Subject: Is the UNSC stupid?

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.

Earth had 300 orbital MAC stations protecting it.
Reach had 30.
And people are wondering why Reach fell?
What was the UNSC thinking?

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

300 was really pushing it to be honest.

I look at it like these plot points aren't made to show the weakness of the UNSC, rather the sheer superiority of the Covenant Fleet.

Looking for clan that isn't too serious? Then join the ODST 501st Airborne Battalion. Go to http://www.501st.forumclan.com for more info.

Well, Earth was much more important than Reach, and the simple fact that the UNSC thought that the covenant wasn't as close to reach as they thought. And most likely they put most of their attention towards their Spartans rather than their MAC stations.

Well after the fall of reach a huge amount of resources went into earths defences.

Guys, the UNSC isn't real. It was WRITTEN. It is FICTION. They can't be stupid because they don't exist. The numbers of MAC guns are a plot device by WRITERS.

These numbers are not meant to show the weakness of the UNSC, but instead the sheer power of the Covenant.

You do realise that your in the Universe forum, the place where people go to discuss the fictional story and plot elements from the WRITERS?

Don't go to a swimming pool and then complain when there's water.

I also find the number of MACS at Earth and Reach very strange. 300 at Earth.... fine. If I was in control of the UNSC I would have put more at Reach, because its.... you know.... important.

Because Spartans can stop thousands upon thousands of ships from glassing a planet from orbit. Even then the IIs were for the most part completed save for MJOLNIR, and the IIIs were relatively cost effective compared to the IIs. Space defense was the real key to a good defense for the UNSC. It's baffling that the UNSC never bothered to reinforce Reach with space defenses as the war went on against their favor, yet the second it falls they're able to muster up 300 functioning platforms over the course of a mere month.

Now yes the Covenant did bypass several colonies and unexpectedly showed up at Reach, but it's just strange that their fortress world didn't receive the same treatment as Earth prior to its fall particularly because of its strategic value as the largest shipyard in UNSC space. Something far more tangible and important towards the war effort than the symbolic nature of humanities' home planet. Unless of course there were far more strategic resources available at Earth that were left unsaid.

So stupid, in-fact, that they didn't use them during the fall of Reach.

Yep, after Reach fell, everyone was like "oh no!" and then started to build a lot more defenses for Earth.

After the Fall of Reach Earth began to activate Earth's MAC stations, which would take about a week.
We can assume that all of them were activated.
Also where did somebody get the idea that the Covie had 300,000 ships? If they did then we would have lost every battle.

ODPs are pretty damn expensive to build, I suppose.

I honestly don't think even 300 SMACs could have saved Reach. Even if it was a pyrrhic victory for the UNSC, the Covenant could pretty much launch a second attack against devastating UNSC forces, leaving Earth pretty much defenseless in the process.

50 (15 + atleast 30 and at most 40, so 35) Ships attacked Earth
Where the hell are you getting that from?

In fact, the numbers of the mac cannons are pretty definitive proof of Earth being attacked by hundreds upon hundreds of ships. The space battle lasted for weeks, remember?

And the total size of the Covenant navy is something like 3000, not hundreds of thousands.
