I started up the heated debate on whether the SPARTAN-II in the cryo tube near the end of Reach is really Linda.
I created the Moa XING avatar pic.
Also I earned the All Star nameplate with this submission to Week 14 All Stars http://www.bungie.net/images/News/Inline11/bwu_0415/art/likea boss.jpg

When I hear "space opera," the first things that come to mind are Star Wars and Mass Effect. Though, I've been thinking, could Halo be considered a space opera?

What a waste....

Yeah, I'd say so.

Don't worry, you're still your mom's favorite Bnet member.

That's exactly what it is. Consider it a modern Epic of Homer.

Define "Space Opera"

I've heard the term many times but I don't know what it really is.

And the two are mutually exclusive? Star Wars has a large military factor in it and it is beyond doubt a Space Opera.

Just because there's a military it doesn't mean something is a Military Sci-Fi, the first way you ca recognize Military Sci-Fi is the Military being the most important in the story and the chain of command and all its branches resemble RL Military (usually US Military). Second thing is that Military Sci-Fi tends to be more realistic and morally grey (at least Human Military), SW is Science-Fantasy and pretty black and white...
Part of description of Military Sci-Fi from wikipedia:
"Traditional military values of bravery, sacrifice, sense of duty, and camaraderie are stressed, and the action is usually described from the point of view of a soldier or officer. Typically, the technology employed is more advanced than present-day and described in detail. In some stories, however, technology is fairly static, and weapons that would be familiar to present-day soldiers are employed, but other aspects of society have changed. For example, women may be accepted as equal partners in combat roles. Wars are not primarily won by research and development, or even logistics, but by willpower, bravery, tactical foresight, and other military virtues. In many stories technological advances are central to plot development."

Also another way to see the difference between both is to look at the designs of human warships, if they are blocky, ugly and have no fancy colors then the chance is higher it's Military Sci-Fi, if they are more round, have fancy colors and just look good then the chance is higher it's Space Opera. This is of course not always true.

It can be considered a lot of things, including military sci-fi, hard sci-fi, science fiction epic and thusly, a space opera.

Halo encompasses basically all genres.
