You're assuming that A: the slipspace drive is in the rear of the ship, B: that all the required systems are still operational, and C: that missing the front half of the ship wouldn't affect the drive.
The real killer though is distance. When the portal collapsed with the dawn's rear section still inside it was deposited somewhere between Earth and out past the edge of the Galaxy. Human space was only about 100 lightyears across and it still took months to cross.
