343 Guilty Spark claims that Installation 04 II will be ready to fire in a few more days. Could Johnson, Chief, and the Arbiter have waited?
The best case scenario:

They return to Forward Unto Dawn and call for additional support to blockade the installation, and 343 GS prevents the Gravemind from using Halos teleportation grid.

Faster is always better. As destruction of Installation 04 (II) didn't lead to any human casualties and even Johnson's death was unexpectable. It was just best to fire the ring immediately.

If they waited to fire a few more days, they wouldn't have been able to leave the control room. The flood may have found another way in as well.

Don't think it's teleport grid was build yet, no clue about that though.

We are all going to get banned aren't we?

In all honesty i think they could have waited a few more days.

The flood woulnd't have been able to break through that door, the gravemind was too weak to do anything.

The only thing they would have had to worry about was the flood getting smart and just waiting for them on the FoD.

I'm gonna agree with this.

There was likely no more Biomass on the Ring that could have made the gravemind stronger. it was a stalemate.

Plus, I can't see the Flood surviving very long in the snow. One might argue that the artificial weather systems were built to combat the Flood instead of being pretty aesthetics.

This. I remember there being a huge hole in the roof of the Control Room.

That was fo halo to fire, and that is like sticking your finger in a gun hoping somebody won't pull the trigger

Let's be honest, it could be a lot worse.

If they didn't blow the whole intallation up you wouldn't of had the bad ass driving scene though. Although realisticly they could have.

I know what it is for, and I'm sure the Flood would have found it before a few days passed by...

smart, interesting, seems out of place.

Official fan of Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, (Problem with that?) Halo, and Bungie, also a total gaming junkie.

Then Halo would funtion correctly and they would die.

I honestly think they could have waited, 343 and the sentinals could have kept the flood away from the control room and there is still a gap in between activation and firing. There still would have been a driving part just without things blowing up. However Forward Unto Dawn would have been the only reason, if they had taken over the Dawn they could have escaped or used the Dawn to break in but if they had left it in orbit and locked it up I'm pretty sure it would have been fine.

I disagree. The flood would have attempted to escape 04 somehow and slip-space away.

What would have happened if the Flood got onto Forward Unto Dawn, and managed to get back to Earth? Too many unknowns to delay firing the weapon.

Plus, why would they? The only reason to do so would be if they wanted to protect either the Ark or Halo, which wasn't a priority.

RED BRICK STUDIOS!

Waiting a few more days would most likely end badly.
The first, and most predicable scenario, is that the flood is able to surround the control room. With the teleportation grid most likely inactive, Chief, Arby and Johnson would never make it out.

Second, Forerunner structures are tough, but they aren't invincible. The Flood could amass enough firepower to punch through that door.

Third, it wouldn't be hard for the Flood to board the Dawn. It's pretty surprising they didn't before its takeoff.

Waiting would have gave the gravemind enough time to rebuild itself on the ring or the ark or try to take over the FoD or an elite ship then jump to a colony or earth.

Judging by the way the flood were hulk smashing through the doors on Alpha Halo if the Chief, Arbiter and Johnson barracaded themselves in the control room the flood would have eventually broke through.

It makes it less reckless and less entertaining. I played the campaign to finish the fight, not wait in the control room for a few days.

Then Halo would funtion correctly and they would die.

It would have only fired within the Portal of the Ark. It wasnt linked to the other Halo installations.

Now there's something I've never considered. Seems pretty damn logical.

cortana tells john at he end of 3 that "halo did a number on the ark"... she doesn't outright say that the ark was destroyed. i tend to think that if the digital/mechanical minions of the forerunners were able to build an installation 4 2.0 then they would have sufficient means of doing makeshift repairs to the slipspace/portal system to find more resources to do a complete restore and refit of the ark itself...

the end of the forerunner legacy? were it so easy...

  • 05.06.2011 8:41 PM PDT

I never said the Ark was destroyed, I simply said they didn't care if it was.
