Subject: Is Halo PC worth getting just for the multiplayer?

I already have Halo 1 via Games on Demand on XBL.
So, is it?

Well, it depends:

Pros:
Online Multiplayer
Great graphics (If you really know how to amp it up/have the right computer for it)
Custom Edition with amazing custom maps
Server Lists
More maps/weapons

Cons:
Halo PC's 56k compensated netcode

Only one con, but trust me, it's a big one. You're probably used to great/decent netcodes, but, this one changes the gameplay completely. You have to lead by feet instead of inches. It's something that will take a lot of getting used to, but, if you do get used to it, it is one of the greatest experiences you'll ever get out of the Halo franchise (In my opinion)

So, in the end, I'd say it is worth buying. It's not even that expensive at all, so, it's not like you'd be at much of a loss if you hated it.

As a side note: If you're into things taking skill, the netcode/Halo: Combat Evolved's already amazing mechanics make for the greatest skill gap in the entire Halo franchise. If you put an average player against a good player on Halo PC the good player will absolutely annihilate the average player non-stop.

I strongly suggest you get it.

Halo 1 PC is a very high quality (except the netcode) game for PC, and it being only 10 euro, it's a real bargain.

The graphics are far superior to halo xbox, that plus text chat, banshees in multiplayer, fuel rods, and 9 extra maps

Fan of halo? Get it, Period.

Another thing, if you do get it, I suggest you get Xfire as well. It's a great companion for most PC games. You can use it for a friend's list, video recorder (Not that great for it, but, it will do for non-professional stuff), screenshot taker, and voice chat. The voice chat has really become handy while playing CoD2/Quake Live with my girlfriend. It's easily just as good as on the Xbox.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

If you plan on using a controller, you're gonna wanna toss that out the window and get used to using a keyboard and mouse.

Could not agree more

In fact, for quite a while I was contemplating spending $143 for a XIM3 so I can play Reach with a KB/M before I decided to get a computer at a budget of $1,000. (As in I'd gladly put $1,000 into a PC than $143 on making my console experience better.)

eh... not a lot of action and top notch gameplay if that's what you're looking for. Most matches fly at a slow pace. But yeah, it's cheap and a classic. Buy it to try it out, and if you don't like it, then there isn't much to regret.

The pace is slow if it's a quiet server or full of players that don't know how to play.

In a game of players that know what they're doing, it's probably the fastest paced game in the series.

If you're playing with people that suck, yeah, they do. HPC turns into one of the most adrenaline-pumping games on the market if you're playing with people who are good, though.

It's rare that you can really get into a group of good players if you're entering the game now. All the good players are in locked servers constantly while the average/bad players are all in public servers.

It is 100 percent worth it. Halo PC blows the Xbox version out of the water. In addition to the regular online MP which the Xbox version lacked, you've got what is in my opinion one of the best modding communities in all of PC games. There's literally thousands of custom maps that have been made in Halo: Custom Edition (free download with a Halo PC keycode). Many of those maps also contain custom weapons and vehicles.

Dr Syx, you always give the honest answer. I appreciate it. Like me and most others, the public matches of which I described above, are the ones most commonly played...if he buys the game, those are the matches he'll most likely find himself in.

That makes one of you.

He is right though, but only because most of the good players have stopped playing. It's next to impossible to find a pub with good players in it these days, so I've pretty much stopped playing all but completely. KNFr still provides some fast-paced action, thanks to it being a flocking point for good players. It's also a flocking point for botters, though, so it's handy to run SJ while you're in there.

Back in the day, when you'd be hard-pressed to find a server full of noobs, every game was good. Ah, I miss those times.

Yeah, KNFr definitely has good players. It's the only place I go to now that I don't get top 4/5 times I play on it. (I'm not even a good player)

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

I never got into the clan scene. Pubbing was always fun enough, but I haven't played a decent pub game for probably over 2 years. The game is sort of dying finally. There are still quite a few people playing, but the servers are mostly bad, usually unlimited rockets. Very few servers make the pistol the priority anymore. For awhile the only servers were basically normal weapons on BG over and over again. Now it's even worse because they are mostly modded unlimited rockets on BG.

You should probably consider yourself lucky. Though making it into one of the best clans out there was definitely worth it for me, considering the skill bar needed to get in.

But yeah, that whole scene's dead now.

One other thing.
According to "Can You Run it?", my graphics card isn't good enough.
Yet I can run games like HL2 and Portal flawlessly. Is that test just inaccurate, or is Halo PC just higher quality?

  • 05.14.2011 8:19 AM PDT

Now day...wait...nvm i'm tired.

It's worth it IMO depending if you can stand leading your shots like previously said.

That's gotta be wrong. If you can run those two games, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to run Halo. What card do you have?

Mine's an 8600M GT, and it runs the game perfectly with all settings maxed out.

I have a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family card.
That might be a little to specific, I'm not that experienced hardware-wise.

  • 05.14.2011 11:18 AM PDT

Something smells fishy...

I say definitely get it. Even if for only the multiplayer experience.

Also it helps to have xfire so you can save servers that are generally active and have players who are skilled.

I have 3 to 4 "favorited" servers that are generally active.

I think it would be better if you had either an Nvidia or AMD graphics card.

The Human race is the parasite of the Earth. The galaxy is the host of the Earth. The universe is the parasite of something much grander...

yes, the original is great and co-op is the reason to have the xbox version but the PC is for the classic MP
