You downloaded the game and decided you didnt like it in 9 minutes. wow.

The reason you probably haven't heard of any other Bungie games is because they are older. The game before Halo (Myth 2) came out all the way back in 1997(i think)

  • 08.29.2004 6:02 PM PDT

Oni was the game before Halo. It came out in early 2001. Myth 2 came out in 1998. Myth: The Fallen Lords came out in 1997. Marathon came out in 1994 (almost ten years ago to the day!). Marathon 2 came out in 1995. Infinity came out in 1996.

Oh, and by the way, emptyevergreen is WRONG. And thanks for that, Steve, that post really made my day! :)

i only have a few complaints when it comes to this subject. first, i am voicing my own opinion, second, insulting my intelligence is irrelevent and is a low blow that shouldn't be someones last means of trying to prove there point (actually, it usually only proves there lack of intelligence) and lastly you cant possible even try to deny that halo, although bungies most recent game made, was also bungies most successful game.

successful? Sure. Halo is by far the most successful bungie game. However, the topic, as you wrote it and as you discussed it is: halo is the only good game bungie has ever made.

We disagree. Bungie has made some great games. Myth was (and in my opinion still is) the most innovative RTS of it's time. No other game comes close to it is terms of REAL strategy (and not - "I can make more farms then you in the 1st 10 minutes of the game" but true strategy). It used wind, landscape and weather to control the balance of the game. Unit position and facing made a huge difference to the gameplay.

Oni was rushed - but It had many features that make it stand out. It also splits the fanbase as some like it while others don't. The merits and failings of oni have been discussed at length, but I won't go into it here.

Pathways into darkness was a early FPS that dared to have a story - and multiple endings. It proved that gamers were interested in plot, characters and thinking about how to deal with a situation as much as they were about monsters, guns and gameplay.

Marathon has the most solid story of all time in any game. Seriously. It also has great ambiance and feeling. For it's time it was also innovative, cutting edge technology: it ran at a higher resolution, had more colours and the ability to look up and down. It had multiplayer game types before unreal tournament and quake 3 were even on a game designer's drawing board.

I could go on and on about why bungie's other games rule - but I'll leave it there. Remember that bungie has only gotten to where they are off the susccess of their previous games - you can't walk into the game industry with no reputation. Halo's success is leveraged off the success of the games that have come before. Also remember that the some of the games you are bagging out have been around for more then 10 years - they can't compare in some respects to halo as they are no longer the state of the art. That does not mean that they are not damm fine games in there time, or even now. Many decerning gamers judge games not just by pretty graphics and cut-scenes - but by story, game play, imersiveness and quality design. As such bungie's older games stand testament to how great they are.

The other problem is the way you have argued your case - you have not backed up any statements with fact, or even solid discussion points or thought. You have not shown that you have played any of bungie's other games except marathon 2 (for a very short time) - and even then you don't explain what you don't like, instead you just bag it out. People respond more positively to structured arguments then flaming.

If you are new in town and walk into a biker bar and bag out the choice of bikes parked out the front - expect some of the long time bar members to get a bit annoyed... It's the same here. I'm not excusing the reaction that the forum dwellers gave but rather am giving you an idea why you got the reaction you did.

Now you see why where we are coming from?

EDIT: blargh! typos. That's another thing - try to use spelling and grammar if you can - it's more forum friendly. Even if it means editing your posts if you suck at typing like me :-)

^What he said.

I like how you described Myth....the whole "It's not 'I can build 10 farms faster than you'" bit was brilliant.

Myth was/is one of the most customizable games out there. You can change ANYTHING you want. You could make your own menu, maps, units, gametypes, whatever. You could make archers shoot flaming chickens. You could double the amount of enemies on a level for a challenge. Ever wondered what it looked like if an army of Civil War soldiers would stand up against an onslaught of undead creatures? There's modifications out there that led you do it. This added YEARS to replayability and was truely under rated.

Sure, it's the most successful to date... but that doesn't make it the best.

People here are insulting you because, for all intents and purposes, you have made an illegal thread... you are not allowed to come on and say "This sucks, all you people who play this need to get lives and girlfriends and stuff" and I don't know why the mods haven't locked this... perhaps it is because we are NOT flaming you, because unlike a large percentage of the Halo community, we can and do settle things without swearing or threatening... that is reserved for the most idiotic and determined of posters (ie Davester88, mustafabqal and ropie). Lucky you aren't in that category, there is hope for you yet... and besides, to a large extent, these guys are just having a joke because we really can't take you seriously with a post like this!

Marathon was a huge innovation for its time, we got the ability to look up and down for starters...meanwhile id never managed that till Quake *shudder*. We had dual weilding shotties....lots of fun :) We also had to think which was a huge innovation, partically for those in the brain dead community out there who can't play anything unless its simple follow the line and shoot things. To have some utter nonce say it sucked because he's comparing a game which is probably many years older than he is, to games out today by the only benchmark he can, its graphics than he is a fool for believing his own mindless ramblings.

A good game isn't made by its graphics, they are actually low down in the list of things which contribute to what makes a game good. You need gameplay, and the ability to free move, think, and actually for once use your old grey matter between your ears. You also need a good story, and this is something again Bungie has never let us down with. Sound then contributes to what makes a game by it adding emotion, feeling and another depth to what you're experiencing. Then maybe graphics, if it looks pretty fair enough, but its not the be all and end all.

And you're complaining about Myth, which is not only still amazing, it created its own genre of an RTT. The graphics, the weather, the game play, the strategy was amazing and something totally groundbraking and out of this world, partically for the time and the speed of the machines we were using back then. I still play Myth occassionly, and its as amazing now as it was when I originally played it.

Pathways hmm, I dunno, interface wise it was kinda clunky but it was still great fun though...I sadly missed on Minotaur so I can't comment.

Couldn't have said it better I copyed it and saved it on my desk. Even though I have not nearly as much experience of Marathon and Myth series as most of you guys I really respect the games of what they are and I'll give it another try some time and I argue that I like Halo better and it's much better than start a flame war especially against an army of Marathon/Myth fans.

  • 08.30.2004 1:54 PM PDT

The War will wage forever; though with it's fury comes a peace that you will never know here.

That's a matter of opinion. You, rather, appear to be stating a fact.

...which implies that you believe that your opinion is objective, rather than subjective. Opinions are not objective. If so, this whole planet would be messed up.

And ForceMorph, please refrain from calling people 'fools'. It goes against the Code of Conduct, and it's rude.

Members who have been here a while (around 10 months) will also remember the word 'fool' all too well. They know what I'm talking about. I'm not giving any names.

@emptyevergreen:
Ok kid, you have the right to an opinion, no argument there. But just because you have an opinion doesn’t mean that I have to respect it, especially if you present your opinions has facts without backing them up with any kind of proof. I’m not advocating flaming or anything, but I’ll tell you right now, if you just show up totally out of the blue, knocking every Bungie game prior to Halo, I’m going to argue with you until one of us is beaten and bloody.

You got what you deserved.

(Oh, yeah: “I hate coming in late to a good heretic roasting. All well, I guess I can still warm myself over the ashes…” )

Edit – it never ceases to amaze me how many times I can read over something without seeing some stupid typo I made.

this whole thing started when i was unhappy with the end of the countdown to ilovebees. i came here to blow off some steam and accidentally struck quite a nerve with some people...people that wen as far as sending me private messages to tell my i was stupid or an idiot or whatever they were trying to prove. i have nothing against bungie games i have just been joking around. i cant honeslty play marathon and judge it accordingly because it is ten years old. i like halo becaue i am a big fps fan.in all honesty it is my favorite game of all time. bungies games that occupy other genres dont appeal to me because try as i may i cant play rts or games of that type. bungie is innovative and a bunch of great guys

Who here wants to take some turns at Weekend Warrior?

Are you speaking of the HGTV series? Looking for someone to re-tile your bathroom Shishka?

Or did you have some other type of Weekend Warrior in mind?

I believe he reffers to the game Weekend Warrior. It was, I believe, one of the first games produced by Pangea, another excellent Mac game company. Weekend Warrior was, and still is, one of the best 3D platformer games out there.

Pangea, for those that are interested, is also the company to produce such games as Bugdom, Nanosaur, Enigmo and Billy Frontier. All excellent, all Mac.

Developed by Pangea, published by Bungie.

Well then that just defeats the point of all of your arguments about rites and that toher guy who was trying to protect you... if you came to "blow off steam" by getting people pissed then thats against the rules... its a deliberate spamming/flaming attempt ;)

So all I can say is, this thread has been amusing to say the least, but quite pointless :P

But I will continue the discussion anyway!

emptyevergreen, I think you meant to sign your own death warrant. I myself have never played any other game besides Halo made by Bungie (sorry guys) but even I know, after less than a week of these boards, you do not say something openly like "Halo is the only good game Bungie has made" to the Community. It's childish and can only lead to a flaming.

I.... um....did. Oh God I'm ashamed to say this. I have a good sense of programming, have studied a computer and its software for most of my life, and have gone the extra mile of making my own computer. But I actually screamed at my monitor when I tried installing the game. I couldn't figure out HOW IT INSTALLED! It was victorious against my long temper. DAMN YOU MARATHON! LoL, I also damn Microsoft for making the installation of games way too easy. I've rarely installed games such as Marathon's format in my lifetime and have just forgotten its cryptic method of doing so. Also, the readme the game came with wasn't too helpful either.... Oh, the shame....
