Regardless of what the worst is, The Fall of Reach is best.

Agreed^ :)
For me, i'd like to think that Ghost of Onyx and First Strike fight it out for 2nd place.

Actually maybe Ghost of Onyx is 2nd with First Strike with a very close 3rd. The character development for Kurt in GoO is simply great writing by Nylund. I actually felt for him when the -blam!- hit the fan.

Honor est praemium virtutis.

1. The Fall of Reach - Everything about this book was epic. From the Spartan boot camp to the epic battles.
2. Ghosts of Onyx - Just an overall interesting novel.
3. Contact Harvest - Avery Johnson, 'nuff said.
4. First Strike - Bridged the gap between Halo CE and Halo 2, but apart from that wasnt overly exciting compared to the above choices.
5. The Flood - Was a nice read, but nothing special. Apart from the few bits we dont see in Halo CE, it felt a little pointless.

I still have the others to read, which I hope to get to soon once I finish some other novels I'm in the middle of.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Best: The Cole Protocol
Worst: The Flood

Honorable Mentions: Evolutions and, I guess, Cryptum.

Favorite stories in Evolution:
#1 Favorite: Mona Lisa
Dirt
HeadHunters
Stomping on the Heels of a Fuss

"Question. Which Spartan is best?"
"That's a ridiculous question."
"False. Master Chief."
"Well, that's debatable. There are basically two schools of thought."
"Spartans shoot Sangheili. Spartans. Sangheili.....Battle Star Galactica."

Picking my favorite Halo novels is like picking which child is your favorite. Sure, there's definitely one you like more than the other, but you still really love that other kid.

Here we go. From order of favorite to least favorite.

1. The Fall of Reach
2. Ghosts of Onyx
3. First Strike
4. Cryptum
5. The Flood
6. Contact Harvest
7. Cole Protocol

  • 05.06.2011 5:54 AM PDT

Best - Either Contact Harvest or Ghosts of Onyx
Worst - The Flood

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

You were totally and absolutely correct in every way, I don't know why we were arguing, you're so amazing I should never have doubted you.

Best: Halo Cryptum
Reason: Every chapter was a bombshell of information, and the book kept me hooked completely. I read it twice in the first week of owning it, and to date I've read it more than five times. The characters were intriguing, the setting was unique, and the overall writing was excellent.

Best Runner-Up: First Strike
Reason: Probably the most necessary book, as it linked the gap between Halo CE and Halo 2. It was also very interesting and introduced a lot of things that should've been expanded on (Forerunner crystal, Halsey's disappearance). Also, Whitcomb is a major bad ass.

Worst: The Cole Protocol
Reason: Very bland story, characters were overall quite uninteresting, the portrayal of the Sangheili drew far too heavily on futile Japan (yes, futile, not feudal), and it was mostly boring action instead of actual story.

Worst Runner-Up: Halo: Evolutions vol. I.
Reason: With the exception of Pariah and The Impossible Life and Possible Death of Preston J. Cole, the stories were very, very boring, and most didn't expand on the canon in any important way.

Sangheili Major: "Brute ships. Staggered line! Shipmaster, they outnumber us, three-to-one!"

Rtas 'Vadum: "Then it is an even fight. All Cruisers, fire at will! Burn their mongrel hides!"

I've only read Cryptum, the Cole Protocol, the beginning of the Flood and I'm halfway through the Fall of Reach.

So, as for now,
Best - Cryptum
It was just so good.

Worst - the Flood
Yes. I've read into the first...sixteen chapters and I can already say that I do not like it. I will read it, of course, but I don't like the writing style used, nor do I like the switching between characters within the same chapter.

It's too hard to pick a favorite :/ As, with the exception of The Flood (seems to be the common consensus that it's the worst one), they're all so good!

So yeah, I don't really have a favorite, but some of the ones I really liked a lot (and I guess you could call favorites) are Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, and the Cole Protocol.

Cryptum is of course good, but I'm withholding a real judgment on it until the other two books come out since it's a trilogy.

Worst is most definitely The Flood, it was just so boring, I mean the parts about the ODSTs or the Elites were somewhat interesting, but over all the whole book was rather dull.

Favorite short story in Evolutions I think would probably be either Cole's story, or Human Weakness.

Agreed. Even though the ODST sections were somewhat intriguing, it just wasn't enough to save The Flood from its innate dullness.

I don't want to join your group.

Favourite: Halo Evolutions because of the stories which added into the series.
Least favourite: The Flood because it is just like Halo CE, but with a little more detail. But still a decent book.

Not yet sadly. I have the book though, hopefully I can get around to it sometime soon.

Mhm, The Flood was definitely the worst Halo book, I was glad to get it over with. I loved Cole Protocol on the other hand, it seems that people either love or hate it, not much middle ground in regards to Cole Protocol I've found.

Indeed. Most people either love or hate The Cole Protocol. I tend to favor the middle ground. Not my favorite, Not my least favorite.

I actually liked The Flood.

Yayap is my hero.

Hey, I'm not here to judge.

To each his own!

You ever wonder why we're here?

I only have The Fall Of Reach and The Flood, but The Fall of Reach is a very awesome novel and I love it! I will read The Flood after I'm done TFoR but I'm not so excited about it anymore after hearing how it's one of the worst. :/
