Hanger one I just shredded with the SMGs until ammo was out and I just threw 'nades like a boss while BRing.

My experience playing Cairo Station on Legendary

As many of us know, A.Is in the Halo universe go rampant after 5 years or so. However, Cortana is an exception to this rule. Bungie Universe forum goers, I have one simple question to ask you?

In Halo Wars, and the end of Halo 3, there are two A.Is left drifting through space for what can be assumed years; Serina and Cortana. Would these A.Is not deteriorate and go Rampant? What would the outcomes of this be for the ship's inhabitants?

First off a correction, the UNSC terminates AIs after 7 years for fear of rampancy, not 5.

Cortana has (according to one theory) already gone through rampancy (during her time with the Gravemind) and has now reached meta-stability.

Serena may go rampant, but I read somewhere that an AI can avoid rampancy for a long period of time if it's focused on a single objective. If Serena is just focused on keeping the SOF alive then she may be able to survive much longer than 7 years.

This, though AIs can live much longer than 7 years, they just rampant about that time and the UNSC usually deletes them because rampancy is a possible danger. I don't think the crew of the SoF would erase Serena though, unless they absolutely had to, because they need her to help keep the ship operational. th

Most A.I. can remain stable for 5-7 years, some even longer.

Human 'Smart' A.I. go rampant after 7 years (not five)on average. They don't necessarily have to go rampant at all, it is just highly likely. Cortana has supposedly overcome rampancy twice; once when in the Control Room in the first game and then when she was with the Gravemind in Halo 3 (as indicated by her green colour). It seems Cortana, as a more advanced and more human A.I. can easily overcome rampancy whereas (most) other A.I. don't seem to ever overcome rampancy. Serena as an older (and less updated) human A.I. probably wouldn't overcome rampancy, but I never liked her anyway. As a rampant A.I. she would probably discard the humans; maybe kill them or just ignore them, but I doubt they would ever come out of their cryo-sleep.

Cortana stoped her-self going through rampancy, or she went through it but the became stable. Like the fist poster in this thread said.
Serina, No idea. It's possible that she will go rampant while in space, killing the crew or she, like Cortana, Surives rampancy or goes through it but keeps the crew alive.

THANK YOU! in all my years of bungie nobody else has correctly stated such!

Cortana, as stated, has reached meta stability.

I figure Serena, much like in the AI in The Cole Protocol, will focus her attention solely on the SoF to avoid rampancy- they are her charges, and thus her responsibility. Or something.

Yeah, that's my line of thinking, I think AIs taking care of something in the middle of nowhere and the crew or people there are relying on them will do better with rampancy than like say Sif did in Contact Harvest.

I wake up to find myself
After all these years
And where all the time has gone
Still seems so unclear

I don't know where you guys got that Cortana is Meta-stable. I don't ever remember her going through the stages. She was never mad at her creators, nor was she ever envious of humans. At most you can say she staved off going rampant once the Chief rescued her. She never started feeling emotions.

The time she's bound to spend on In Amber Clad will probably make her rampant. I could just see the Chief waking up in an alien hospital on the legendary world hearing Cortana over the loud speakers saying, "I AM A MONUMENT TO ALL YOUR SINS." And having to go turn her off. Worse wake up call, ever.

Serina and SoF will probably never be mentioned again... So, I don't really care what happens to them.

Read the short story "Human Weakness" in Halo Evolutions, Cortana was most definitely going through the stages of Rampancy.

The number of 7 years that you're thinking of is only an average. That means it could be much longer or it could be much shorter.

I've read it several times, actually. She never felt any emotions except for when the Gravemind was forcing her too. He was poking and prodding her to make her think she was going rampant. He likes to play mind games. What's the worst thing to happen to an AI? Loss of control.

For years he poked and prodded Mendicant into rampancy, he didn't play on Mendicant's fears, he played on his ability to choose a different master. My point is the Gravemind has the ability to affect AIs' neural matrices. He can manipulate organics on a DNA level, why not a program based on organic matter?

Correct, an AI can avoid rampancy if they stay unaware of their "big picture".

He can not only manipulate the DNA code, he can arrange it to do a specific purpose.

My name is Legion, for we are many.

AIs go rampant due to a loss of stability or bad programming, like modern-day game glitches. It could be avoidable.

Actually, it's a memory issue. As they get older, smart AI's start using more and more of their memory thinking about well.... everything. It drives them nuts.

So technically, if you had infinite memory, rampancy would be avoided.

That being said, an AI can come back and achieve "metastability", essentially becoming "true" person.
