With the Covenant disbanded, and Gravemind defeated, will there be any adversary to fight? The bread and butter of Halo has always been fighting grunts, jackals, hunters, and elites/brutes. If indeed a Halo 4 is made, I feel like there won't be anyone to fight, and the game would be more of an exploration/discovery game. What are your thoughts? Maybe the Forerunners will return as enemies?

Well although MC did take out the remaining flood in the galaxy, its never truly revealed where the floods origins are, so maybe they could return as an enemy. I dont know really, 343 would possibly have to come up with an entirely new enemy to fight.

Forerunners as enemies would be a bit awkward situation. It's hard to come up with anything to fight against but maybe Covenant still has a minor force which we will be fighting against. I have no idea what 343i is going to do.

Another possibility I have been thinking about is time travel, although it seems very cliche.

Waaay too cliche. I wouldn't want Halo universe to be messed up with time travel.

Actually that sounds quite plausible. The ship he was on went through a slipspace portal, but the portal could have possibly malfunctioned and thats maybe what caused the MC half of the ship to separate and to be randomnly tansported to a different time era. Slipspace was always a bit unpredictable.

Also that planet was said to look like a forerunner one. Maybe he was transported 100,000 years back in time...

Yes, that was something along the lines of what I was thinking...

I think that it will feature flashbacks to many of Chief's moments in battle, likely from the books, not other Halo games. Think of it as the Rookie's campaign, where half the time he explores a sleeping city, with numerous "flashbacks" (though as other characters) where the majority of fighting is. I think it could work, and it's the only solution that doesn't include time travel or the Covenant magically re-appearing. Fighting only Flood wouldn't please the community nor Bungie I think, and Chief even fighting one Forerunner trooper is a joke, as his armor is like ten times weaker.

edit: Unless the game will be about The Arbiter and his Brute struggle.

Walk by faith. Dude. Not by sight.

But there is no indication of a Spartan type person in the distant past in Halo canon to indicate that is what Master Chief did.

These ideas are more plausible.

My future is certain, I will one day fly away. All because I am saved from the penalty of sin. I know he lives.

They could always flip the role and let you play as the elites, fighting agains the stronger force (the humans), Maybe they found out something that shows that the ring does need to be activated, or that something along that lines.

Either way, for there to ba a halo 4, it will need to be something really special for it to get my attention and want to buy it.

He doesnt have to majorly impact anything, like change the course of the forerunner/flood war. He could for example be captured by prehistoric humans and fight for humanity or something like that. It would definitely be interesting to see him in a different environment anyway. Also cryptum is the first in the series, there are still two more books on the way. So dont rule out anything just yet.

Time travel is a cop out. If that's the best 343i can come up with then I fear for the Halo franchise. But I doubt it. Bungie didn't like the idea of time travel and 343i has Frankie who is probably of the same mindframe.

I wouldn't count the flood out just yet, I would be surprised if they didn't make a return.

Also what about the San 'Shyuum?(not as enemies)

They supposedly went into hiding after the great schism, surely there are a few covenant habitats out of the loop and still dedicated to the great journey, it would make sense for the San 'Shyuum to try and rally any loyalists that are left. If they have not divided amongst themselves.

  • 05.16.2011 8:56 AM PDT

question everything...truth has no pedigree

Even though the war with the Covenant is over, I think there is still room for minor skirmishes with the remnant forces. Something tells me the Brutes aren't just going to go away. They could be even more dangerous without the Prophets to guide their action. Really the Covenant could simply split into several sects, each with a lot of technology and the will to use it unwisely.

I think there will be Forerunners, but as allies. I think the Chief has been sent to their last remaining colony, which has been isolated out of fear of the Flood. Once the Forerunner learn that the Halo array, their ultimate defense, has failed to keep the galaxy "safe" they will form a plan to find and destroy the Flood at their homeworld. Master Chief, of course, will be an important part of the plan. This kind of story arc could easily occupy the next 3 Halo games.

As for your question, I'm not pessimistic. I think there will still be interaction with the races that formerly comprised the Covenant, but I also think the Covies will be shown to be just a small part of the Halo universe. It's my opinion that this is a good thing.

There is one indication, however I'm sure this will have another explanation assigned to it by the time the Forerunner trilogy is complete. In Halo CE 343 Guilty Spark talks to Master Chief as though they've met before, the first time the Halo rings were fired. 343GS when planing on firing off the halo ring says something like "last time you asked me if it was my decision, would I do it. Having had considerable time to ....." etc. Anyway, the way Guilty Spark speaks to Chief in Halo CE really makes it seem like 343GS has met MC before in the distant past when the rings were first fired, but MC himself has clearly not met 343GS yet. Time travel would be the most likely explanation of this dialogue, but as I said, I don't think that's how it will be explained. I'm sure the Forerunner trilogy will give an explanation to it involving a malfunction or 343GS just being crazy or something.

I think a Halo 4 could be really, really good. Perhaps the planet MC is floating toward in the Legendary ending of H3 is a Shield World, with Forerunners on it?

To make things interesting, how about the remaining Covenant finds a rogue Forerunner who gives them access to Forerunner technology. They believe the good Forerunners are impostors, trying to fool them into believing they are their gods. They attack the Forerunner planet, and then a war starts. MC helps the Forerunners fight off the Covenant. At the end of the game, a huge fleet of Flood ships is seen heading towards the galaxy.

That would open up the possibility of a second trilogy.

343 probably wouldn't do this, of course, but IMO it seems like a cool idea. I might write a fanfiction about it...

Medicant Bias deliberately altered the Chief's route to find his masters (Forerunners). Plus Bungie has stated they hate time travel for the some reason as the other guy: too cliche.

  • 05.16.2011 1:51 PM PDT

I'm not sure what you're looking for.

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing" -- Proverbs 12:18

I just feel that Bungie killed off a large chunk of the storyline. The Covenant is dead. They were in all the Halo games, without them we'll be fighting brutes, and their just big alien apes.

Frankie said they want to make ilovebees canon, and that revolves around time travel, so I'm not so sure they would rule it out.
