Probably you would do better with the Lightsaber since it's much lighter, but if both user were strong and good with they're weapons i'd give the win to the Energy Sword, both will slice trough anything but since the sword has actual material and weight instead of just light it would make more damage.

light sabers are laser, not plasma

Um, wrong. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber

The weapon consisted of a blade of pure plasma energy emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field.

So they are made of the exact same thing. Difference is sword is bigger and heavier.

Lightsaber. Energy swords just look like an accident waiting to happen with the plasma being so close to the hand.

My name is Legion, for we are many.

Energy sword, seeing as you get two blades to one. But all in all, it depends on the style and aptitude of the individual swordsman.

I don't think many people understand how a lightsaber works at all. Anyway straight to the point an energy sword would be useless against a jedi/sith. Why you say?

1st. a lightsabers design is unique, it can be designed for many various techniques, both defensive and offensive. An energy sword however has NO customization. It is designed for the sole purpose of powerful and often lethal strikes. However note the fact that this doesnt mean its made for duelling.

2nd. a jedi/sith despite having less strength than an elite wielding an energy sword, would more than likely make up for this defficency with speed, along with agility. You see those powerful sword strokes don't mean anything if you can quickly parry them/dodge them then counter attack.

*just imagine a claymore (greatsword) against a rapier, same basic principle, u got might vs speed, it doesnt take a genius to figure out whose going to win*

Bottom line: A lightsaber would destroy someone using an energy sword any day any time. Energy swords aren't made for duelling, its made to inflict fatal blows in a single strike. But if its blocked/countered by another skilled swordsmen wielding a lightsaber, its over.

TL,DR: slow, unwieldly, but powerful vs quick, agile and powerful. Try and guess who wins?

This except I'd go with lightsaber. :P Only because it is lighter then the Energy sword, nothing more then that really. I mean they're the exact same thing if you think about it.

Light saber.
1. Light sabers do not have a the awkward blade placement
2. Light sabers grips and weight placement can be customized to fit the user, we don't know if this is possible on energy swords as all we have seen are the variants that are mass produced.
3. Can "cut" (it's really the same principle as the E-sword[boiling or super-heating]) through any material where as we do not know the restrictions of the energy sword.

Yes, I'm the guy who had the Flood admit to being furries.

Depends on the fighting style of the two combatants, firstly.

You have more control over the lightsaber, the energy sword is wider and easier to hit with, but is always single handed. It's very limited in what you can do with it compared to the less bulky lightsaber.

You could get the lightsaber pinned between the two beams of the Energy Sword as a defensive measure, but that's about it.

It would be an even match if the two combatants used a fierce or offensive style, as the lightsaber is just much better at parrying.

Energy doesn't weigh anything, the hilt size is about the same. Weight wouldn't be noticeable different.

You can go double handed or single handed with the lightsaber, you can only go with one hand with the energy sword. There's much more flexibility with the lightsaber.

Chances of getting the lightsaber blade between the prongs of an energy sword is massively slim to none. Then the fact once you do that they have a straight shot to slice the hilt, your hand, and arm in half.

hmmmm....hard to decide. Lightsaber seems to have more swift movements, but with the energy sword you can lunge from a distance.

In realism, the lunge is simply the wielder, not part of the weapon.

He means the grip, not duel-wielding.

With a lightsaber both hands can be on the hilt, allowing heavier strikes. You cannot do that with an energy sword.

If it's two normal people using it, the light saber, and it's not even a question. Energy swords are engineered for elites.

If they are engineered for Elites, then how come humans can use them? Besides, if it's two normal people, the guy with the lightsaber would probably cut off his own arm.

It's a dangerous business, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to.

I think this question can be answered by looking at our own history. The lightsaber is a futuristic model of our historic swords. The covenant sword on the other hand has no (to the extent of my knowledge) comparable weapons from our history. Why? Because it is simply not very practical.

Assuming both weapons have the same cutting power (although I'd guess the lightsaber has more because Jedi commonly cut through feet of steel) because they both use plasma, the only thing to compare is the blade style.

Think of the defensive stance with both weapons. With a lightsaber you can hold the blade out in front of you perpendicularly while only exposing your hand. The covenant sword on the other hand forces you to expose your forearm because you are forced into a "punching" style grip.

There are weapons that use this style of grip but it would be of no use with weapons of this type. The punch style grip is used to give extra force behind a piercing attack to puncture armor. When you are dealing with weapons that instantly cut through armor, a piercing style attack is basically useless.

On the other hand slashing style cuts would be much more effective. Both blades could use slashes but the design of the lightsaber is designed specifically for slashing. With a lightsaber style grip it would be much easier to flow from one attack to the other and still be able to put up a good defense.

Although both are fictional weapons, I think we can use real life history and blade fighting styles to compare them. (everything assuming the same type of combatant at the same skill level)

Energy Sword = 5.2 lbs
Lightsaber = insignificant

I know it doesn't seem like much but 5.2 lbs is actually a lot for a sword. To give you a real life comparison the weight of the energy sword is similar to that of the Scottish Claymore. Your arm would get tired extremely quickly in a fight and your blade would be significantly less nimble.

is an energy sword like a lightsaber where you can cut your finger off just by tapping the blade?

i always THOUGHT of the energy sword as a hot translucent metal, but not hot enough to cut off an appendage without some force.
