Subject: Pick it, the WORST Halo

I'm voting Reach here. Seriously, the campaign was way too cheesy and it wasn't very canon. The worst part of the game here. The Multiplayer balance, however, is too balanced to the point of annoyance. The music is god aweful. It's not Halo, is like a techno remix game. The hype was WAY too high and the gameplay just didn't deliver. I can sum it up like this, slower movement speed, longer kills times, stronger grenades.

"I may not be perfect, but always been true."

Reach's speed is the same when it comes to Spartans. Campaign is canon, specially since newer Canon > older Canon, added to the fact that (as countless people have said before me)you can make the storyline fit with The Fall Of Reach and then you don't have canon issues to complain about.

I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita.

'Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds...'
I suppose we all thought that one way or another."

Won't pick a worst. But Halo 2 was the best.

cars, girls & cake all day everyday

Campaign Quality

CE, 2, and 3 get the points for that.
Not reach, though. It's campaign was dull and unemotional, etc.

Multiplayer Balance

I'm not really big on the whole competitive aspects of Halo, so my reasons are this are sort of moot; All games get points for it except for Halo 2. Halo 2 MP was fun, but only in the sense that it was so horribly glitched that superbouncing and other glitches like that (also BR glitches, sort of) were kind of fun.

Music

All games get points for that. (Halo 2 gets double points) Marty and the orchestra always kills it when it comes to the musical score. Although Reach did try to go for a certain feel that I wasn't digging as much as the other Halo's original, heavenly theme.

Impression it Left

I used to dream that I was fighting in Halo 2. That game will most likely always be my favorite. I loved the feel it had, the music, the tone and attitudes people showed during the story, pretty much everything. (except MP. MP was half-assed)

Hype Compared to Actuality

Halo 3 definitely didn't live up to it's hype. But then again, neither did any of the games after CE. But because of how big of a step-up Halo 2 was from CE, I guess people were expecting Halo 3 to be this...this godly, legendary, "holy crap you're gonna play it for decades because it's the last one" "gonna go down in the textbooks" sort of game. And to me, it comes up to like, 65% of a game like that. Which is sort of good, I guess.

-

I'd have to give it to Reach. :\
It's a great game in my opinion, but it didn't step up from it's predecessor as much as Halo 3 did from Halo 2, and definitely not as much as Halo 2 did from CE.

What a waste....

Reach sucked.

Campaign quality: 3

Almost all the levels involved activating a switch after clearing an area. The other objectives were also repetitive. The characters had no development at all. I can't remember anything about Kat other than her -blam!-iness. You only actually have Emile there for one mission, and all of the deaths sucked. Jorge was the best character, and they killed him first! The team were all very stereotypical.

Jorge: The big softy
Kat: -blam!-y tech
Carter: By the book leader
Emile: Black guy
Jun: The sniper
Six: The quiet one

Multiplayer balance: 6

Depends on what playlist. TBH, BTB sucks. Squad Slayer is the only play list that should have AL.

Music: 0

*vomit*

Impression: Eh...

Hype: Waaaaaay too hyped.

Gameplay: outlined in MP balance. Nades suck.

"Find where the liar hides, so that I may place my boot between his gums!" - Rtas 'Vadum

Reach

I am not really sure what the purpose of Reach was. It did not add any great depth to the Haloverse. I always thought that Reach would be a "dead end plot". I thought that it was then intended to show the Human cost of the war. There had to be some sort of reason to justify its rather contrived plot, and Reach was the site of Humanity's biggest defeat, and we knew that before we even heard of the game. It did not do that very well either. Only one level in whole campaign gave me that impression, and that was Exodus. The rest of it was spent running around rather deserted farms and industrial complexes/military installations.

If it had captured the Human cost more effectively then it would have been worth it in my opinion. ODST did not provide any great revelations about Halo's overarching plot but the atmosphere was great. It was worth it.

The characters were not all that memorable, with the exception of Jorge. Going off of the game alone, nothing intrinsically appealing is revealed about them. They seemed fairly archetypical. Emile's badass was contrived. There was Sorvad's daughter, what happened to her? We were not shown any significant change in Carter when Kat was killed. It does not take all that much to show these things. In one sentence we can discern that Rtas for instance is not blinded by hubris about his species might in defending its homeworld, something that is expected of Sangheili.

Which is another thing. I rather despised the image that they made the Sangheili into in this game. Running around fields killing civilians at night, executing unarmed scientists and gang piling a wounded Spartan. They have been giving us details of how Sangheili were rather respectful of Humanities plight for the past 10 years. Where was the respect that was offered to Kurt in GoO when 6 was at his end? Editing the ranks was a bit annoying as well as confusing, but that is not really a big deal.

It sort of ruined the Covenant's image of being largely imitative. The attack on Reach was rather sneaky and intuitive, making efficient use of Covenant technology. The novel depicted the Covenant throwing ships at the defences until it broke. That is how the Covenant operated which allowed the UNSC to win on occasion. Arguments of "The Covenant eventually learned" or "This was experimental tech" are spectacularly Ad Hoc.

Music was okay I guess. Gameplay I am not really fussed about, matchmaking notwithstanding. The only thing that bugs me is the AI's cheesy aiming accuracy and bottomless clip.

The Data Pads, Exodus and Jorge were really its only redeeming qualities.

  • 05.12.2011 8:27 PM PDT

What a waste....

anton, the 'respect' wasn't really respect. It was meant to be sarcastic (considering how the Sangheili sort of bombed the crap out of everyone).

  • 05.12.2011 8:32 PM PDT

There is one moment in Reach where I felt Carter was affected by Kat's death, it was the opening cinematic to the Package, when he speaks with Holland his voice just sounds completely dead, like he's basically shut down.

Sarcastic?

So they would risk apostasy (and its associated punishments) for wit? "Bombing the crap out of everyone" does not mean that they cannot respect the fight that their enemies put up.

Conversations from the Universe gave the biggest impression, alongside Zhar and Reff. It was also this respect for courage that got the Grunts a social promotion within the Covenant after the last Grunt rebellion.

I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

Reach for me. It's the campaign. I know it's canon (I fixed the plot holes and it all makes sense), it's just that the story wasn't "epic" like the others. It could have been. Multiplayer though is way better than H3.

Reach's campaign just seemed like a half-assed effort by Bungie to fulfill their contractual obligations with Microsoft.

They essentially took a decade spent building a fictional universe, then said -blam!- it, and I'll never understand why.

Worst halo game in the ENTIRE halo universe, lore, etc is Reach. End of story. I can explain if anybody wishes me to.

I wanted the big battles on Reach, the Orbital Defenses (the game was released the same day the Orbital Defenses came online for shiztardmcluvin's sake!) taking out Covenant ship after ship. High casualty counts on both sides, random violence off to the side but still interactable. I mean really.......

Nevertheless I'll keep playing Reach.

  • 05.13.2011 12:51 AM PDT

I Don't know why everyone hates on Reach so much, some people may argue it has a weaker soundtrack and campaign, but they aren't bad by any standards, the was no way near as much Hype for Reach as there was for 3, and anyone that played the beta knew what they were getting into.

the game play is smoother and more responsive than ever, and regardless about your opinions on Armour abilities and bloom, the weapons are far more balanced than in previous titles.

I think its not really fair to compare all these games side by side as each was released at a different time and standards for games has increased overtime due to competition.

However in the spirit of this thread I will name the game that in my opinion is the weakest in each area.

Campaign Quality
-ODST, nothing really groundbreaking for me (still fun though)

Multipayer balance
-Halo 2, I think this is self explanatory

Music
-Reach, I know reach wasn't trying for the whole space opera thing, but I still miss it.

Hype compared to actuality
- Can't really decide, as all have surpassed my expectations ( Halo wars? lol)

Gameplay
-ODST, again not that it was bad, but it wasn't very different from Halo 3

Impression it left
-Again, ODST, I found there wasn't really a felling of contribution to the cause that you see in other Halo games, I'm not really buying the whole Virgil be very helpful thing.

So I suppose ODST would be my worst, but I don't think thats a very accurate summation, as I still love the game and its a helluva lot better than lots of the other stuff out there.

CE. Bad graffix, no Xbox Live cuz Bungie r dun no how to use internet adn I can't even armer lock in split skreen. Fake and g ay.

Nah, on a serious note, I think Reach was great, but not AS good as the previous Halos.

  • 05.13.2011 4:33 AM PDT

52,000 kills in Halo 2 and more legendary playthroughs in CE than you can imagine. I am truly a God.

Not sure I understand the hate for Reach, it was a wonderful game, the campaign especially.

Every Halo was awesome. Halo three was too short. Halo Reach's story wasn't as epic. Halo 1 was pure awesome. Halo 2 was a bit too linear in gameplay, had graphics that were past its time, wasn't as original as the other games, etc. So I choice Halo 2.

I don't think you can really compare it with the others because it is an entirely different genre.

None, they all have their strong points that make them unique.

Bungie did just about everything wrong with Reach, it's the Phantom Menace of the Halo series.

1) Awful, undeveloped and sterile characters which nobody had any reason to care about. They shouldn't have even existed, the game would have done better to focus on Red/Blue Team.

2) Horrid and linear level design. Missions played out like this:
- Fight some bad guys.
- Press a switch to advance to the next area.
- Fight some more bad guys.
- Get in a vehicle and drive somewhere.
- Fight more enemies.
- Press a switch to end the mission.

It was so underwhelming, the locations were very disappointing too. Reach is the main military hub of the UNSC, yet the only military base we see is SWORD Base. The rest is just farmland and New Alexandria, there's no variety at all. Compare this fecal matter to Halo 2:

- Opens up with High Charity, we see the Covenant as characters rather than just aliens we need to kill. We see them as evil, but we soon see that they're very fragile as the story develops.

- A space station, John and the survivors of Installation 04 are awarded. The Covenant arrive at Earth.

- Combination of close quarters and zero-gee fighting as we rid the station of the Covenant and give them back their bomb.

- Skirmishes on Earth in various locations from courtyards, housing districts and wide open plazas.

- Back to Installation 04 where we land on Threshold and fight Heretics. The player sees how fragile the Covenant religion is because you never once kill a human as Thel, only Heretics of the Covenant and the Flood. As John, you are seen to be united with the rest of humanity for a single cause.

- Installation 05, back to the old Halo CE feel as we traverse over dozens of different terrains. The Library, the forests, creeks, temples, flying gondolas, underwater shafts and desolate wastelands. Delta Halo and Sacred Icon have more variety than the whole of Reach's abysmal campaign.

- All story points converge on the Gravemind's lair in the Library. Miranda and Johnson get taken by the Covenant, Thel has to stop the Rings from firing and John is sent to assassinate Truth. We have the golden rule of 3 story points of view at play and it's woven together beautifully.

- High Charity has us sprinting through holy chambers, prison blocks, massive gravity elevators, beautiful gardens and a stunning vista of the Keyship in the background. Reach was just clouds of dust. Yes, it was pretty dust but it wasn't anything as captivating as Halo 2's vistas, the Step of Silence was absolutely amazing.

- Back to Installation 05, the Jiralhanae have betrayed the Sangheili and we see them being slaughtered. Thel rallys the survivors and leads them on a mission to storm the Control Room where eventually he forms an alliance with Johnson and the surviving humans.

- The Flood arrive at High Charity and begin infecting everything. Brutes, Elites, Grunts, Drones, Jackals, Hunters and Flood are waging all-out war; John leaves Cortana behind as Truth leaves for Earth.

- The survivors on Installation 05 guide a Scarab to the Control Room and engage with Tartarus and dozens of Brutes, Halo is put on stand-by mode and we discover that they can all be fired at the Ark which sets up the story for Halo 3 in a very Empire Strikes Back way.

The story is flawlessly built up and structured to the final conclusion where John vows to finish the fight. ESB and Halo 2 share a lot in common, the ending pissed a lot of people off at the start but over time people accept it to be a great thing.

Reach was a convoluted mess of reaching Point A to B in a very dull way. There was nothing at all captivating about the environments, the characters and the story. I never once felt like I cared about Noble Team or anyone in the game. There was a chance to make a really interesting campaign, perhaps introduce new people to the novels if they based the game around the events of TFOR and FS. But no, it was a mandated project which resulted in Bungie's ultimate FU to the fans and Microsoft by implementing an abysmal campaign, poor multiplayer, awful maps, half-arsed Forge and custom games.

It's for this reason that I say that ODST was the last good Halo game. ODST was nothing short of perfection in terms of everything it did, in my opinion ODST should have been the 3 year project where we could have seen much more development of the story leading up to The Storm in Halo 3.

I can sum this whole thing up with just 2 images...
