So, it's come to light that apparently one of two things is happening:

1) Either Microsoft Word cannot count/ Bungie.net can't count

or

2) The supposed 500 characters maximum is actually not entirely true...

See, i made a signature, got it down to 500 characters (including spaces) (counted in Word) and pasted it into the signature box, press save changes and behold! the 500 characters only message! "and there was much rejoicing" [/slight sarcasm].

Now, i'm sure this has been discovered before...infact i've probably replied in a similar thread, but the point is now, is something to be done with this? and why is this so?

There is a reason I am user ID 1 and my account creation date is before this site came online.

Is your sig more then 10 lines long? I know it has restrictions on that.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

My sig just barely fits.

Im shure this isnt 500 characters.

There is a conflict between the two, make sure you have Word set up to count spaces as well, then add about 20 to the number. Word also sometimes misses some punctuation in the count.

I'm guessing Word misses out on [ ]'s, ://'s and other forms of stuff.

Actually I made mine in Word, counted it in Word, and it read over 500 characters. I put it in... and it worked. :/

500 is enough. People hardly even look at other peoples sigs since everyone's links go to that one annoying site. I've only used like 30 characters in mine.

OK, no it's not 10 lines thing. If it was, i'd have an awsome "10 lines only" message aswell.

However, i think you're right by concluding about punctuation. It's probably that. Perhaps this should be changed? Oh, and yes my Word is set-up to include spaces.

  • 01.27.2006 5:40 AM PDT

Instead of using word, you should go to create a post and paste in your signature. You can then see how many characters Bungie.net is saying you have used up (the chars left: should not go below 9500 for it to fit into your signature). The thing is, a carriage return equals 2 characters in Bungie.net, so that might be a problem.

So, I just put one space in my post, but it equaled 4 characters used.

Bungie.net says I used 550 characters in this post, Word says it is 542 (including spaces). This makes sense, since I have 4 carriage returns.

Edit: By the way, when I say "create a post", I don't actually mean to hit "Submit". Just type it in to see if you go over your limit. This is also helpful because you can preview your post to see how your signature will look. DO NOT SUBMIT THAT POST!!!! By the way, this edit and the 2 carriage returns I had used to put it in are not part of the character count I listed above...

I understand perfectly.... I do really ;)

Thank you dmbfan09, rest assured i'm not too..uh...lacking in intelligence or hand-eye coordination to hit the submit button.

Perhaps is others wanted to do it this way, it would be more appropriate to get them to try it out in a post in a chapter/group (obviously they don't have to submit it). I just think that would be safer than doing it in a main forum.

I've got a question.

These lines in my sig don't seem to take up an entire line (according to the line counter).
Would that mean you could stick 100 of them in and take up 100 lines without it stopping you?

I'm not one for signatures, but I use Firefox, and the characters left thing doesn't go down for me, let alone even change. Firefox users should try a different method if this is true for all of them.

It easily could be. The URL's for the links in your sig have many characters. These characters are included in the count.

I don't think it has anything to do with which passport you're using. Some profiles have the glitch, most don't.
