1999, where Bungie origonally intended Halo to be a strategy game and belong to the MAC. But Microsoft bought Bungie and they turned Halo into a first person shooter for the Xbox.

I thought it started 1998, maybe as early as 1997?

Jason jones started Halo after Myth:TFL I thought. And Myth 2 came out 1998 (and took 11 months to make iirc).

edit: also, mac world 1999 was when Halo was first revealed. Shortly after e3 2000 (when halo started to look a lot more like it does now), M$ bought out Bungie. and Nov 2001 it came out.

(DL the e32k trailer off halo.bungie.org for an interesting old vid of Halo)

The concept and story probably started as early as 1997, but actual production couldn’t have started earlier than 1998, because Halo originally ran on a modified Myth II engine. That said, Halo was officially announced in 1999, and showed at E3 and the Mac World expo.

I just found an old gamemagazine it says:
There is only one mission but it is very big indeed... Your mission is to destroy a whole alien species that tries to destroy your planet... The multiplayer part will be like a whole world like in Ultima Online but only faster and better...

That was just a little part... But they also said that there would be a wether so smoke would follow the wind and tire tracks would disappear when rain comes...
