Ive always wondered how, as the rupture should of killed everything in the city according to Halo 2. On another note, how did all those trees in uplift reserve survive the rupture?

Bungie retconned how much damage was done. The rupture was still destructive but it wasn't the sphere of kill everything that was shown in Halo 2.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake.
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
And the Science gets done.
And you make a neat gun.
For the people who are still alive.

But how did the marines survive?

I really don't have much knowledge on this subject, but it could've been for the story.

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Because they're Marines. Hoorah! lol.

Good question. Maybe that blue sphere wasn't anything destructive just an effect for the slipspace travelling, but then I think I remember vehicles being knocked around in the cutscene....

Speaking of chuckles, let's all lol at IonicPaul, who makes friends with bugs to make up for his lack of human contact.

They changed course (because of Dare's alternate objective), thereby making them hit the blast at an oblique angle, allowing the ODST's in Buck's squad to survive.

Edit: If you meant the non ODST marines in the city, they got lucky. Seems like most people died from the slipspace rupture. The ones you meet are the lucky ones.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

The marines on the ground? Maybe they took cover in a building or something to that effect?

In Halo 2 it seems to be a big ball of death (as previously stated), which even flew trucks into the air.

In ODST I think it is depicted as just an EMP. I think.

Well, I'll throw my opinion in here too I guess...

That slipspace rupture seemed like nothing more than a really strong wind blast (and a really freakin bright light as well)...not the giant death ball that was depicted in Halo 2.

With that being said, if the marines were by/in some buildings (or any other area with a decent amount of cover) that should of been enough to cover them from the rupture. As for the ODST's that were dropping in, they weren't so lucky...
