Could be for any number of reasons: Could be it's part of the power broadcast system, could be it's covered in thrusters to aim the gun, could be part of some kind of recoil dampening system.
I'm thinking it has to do with recoil dampening. If you think about it, if it just fired with no recoil, it would go flying back towards earth. It most likely has some mechanism that compensates for the recoil of the blast.
