1. disable onboard 3D graphics
2. turn off comp.
3. install graphics card
4. run disk with drivers etc.
how would i go about doing step 1 on a dell 2400 running windows xp home edition? i know how to do about everything else. tips/pointers are welcome.

hmm... when you start up the computer if memory serves, then you see a dell logo and at the bottom or top or somewhere, it says press some button to enter setup. while the logo is up, press that button a bunch, and itll bring the bios setup. i havent used dells much but somewhere in there (dont mess around with these settings... some can mess things up if you change em) there usually is a setting to enable/disable onboard sound. seeing as i dont usually work with dells this is about all i can tell you but its a start. i think you can figure it out from there if you try

Find the manual for your computer(thats the thing that everyone ignores when they get the computer) and read how to enter the BIOS/Setup when you start the comp and how to disable the setting. If you threw the manual away or can't find it go to www.dell.com and search for the manual for that model.

Hmm, I'm sure there is more stuff in your BIOS than that.. check the other menus as well... Should be something like "Onboard Graphics Chip ----- enabled" Disable to turn it off (duuh :p)

It could be the last two, or one of them, but i'm not sure about that. See what happens if you turn them off (you can always go back in th BIOS in case something goes wrong, just make sure you remember the original setting)

ok thru the bios it looks like you cant disable it... kinda stupid. just put the primary graphics adapter on auto and NOT on onboard, and make the vid buffer 1 mb prolly so it doesnt use your ram for useless things. yes. disable it in device manager.
