably can't be said about Infinity.)
